Dell XPS 13 9370 2018 Review - A DOWNGRADE From 2017?

The Dell XPS 13 has been revised for 2018 with the 9370 version but is it REALLY better than the 9360 2017 model? This new notebook may be faster but prepare for a life of dongles. Also, the one redeeming feature of the XPS 13 the matte display has been eliminated. But does a faster processor and other upgrades make up for those losses?

I love seeing both your reviews (both you and Dmitri), as you both do a great job talking about the most important details about the things you're reviewing, though I would love to see in cases like this at least a mention of it's user-servicability or upgradablity. Even if it's sealed shut, just to let me know, as this can be an important feature in keeping this laptop running for the 3-5 year range a lot of people do.

completely agree, I would have loved to see one 4-lane tb port and 1 fullsize sd-uhs2 port as the upgrade. I actually use the touch more than I thought I would on my xps13, it's great for using maps like airbnb, or craigslist. It also feels good when panning a photo in photoshop or using the laptop in a tight space like an airplane.

Someone has to be first. Laptop manufacturers or device manufacturers and I really don't see a problem with the device that has only USB-C. It's like the people in amazon comments, complaining about a device that they bought which doesn't have functions that they wanted. You don't have to buy this new Dell laptop, but you can if you don't need USB-A. Thank you Dell.

Moreover, if there will be devices with legacy ports like USB-A we will not move forward. I think we should just pull a plug on USB-A.

Maybe it's just because I'm a student and I'm not required to use a whole bunch of ports, but I think the 9370 is a massive improvement upon the 9360. The included type c charger instead of the barrel plug makes using my laptop for at least 7 hours a day possible because I can charge it very quickly whenever I want, and the thinness and lightness makes it crazy portable

USB-C charging was present in the previous model, and the physical properties barely changed. I also do not get why it is the included USB-C charger that gets praise, if you wanna bring it around you can do that to the traditional charger, and you can charge with other USB-C chargers with the previous model.

What you look for in a new laptop is usually better performance - and 10% can sound like a lot, but at the end of the day it's the things like the lack of USB A or the excellent keyboard/trackpad that makes or breaks your experience. I got a 9370 (i7/16/512) and it's great: completely silent and I love typing on it. As for the lack of USB A ports I got myself a mini USB C to A converter and put it on my keyring, I shouldn't have to, but it is what it is.

I purchased the 9370 about three weeks ago, i7, 16G ram and 512 hd, standard resolution (not 4K). A friend has the 9360 and I believe the 9370 is a better choice. I have a type-c port on my phone, tablet so I can use just type-c charging including an Anker battery pack. The speed of the unit is great for my work, coding, and Adobe Illustrater. I purchased a refurb from the dell site and save a few hundred as well. Thanks for the review.

All USB-C? I Can accept that. Bring the future forward. No full size SD? That is ass backwards thinking. Just because Microsoft did it doesn't mean it's a good idea. SD cards are still very important to many content creators, and tech enthusiasts who are buying this machine. And they will be for a long time.

Alexandre Loens right, but SD is the only format that could potentially work over USB-C. Eventually, power, display, keyboard, mice, thumb drives, transfer cables, webcams, E-GPU, all of it could be USB-C. The only dongle that will always be in our lives is the SD Card reader. Which is infuriating.

Slayer1111111111able not true. I've always used micro sd cards and just use the full sized sd adapters for my camera. That way any of my cards can go in my phone or laptop or camera without having two different card sizes to worry about. Plus both micro and normal sd are close enough in price and speed there is no good reason to get full sized sd cards.

Good review! I’m a motorcycle travel writer and prefer laptops with a built-in SD card reader because dongles get lost. That’s why I bought an XPS13 9350 instead of a Razerblade Stealth or other models back in 2016. My cameras can transfer via USB A but the 9370 got rid of them too. I’m going have to pass on this model and look elsewhere, unfortunately.

