As an LG UltraFine owner, I really appreciate using the USB type-c connector for my MacBook Pro. Charges just fine as expected, but being able to plug in a USB Logitech webcam on the display, and have that automatically be connected to my MacBook is pretty slick. When I'm mobile I use the built in camera, but when attached to the display, again with USB type C, you instantly get these other peripherals connected (and powered). Pretty nice feature for a single cable to my MacBook Pro.

Is yours still alive? Mine's backlight suddenly died after 1.8 years after buying it 💀 HDR10 signal also made it look very magenta, essentially making HDR unusable on the monitor. In SDR colours looked normal

I am still a bit confused to choose a monitor for my MacBook 13 M1(2020): I like the Dell U2720Q but I want to be sure that it will display correctly sharp fonts especially for Word, Excel and Acrobat (when I magnify my documents). Thank you in advance for your response and advice. PS: I have also another MacBook Pro 14 (2021) - eventually thinking to get a second Dell U2720Q (I believe I will have to use DDM).

Thanks for showing them next to each other like that. A lot of the time when you look for comparisons and reviews you end up looking at one at a time, which isn't half as useful as this. Very helpful video!

Thanks Amit! Glad it was helpful for you! Weirdly, the Dell lets me select sRGB under color > preset modes > color space, and then RGB under input color format. It's glitchy tho, cuz sometimes when I click input color format, it defaults to YPbPr, then if I select RGB, the entire screen turns pink. Dell knows about this issue and apparently is working on a fix!

@@b3naqua there was so many options but Jesus for 1,500+ for thunderbolts and higher refresh rates,i don't ever do photography or high end stuff like that so I don't think its worth it to me to buy such things. that screen looks awesome and I'm sure it will make my work station whole. thanks for the great video!

Does your dell monitor wake up from sleep on it's own for couple of seconds while plugged in to M1 Mac mini? Mine does that every few hours.

I have pre-order ASD and having second thoughts Comparing it to the Dell 4K. Can you tell me the Differences in sharpness . Still retina ? are the icons way too small on 4K versus 5K. Are you connecting the LG monitor via USB type C? I just acquired this monitor and when i have it plugged using the USB C port, i don't get all the adjustment settings, such as: Game Adjust, Color Adjust, Color Temp. Any idea how i can solve this? Thanks!

I connect the type c cable provided by 2019 Mbp 16" running catalina 10.15.7 to Dell U2720D. It cannot detect. But using the original 1m cable by Dell it is working. Which brand of type c are you using and I looking for a 2m as 1m is too short for my setup with monitor arm.

Hey Ben, great video! Ive got the Dell and noticed you set yours up with Smart HDR, so I tried the same thing. When I turn it on the whole display dims. Obviously brightness is greyed out when HDR is on, but I’m wondering if you ran into the same issue. Do have any tips? In general, would love any tips for matching the color of the Dell to my MacBook Pro. I’m also moving from an iMac 27” and missing it!

Great review....to the point...the point system works well. I think that I am sold on the Dell. Have read some other reviews on some minor problems with the LG, i.e; yellow tint bleeding through for some reason. Keep up the good work Aqua-man...I know it is Aqua-blue, thought I would give you some super powers!

lol thanks William! I need all the super power help I can get haha. The Dell is really nice. Using it right now. The LG did seem like it had more light bleeding issues on the sides than the Dell, which has pretty minimal light bleed.

i have been using BenQ PD2700U, but earlier i had Dell Dell U2414H, which delivered same image quality and i dont find any improvement with my BenQ PD2700U even though it is 4K monitor. So i just want to return it back and planning to buy Dell UltraSharp U2720Q. Will it make any difference, i mean i need a monitor whhich is better than Benq PD2700U, please suggest.

I have my M1 Mac Mini (base 8/256) hooked up to my Vizio E60 E3 in my bedroom. the TV sits at the foot of my bed on a wide dresser. I also have the LG 27UD58-B (purchased in late 2017) on my desk that sits next to my bed. The LG is still going strong with no degradation in picture quality or performance. I switch the Mac back and forth depending on work or play. Monitor for work and play. The Vizio for Media consumption and play.

