    They do that prior to the gate only. Once at the gate, they simply scan the boarding pass, that was only issued with confirmed identity, whether online or at the check in. Then again confirmed with ID at security. Can you imagine how much longer it would take to check IDs against boarding passes at the gate, for the 3rd time? Better that the computer at the gate would flag any duplicate boarding passes.

  • @x_Punisher_x

    @x_Punisher_x

    WRONG. Airline agents are NOT responsible for verifying ID. ID is only required in order to go through the security checkpoint, by a TSA agent only. Once through security, you don't need to pull your ID out again, as your boarding pass is sufficient (and this guy obviously knew that already).

    From what I see from this video 2 big mistakes were made unfortunately upfront by Employees to let him get onto a plane. 1) Why did they let him thru TSA w/o a boarding pass. Boarding pass demographic info should match your license/state issued I.d. That's why they check both before you even go thru security check. 2) Why didn't flight attendants check that the toilets were empty before the plane started for taxing on departure?

    That's the million dollar question, but the answer is probably quite mundane. I've never seen airport staff that wasn't severely stressed during boarding. The bigger question is: Why did the system not alert them to the fact? Humans can easily lose track, but the computer should not.

    @@maximilian672 I'll use this analogy. My kindergarten daughter was getting on the bus. The bus driver looked in the rear view mirror and didn't check the door. She closed the door in my daughters face an started driving. She was making a right turn. Thank God I was right there and pulled her away and banged on the door. She jammed on the brakes and opened the door. I called the school and ended up taking to the director of transportation. He said " The driver is only human and mistakes happen" I replied "She has ONE JOB! to gaurentee our children get to school safely. She failed and there's no excuse for it" the reason for all the counting and checking boarding passes is for the saftey and security of the passengers. No matter how "Stressed they are. There's no excuse for failing to do their job. I'm retired and took a job at a theme park. Our first priority is safety. We're also expected to interact with guests ... Literally thousands of people, parades and activities. I've been chatting and schmoozing with guests and they notice that my eyes were everywhere and some have commented "you don't miss anything do you?" No I don't! And the worst thing that can happen is someone getting a boo boo.

    @@gdaddy5193 in a perfect world, you would be right. However, we do not live in one and mistakes / system failures are inevitable. No matter how diligent or dedicated you are, no matter how complicated or simple your tasks are, you will eventually make a mistake, given that you do something long enough. This doesn't mean what happened to your daughter is excusable. There should have been additional safety layers in place to prevent this from happening. Just as there should have been fallbacks in place to catch that illegal passenger before the plane left the gate. Critical systems (computers and humans) require fallbacks and optimally a failsafe state and should be designed accordingly.

The reason they're alive is because nobody ever made a mistake. From maintenance to ATC to themselves. Quite a few of the commercial pilots took early retirement because they've seen the quality of people start to slip. From pilots to maintenance to the aircraft manufacturers. Baggage handlers have caused planes to crash because of an oversight or mistake. There is NO MARGIN FOR ERROR. period.