I'm confused about the benchmark temps, because you are saying the CPU only hit 2.6 GHz. Your model is the i5, right? On the i7 I see the CPU consistently hit 99C for a couple minutes before the fan even kicks in -- but it is running 3.7ghz on all cores. What cooling profile were you running? If it throttles to 2.6 then it sounds like you were using the "cool" profile.

Mykola Dekhtiarenko The thing is we have had Bluetooth headphones for over a decade and they work now the same way they always did but now have all this marketing telling us the industry needs to move on when there is no logical reason to do so besides limiting options. USBC is different because it is a better interface but not widely adopted for accessories, so realistically it’s a handicapped experience for a future that isn’t here yet. The solution here is to just include a normal USBA port at in the mean time. After all the flack Apple has had for their poor decisions for “production” devices it’s just a shame to see less options on the market that don’t just follow trends.

No Dell didn't blindly follow Apple. USB-C is indeed the vastly superior port, and it does push for unification. This is 9360 still exists and the only difference is pretty much the ports, with same updated specs. This is the best approach a company can have for this. The part they failed to even follow Apple is when they put a grand total of 3 ports on it.

Easy they need to sell new hardware. We are getting to the point where there is no major evolution in terms of hardware performance every year (speaking about keyboards, mouse, headphones etc) so they need to change the way we connect to the main device in order to sell those juicy new products. On the other side, the tech will now continue to improve because of newer technology removes some limits that older technologies have. But as a consumer i'm really happy with some periferals that i brougth years ago and don't feel the urge to buy new pieces of hardware.

Push the change? That itself is an asshole attitude... USB-A introduced in 1996, We still had PS2 ports on laptops in 2005... So that transition took 9 years, and that considering the incredible advancements in technology; in 1996 we all had three button (no scroll wheel) ball mice.. In 2005, we had wireless optical mice with what? 6 configurable buttons?.. For 9 years both ports were option but as people bought newer and far better mice with USB ports, PS2 became gradually useless.. They disappeared from laptops AFTER they got useless, not before, no one forced it on customers.. USB-C introduced in 2014, and from 2014 to today nothing really changed to warrant an upgrade my peripherals; I consider my 8 year old Performance MX mouse still quite competetive to any brand new glass-surface mouse you can name of. I consider my 4 year old 5700 dpi Tt eSports mouse still better than many brand-new gaming mice out there... WHY, in hell, would I need to buy a new mouse? I want to use my existing equipment on my new laptop, plain and simple... That is not pushing the change, because there is no change in mice technology to speak of.. That is just another stupid move in thinner=better ideal..

referring to the older model, my boyfriend and i had the 15 inch version on the Dell Xps 9560 and with BOTH of our laptops they ended up overheating and while his cpu failed, mine would eventually shut off hitting thermals at 78-ish c , I would later switch to a 15' razer. Having the white and gold version for 5 months I can tell you that there is some false clicking if you rest your palms to either side of the mouse pad. or Your mouse can be re positioned or a select or select all text event may occur. If you type the backspace key thinking your going back one character you end up deleting the entire block of text. Solution don't rest your palms on either side of the mouse pad. Also, there seems to be an issue with blue-tooth connectivity and recognizing new/unknown devices. My Sony MDR-ZX220BT is not recognised at all. My iPad and all my android devices recognise and connect / identify them just fine. Can't tell if its a hardware issue or an issue with Windows. It a hot room with no A/C I am getting issues with throttling. Solved by having a desk fan trained on unit to increase cooling during 30 degree Celsius weather. Need to wipe rear vents on a daily basis since ultra fine dust is collecting around them and desk area near them. I have a hepa filter in the room that gets ride of coarse to small particles. Located in downtown core heavy traffic area so lots of pollution during peak hours.

I have to say, while it is SUPER inconvenient to not have USB type A ports on these new pieces of hardware that are coming to market, if companies don’t make a move to switch to all type C ports then you will never see the full integration of type C into all products. Tech companies are using their market power to influence other companies into creating more type C products. Eventually all of wired and wireless peripherals will operate through type C, but that will never happen without us as consumers having to give up our much loved and used standard USB ports.