What resolution setting are you using for these monitors? I recently got a 27” 4k and the default for UI is 1080p so everything is a bit large, but when I change it to where I like it it says “using a scaled resolution may effect performance” and it definitely does when doing rendering tasks.

Does this LG ergo ultrafine 4k monitor support Truetone and Night Shift setting on Macbook?

The LG only costing 3/4 of what the Dell does is worth a 9/10 advantage. The extra $150 puts them in different classes in my mind.

I thought I was the only one who did the Nintendo Switch + Apple Arcade combo for gaming. Great video!!

From what I’ve heard , 5k 27 or 1440 p 27 are best cuz 1440 is native for mac and 5k is a 2x upscale . I’m planning on getting a 32 or 27 inch 4K soon cuz 24 inch 4K is quite small for a UHD panel with not too many high quality options . I’ve tried pairing my mbp with a 4K 55 inch tv and it’s not too bad

Did anyone buy additional anti blue coating on top of the monitor? I have the dell 2219 monitors 1080P and buying the anti blue covering onto helped my eyes a lot. Is this recommended for this 4k monitor?

Nice video! I am choosing between these monitors and in my use case, I want to use it also as a Chromecast display. Do you know whether there is any automatic input switching (for example when I turn my PC off, it would switch to a different input where Chromecast is plugged in) or if no, which of these monitors is more comfortable to quickly switch inputs on. Also, I have read about various audio issues on the Dell monitor when using the 3.5 mm audio jack and in Dell's manual, they only mention that the audio jack works on USB-C and DisplayPort connections. No mention of HDMI. Could you confirm that the audio jack would work fine with a Chromecast plugged into the HDMI port? Thanks!

Thanks! I haven't tried a Chromecast with these monitors, but I have my Switch plugged into the Dell (via HDMI) and I'm able to get a clean line level (full volume/non-adjustable volume) audio out of the 3.5mm jack into my speakers. The Dell supports automatic input switching too, but it can be kind of buggy so I usually manually change inputs.

Great video 👍. I have the same configuration (DELL U2720Q + Mac Mini M1 16GB RAM) and im satisfied. I have only two points - firts, i would like to have a brightness control direct from keyboard like in Macbook PRO, or iMac (i have control keyn on my MX Keys keyboard - does anyone know of any solution for this?), and second, connection thru USB-C is OK but thru HDMI i frequently get picture dropouts 🙄. Thanks!

Thanks! I don't think monitor brightness control is supported yet by M1. I've tried to do that on my Mac mini M1 and have not had any luck with it. Hopefully an update will fix this, because it works fine on my 2019 MBP with Intel chip.

I haven’t tried that LG 23.7 but it’s supposed to be one of the only monitors that actually rivals the quality of iMac displays.

I use hdmi for the Switch and usb-c for the Mac mini. Both support 60hz!

Unless I zoned out for a moment, you missed out some key info. Did you run them at “retina” 2x, in which case it seems like too few pixels for 27” (iMac is 5k, remember). Or did you run at 1x which would make text pretty small? Or, as seems likely, scaled somewhere in between?

I have the same question. 27 at native resolution will be tiny, at 2:1 scaling will only get you 1080 horizontal lines and in between will be an oddball scale that will tax the graphics and not look crisp.

Very helpful video, thank you. I wanted to ask, this monitor is 8-bit + FRC and not true 10-bit, so does it display gradients as smoothly and accurately? like SW321C

Gradients look p good, but you'll def get better results w a higher res monitor imo

Dunno if it's just my unit. But I got the Dell, and there is some quality control issues with the monitor (at least with mine). If you look carefully you can see adhesives exposed on the bottom frame. And when you initially start up the monitor there is yellowing on the bottom edge of screen, although it goes away after 2-3 hours of use. I will likely return it but just heads up for future buyers

You're welcome! The LG should come with connection cables, so you could connect it to your MBP using the included usb-c cable.

You're welcome! I haven't tried the ASUS, but specs-wise it looks very similar to the LG, if not better, with extra USB ports.

Do you notice any uniformity issues? My LG UN850 half side red and half green, especially on a white webpage or spreadsheet. Is it a common issue with IPS panels? Does Dell have that issue?

