Delta Plane Narrowly Avoids Mid-Air Collision With Jet
Police dash camera captures a near tragedy in the sky. A Delta plane taking off from Syracuse, New York, came dangerously close to an American Eagle jet that took off first. They came between 700 and 1,000 feet from each other. In a statement, the Federal Aviation Administration says, "An air traffic controller instructed [the American Eagle flight] to go around at Syracuse Hancock International Airport to keep it safely separated from an aircraft that was departing on the same runway."

A reminder to the general public that planes have something called 'TCAS' or Traffic Collision and Avoidance System, it notifies both planes when they get too close to each other, and directs one to climb and the other to descend to avoid collision. @BGRUBBIN yeah, but it's understandable in this situation, no?
Just from some quick geolocating, based off the camera angle, this happened about a mile west of the departure end of RWY28 at KSYR. Considering airliners typically fly instrument flight rules, the Delta flight was likely on the Syracuse Two Departure, which would have the pilot climb out on runway heading to 4000 feet before being vectored onto his requested course. Since the smaller American Eagle jet looked to be level, I doubt a collision would have occurred, as neither pilot had to evasively maneuver to avoid each other. The American Eagle jet likely has a higher climb gradient, hence why he was level while the Delta plane was still in the climb. I see two scenarios of fault: 1. ATC erroneously gave takeoff clearance to the Delta flight without ensuring proper separation or ensuring the American Eagle flight was given vectors to move away from runway heading. 2. The Delta pilot mistakenly believed he was given takeoff clearance (was actually told to line up and wait), was task saturated, and took off without checking in with ATC to be sure of his actions. Scenario 1 is more likely, as the American Eagle jet likely climbed to altitude, slowed to its filed airspeed, and was awaiting departure vectors when the Delta flight caught up to them. Still, this is a huge break down in crew resource management. The copilot could quite easily hop on comms and confirm their clearance, verify separation via ADS-B, or attempt to gain a visual on the American Eagle flight since the airport looks to be visual flight rules. Even though ATC is supposed to ensure separation of aircraft on IFR flight plans, it doesn’t relinquish the pilot of the responsibility to see and avoid, especially when the ability to do so is very much possible.

Reposting my top-level comment to clear some things up in this comment. I checked flight tracking history and ATC audio. The video got several details wrong. This incident happened on July 8 at 11:52am at Syracuse Hancock Intl (SYR), Syracuse, NY. American Eagle, Bombardier CRJ-900LR, tail N555NN, Bluestreak flight JIA5511: Took off from Reagan National (DCA), Washington, DC at 10:59am and on approach. The video said it took off at 11:40am. They said it took off "first", which is technically true, but about 40 minutes earlier from an airport 300 miles away. Delta, Bombardier CRJ-900LR, tail N927XJ, Endeavor flight EDV5421: Departed gate at 11:35am and took off at 11:52am for LaGuardia (LGA), New York, NY. The video said it took off at 11:43am en route to Washington, DC. ATC cleared American Eagle to land runway 28, then cleared Delta for takeoff runway 28 while American Eagle was on final. American Eagle noticed ATC's error and asked about it, after which ATC told them to go around. American Eagle then had an RA (Resolution Advisory from their Traffic Collision Avoidance System). The ADS-B tracks indicate American Eagle was about 700 feet above Delta at their closest. Delta continued climbing and American Eagle was flying level and started climbing in response to the RA.

@sbreheny

I looked it up. The near collision happened AFTER a plane was told to go around. So there were two mistakes here - first, a controller cleared a plane to take off and then cleared another plane to land on the same runway. What was supposed to happen was that the plane would take off before the other one landed. That did happen, but it was too close and the controller told the landing plane to go around. However, this made the situation worse because now the plane that just took off was on the same course as the one told to go around. The controller should have told the one going-around to make an immediate turn to stay clear of the plane that just took off.
We almost merely going into Breaking Bad universe.