My Switch, phone, 2016 XPS and my work laptop are all USB-C. When i travel home I just need 1 cable to transfer and 1 brick to charge.

USB-C is the future. That's all there is to it. It's easier to use and has significant advantages in speed and usability over the older ports. The question you should ask instead of why there aren't USB-A Ports on newer notebooks would be why not every plugin device has the option to plug in a USB C cable instead. Not sure if you're old enough to remember the dozens of cables you had to use to plugin devices prior to USB-A. Just think of what would've happened if people cried that they couldn't use their LPT1 and PS2 devices without a dongle anymore and we'd still be stuck in cable-hell. Personally i'm pretty happy to see USB-C being widely adopted.

That is a nonsense analogy from all aspects. 1- USB was introduced in 1996, many laptops of 2005 still had PS2 ports.... Especially when from 1996 to 2005 peripheral technology also changed drastically.. No one would use a three-button ball mouse in year 2005 even if they could still stick it onto their laptop... So the ps2 port became useless *first* and than it disappeared. On contrast, USB-C introduced in 2014, I would consider a perfectly functional 4 year old mouse still brand new... Hell, my 9 year old performance mx is spec-wise equal to any good mouse... USB-A is still in wide-spread use, its nowhere as obsolete as ps2 was in 2005.. 2- Putting a "PS2 to USB adapter" leaving it on the end of wired mouse there permanently was not a big deal. But USB-A allows micro wireless adapters, or tiny USB sticks, both with circutary inside the port, sticking only 1-2mm outside of the laptop.. Those I can and do leave on laptop permanently... On USB-C, I would have to remove and reattach them everytime I pack up my laptop? Why downgrade with exactly zero benefits? 3- USB-A is exactly as fast as USB-C, with better durability and better impact resistance.. Advantage of smaller size, and two-sidedness isn't really an advantage on laptops. It is an optional, good to have port ONLY if it supports thunderbolt and is an addition to usual ports. Definately not a replacement.

I had three XPS 9370's (and believe it or not, three 9360's). They all had problems. Can you please just tell me how Dell gets away with so much praise over this product? People should instead bash their QC. You reviewers should stop accepting review samples and actually go buy one from a batch. Faulty drivers, audio popping and crackling, faulty displays, fans that go full speed for no reason (have to make tweaks in the registry to fix), poor workmanship (laptop sits lopsided on a flat surface), even down to the Intel branding sticker not being straight. I'm sorry, but if you're spending upwards to two thousand US dollars for the top tier model, NONE of these imperfections should exist. I urge you, HardwareCanucks to not only gripe about dongles and the lack of a matte display, but the actual common problems with the XPS model. Believe me, there are a ton of them.

9370 is simply an all around upgrade over 9360. Everything gets a slight but noticeable improvement. I've had problems with 9360 with i7-7560U flickering and overheating (not fixed after multiple RMAs), 9370 doesn't seem to exhibit any of those old issues. That alone makes the 9370 the superior choice. You brought up eGPU when mentioning the USB C ports. For people looking at potential gaming performance, get the 15 inch model. Those come with 8750H processors and run much faster than 8550U. You're comparing beefy 6 cores against 4 core power sipping processors and there's a very significant difference in performance. I kinda wish Dell had included 8750H for the 13'' model but I can understand their reasoning - most people buy the smaller version for portability and work. I totally agree with you in regards to 1080 version. I have the 4K version, while everything looks incredibly sharp, some Windows scaling issues can make things look funky. If you're working with a budget you might as well save the additional 400 dollars. That being said, it does look really nice and I would have a hard time downgrading if I had to buy another XPS. :)

I'm quite happy with my 9370 now that they fixed the keyboard issue (missing keypresses). I knew it didn't have USB Type-A ports, but I could live with that. My mouse supports Bluetooth, I like the idea I can charge off any of the USB Type-C ports (so can choose between plugging in on either side). The only real "downgrade" for me was the change to a micro SD card slot, but for now it's not a deal breaker as I don't have an SLR or anything that takes full size cards. Overall though, battery life meets my needs, the display is excellent (I have the 4k panel), and I think this machine will last me a long time.