We believe the LG 27UL850 would be great on anyone's budget. But would love if it could charge a Mac Book Pro 16", but the 60W charging is just not enough. Great Review

For some odd reason after plugging my monitor up to my new mac mini m1 when using usb-c connectivity with this monitor my connection is reading at 2760p 30 bit usb 2.0. watching other reviews I'm noting that other's are getting a 3.1 or 3.0 signal if that makes sense upon connectivity. I've used the original usb-c that came with this monitor and I've used an apple usb-c both connect at 2760p 30bit usb 2.0 should I be worried?

In the monitor settings, go to Display > usb-c prioritization > try selecting high resolution, then try high data speed and see what kind of results you get with usb data speeds. I think it may be a limitation on the monitor that when high resolution is selected, you get 4K 60hz, but the USB ports go down to 2.0, which is annoying. I usually use the high resolution mode for the faster refresh rates.

Do you recommend LG 27ul850 or Dell U2721DE for macbook pro external monitor? How is your overall experience with LG 27ul850 monitor?

I like the Dell for it’s extra USB ports and more accurate colors. The LG is way cheaper tho and the display quality is excellent!

Thanks! The Dell should work fine for the PS5, tho since it maxes out at 60hz, games requiring a faster refresh rate might be a tiny bit choppy. But it’ll work!

hi ben! a question! i have a macbook air m1 and i use a dell p2419hc monitor.. this monitor has a 65w charger.. with usbc it sends video signal and charges! but the Mac comes with a 30w charger... any problem using it connected all day? my fear is that in the future, the battery will be damaged

Keep it plugged in/powered for long periods of time will degrade the battery longevity over time. But if that setup works for you, you could get the battery replaced later!

You mentioned that you have tried the UL version of LG monitor. Did you have the same issues just like with the UK version? The UN version is not available in Poland.. don’t know why, so I’m considering the UL.

The UL and the UN are basically identical as far as specs and design. I think the only difference is the UN model number, which indicates a 2020 release, vs UL which indicates 2019.

Cool you got the 16gb! I can't adjust brightness in Mac settings :( the app I normally use (MonitorControl) doesn't work with M1 yet as far as I know, so the brightness has to be adjusted on the monitor itself.

That's a great question! I'm looking for a great 24'' 4k monitor for my Mac mini, but most of the reviews I find are about 27'' monitors (and I'd rather stick to a smaller form factor to have a better pixel per inch ratio and because 27'' is too big for my small desk)

Thanks! Those LG monitors are all very similar, except the UN is the 2020 model, UL is 2019, and UK is 2018. The only difference between them that I know of is updated DisplayHDR and DisplayPort functionality in the UL and UN. I'd suggest going with the UN.

Nice! One is connected via usb-c and the other via hdmi. It works well!

I wound up getting the Dell. What’s surprising to me is the lack of decent reviews for the dell soundbars. What did you use for audio? I’m planning on using this monitor primarily for productivity and not gaming, so I don’t need anything super high-end.

Cool you got the Dell! I use a pair of big studio monitors as well as a few different pairs of headphones for music creation. @@b3naqua We are in a strange time with the new Apple micro LED displays. I need a monitor but I'm hesitant b/c I think Apple and others are going to come out w/120Hz 1000 Nit HDR models soon.

How would you compare either of these to your old iMac setup? I'm curious to pull the trigger on a Mac Mini but the Retina displays have much higher pixel density and more accurate colors, and as a photo editor I'm nervous to dip my toes into this world. Great video tho!

Thanks Caleb! They’re really nice but nowhere near the beauty of the retina iMacs. My 2015 5K iMac screen is way better than both of these, just wish it could be used as a an external monitor for the mini 😭 but these monitors still are awesome for the $ and can def be used for photo editing!

Would you know if LG is coming out with a new monitor in 2022

How clear are the texts/image quality/icons of these 2 monitors based on their ppi? Is dell u2720q better in terms of icon/text quality? I haven't seen any actual 4k monitor other than the 4.5K 24" and 5k 27" iMacs and I loved them so much. Thank you for anyone who respond.

Text and sharpness is pretty good on these, but not nearly as good as iMac screens. Those iMac screens are insane.

@@b3naqua Thanks Ben. I can't get off these Retina screens. If any other monitors can't reach half the quality of these screens, then I'm not buying it and just stick with my iMac 2012 1440p screen.