This is one of those jobs where if you’re a lazy or sloppy worker there shouldn’t be a second chance since making sure to the best of your ability the plane is safe to fly should always be a 100% effort. There's an alternate Universe where this footage becomes one of the most viewed air crash videos of all time showing first the first time a real mid-air collision between two airliners. Which is weird and scary to think about but I'm happy no one got hurt this time.
1000 feet is the legal requirement I believe for separation. I wonder if it's more of the camera angle and they were farther apart than they looked
In an alternate universe this will be front page news for the next few weeks and will be labeled the deadliest crash since xyz.
Ahh that is scary
What doesn’t make sense is why is that American Eagle plane so low in altitude 3 minutes after take off? The Delta plane is still in its initial climb. Which is far too low for an Aircraft that took off 3 minutes ago. The American Eagle plans should be thousands of feet in the air by now. We wouldn’t be able to see it. Other news media outlets says ATC usually gives a vertical separation of 700 to 1000 feet for aircraft but they didn’t have the horizontal distance between aircraft. Air space is 3 dimensional. Inside Edition assumed that was the only distance they were apart. The American Eagle plane in the video looks to be descending altitude. This contradicts the information that the American Eagle plane is taking off. I believe the American Eagle Plane was descending to land. I think the media got the ATC audio wrong. The voice must have been the American Eagle pilot who is questioning why the Delta plane got clearance to take off. They likely got clearance to land 3 minutes ago, and not taken off 3 minutes ago. ATC screwed up. Then media outlets like Inside Edition try to sensationalize it with limited information. 😒
I liked Delta flights. They reminded me of my college friend. I was never able to catch any Delta flight on time. Not because I was late but because my friend (Delta) was always always late. With Delta at least they kept their apology ready. My friend thought I deserved to wait.

Flying once and we were seconds from touching down, had been well descending for a while and all of a sudden we hear the engines roar and we start pulling back up - we missed another plane (you can see it on the fly map) and circled the airport for 30 months before landing again.

I don't think any airplane has enough fuel to circle that long.
The visual perception of a "near miss" is deceiving because both aircraft departed from parallel runways, hence the lateral separation of about 700 - 1000 feet. Standard procedure requirements dictate that both aircraft fly the runway heading until reaching between 3000 and 7000 feet AGL before commencing any turns.
Stop complaining… diversity is working as planned.

If they collided, that would've been pilot error. As for the United flight, that's maintenance fault by United, not Boeing's.

This is a real life version of a clip from a movie where a plane is landing while another one is taking off and they were within a couple feet of each other.
Airports that has boeing and untied needs more check up and a visited. This is unsafe. The airport in north syracuse needs an investigation whoever control air traffic needs some seriosu talk!

The 130000 kid prayer almost got accepted
When you see some of the people that they have there in the factories and out there on the tarmac maintaining these planes, you can’t help but to feel great concern. It’s definitely worrisome.
The distance of this near miss is equivalent to 1/8th of an international airport runway length.
Who says they came 700 feet from each other, also, is that vertically or laterally? So much more information is needed.
Wow inside edition you got almost all your facts mixed up with this one. Great reporting.
That reminds me of when during the dallas airshow a b-17 and another fighter collided, good thing they missed each other
Is this what happens when we don’t all put our phones on air plane mode?
They didn’t even flinch you can tell they didn’t even get a proximity warning it’s just the perspective 1000ft separation is usual
Somewhere in Albuquerque, some chemistry teacher is mad this did not happen to a similar mid air collision.
1000ft separation is normal and procedure during cruise but anything less (especially during takeoff) is CRAZY
From the description, it looks like the American Eagle had been on trying to land, but was instructed to go around because of the departing Delta flight using the same runway. Apparently the effort to keep the planes apart from each other was a bit in vain and unsuccessful.
i'm wondering why you described one of them as a jet and one of them as a plane?
Imagine being in the smaller jet and seeing a big plane literally like 20 meters away
Funny thing happened when I was 8 year old on a trip from San Diego to California, a small fire happened in the toilet in which we had an emergency landing like this one, I thought the flight attendant was saying praise praise praise
So much for pre trip inspections before take off !