  • @karim1485

My addition, since I have the 9370 too... I have a 4k because the color reproduction is phenomental and perfect for photo production.. also, the touch is always useful and I definitely use it unlike my sister on her MBP13. The screen is bright enough to work outside and I haven't had any issues with scaling - and watching 4k content is simply unparalleled to anything you have seen before. I don't have a fingerprint sensor, but windows Hello is super fast and still effective with the weird cam placement. I don't use them so I dont care. I never missed the fingerprint sensor and I don't recommend it since. Now to the bads: -The 4k display indeed cuts battery life to 6 hour ish, I seldomly use the battery anyways and only ran out once. -The coil while is noticeable in very quiet rooms or at night... and yes, you have some. I had three mainboards and they all had them. So yeah, no worries, It won't make you not love it but it can be annoying indeed. Btw, having tested 3 mainboards, i now have the luck to have an 8550u that manages to hold over 2,5Ghz on all cores instead of 1,8 on the other two.. -It is somewhat a downgrade to not use Intel wireless (no fanboy at all) because the killer ac is known to be a little unreliable, which was the reason for swapping my mainboard out the second time. Please change that back on the next model. Also I personally don't mind the ports. All my SD cards are micro SD (200gb or so in total) anyways (GoPro, camera with adaptors) and the soon to come monitor supports USB-c to hook External disks to. Everything else is pretty much perfect, so things not listed are awesome!!!

While it would have been nice for a USB-A port, it's not a deal breaker for me. I dont need to use a dongle for my external drive, I can just replace the cable for one with the right connectors at both ends. Not a big deal is it? for USB flash drives, yes you'll need a dongle, but hopefully some times soon usb-c Flash drives will become the norm and you can leave a USB-A-> USB-C adapter connected to your TV for when you want to connect one up. I already have a USB-C -> HDMI adapter for my 9530 as well, so moving to the 9370 will not be an issue.

  • @intranix

Your argument for 4K vs 1080p is kinda flawed. Scaling @ 200% would essentially mean a 1080p desktop with 4x the image clarity for apps that support it, and those that don't (very few these days) you could use app scaling and it would look exactly the same as it would on a 1080p display. There are literally no issues with 200% scaling. Battery life would have been a better argument. However as a developer, 4 times the pixels makes a huuuuge amount of difference and 1080p is not an option for me. The same could be said for anyone who works with images or video. This is why I will stick with the XPS range for some time to come. I wait patiently for a 4K LG Gram though, fingers crossed.

The IO configuration is really not ideal. I agree that USB-C is superior in every way except the lack of compatibility with a majority of external devices. No mouse, no keyboard, no audio, which makes a dock necessary. However that is not my concern, dongles were never my problem, because I use way too much ports I need my adapter with 4 USB-A and RJ-45 gigabit NIC anyway. The problem really is the number of ports available. On a X1 Carbon, I can use my adapter on the thunderbolt port, use the HDMI for display, charge it with another thunderbolt port and still have USB-A ports spared for a usb hdd and a clear right side of the laptop for my mouse pad and my G502. Both of the XPS cannot handle this. I don't care which port you put on because plugging in one single adapter for everything I don't bring with me is a convinience, else I have to plug 5 wires in assuming it has 4 USB-A and a NIC, but at least it has to have 6 of them.

USB-C PD enabled usb/thunderbolt dock/adapter is capable of replicating HDMI, USB A and network ports while pass-thru charging the device. You can do literally everything you described with a single thunderbolt port on the XPS if you have a half-decent dock/adapter.

$16 will get you a USB-C to HDMI cable. Lots of laptops use Mini-HDMI or Mini-DisplayPort but the great thing about USB-C is multi-function. One moment you can connect to a television via HDMI and the next you can connect an ultra-fast external hard drive or a hub that can charge the laptop, connect a monitor, and add a couple of legacy USB-A ports.
