dude great video for someone trying to see if they want to throw a gpu in there or not. The PSU is so specific in these you basically have to run a low profile.

I have an Optiplex 9020 SFF with 8GB of RAM. After watching this video I took the plunge and bought the same card; after installing it I can report that it works a treat. I am now playing SC2 on far higher settings (game suggested ones) than the IG, as one would anticipate. The card runs quietly, in fact I can barely hear it even when I have no programs running. Thank you Mr Whitianga :o)

Hey MrWhitieanga. I hope you don't mind if I add my report on this build to your post. I bought a Dell 9020 SFF (i5-4570+8gb RAM+1Tb HDD) and installed the same Gigabyte LP GTX 1050 ti card onto the PCIex4 slot. After playing a lot of Fallout 4 on the GeForce Experience optimized settings (high-ultra/1080p) I can report 52-60 fps consistently. However, the temperature is an issue. I installed CAM monitor and my card was going as high as 81°C, which is ok still, but not recommended for gpu lifespan. So I removed the cover and pulled out the psu, laid it on top of the open case and tried again... -10°C difference after a couple of hours. Another important point is that particularly Fallout4 seems to freeze my gpu temperature sensor if I run it from the desktop launcher. This is a bad thing because the card doesn't report high temp and the fan doesn't spin up, leading to serious overheating. It doesn't seem to happen when I launch from GeForce Experience, I get normal temperature readings and fan control then. Also... hooked up to a wattmeter, power draw for the whole system has never gone above 155W and usually runs at 50-70W when not gaming, so the PSU rated at 255 is perfectly capable of handling it. Just letting ppl know in case they want to replicate the build.

Thanks for the feedback, really appreciate it. I’ve built 3 of these for friends and I don’t get any feedback unless something goes wrong but yeah my main concern is the gpu over heating in the low profile case especially as we are coming into summer. And thanks for the tip about launching from geforce experience I will pass that on, cheers

Darcy Maloney Don't be mad at the truth, it's not my fault you so desperately need to justify your purchase. The processors used in current consoles right now is their main weakness, even a 3rd or 4th gen core i5 con outclass them quite easily and the gtx 1050 Ti does yield higher detail and higher fps at full HD in most titles than both the PS4 and Xbox One base models, just get over it.

Update for you all. I worried that the 4x slot would be a bottleneck for this card so I took the board out and tested it I'm the 16x too. Basically no difference. The card/system is not bus-limited. So by my reckon Ng this is about the fastest card you can get for this system. Extrely pleased with the results. The overall spec is technically not fast enough for VR but my use case is only very basic. I use a PSVR headset for sim racing I'm Assetto Corsa and the like. It works a charm. The card is plenty fast enough to maintain 60fps in VR, which I'm the PSVR is very comfortable indeed. Happy bunny. I have a VR gaming rig for next to nothing.

Just picked up this card and have it hooked up to the PCIx4 slot. I gotta say I am quite impressed on what this card can do. Tested DOOM with everything on high except shadow and motion blur (medium) Was getting between 54 and 61fps on 1080p windowed mode (Using a 1440p monitor at the moment). Tried our Divinity Original Sin 2 with everything on max except lighting shadows (disabled) as that feature was causing the directx to crash. Was getting solid 60fps all across on 1080p windowed. Definitely worth getting if you are upgrading an SFF computer like the 9020SFF. The specs on my spare 9020 SFF besides the graphics card are: Intel i5 4750 @ 3.2 ghz 16 GB RAM 1 TB WD RAID Low Power HDD from 2012 @ 64mb/s cache

I thought 2 fans is better than 1, in case 1 of the fan break down. Suggestions? thx

Just a side note but I recommend you get Windows 10 (Home or Pro doesn't matter that much), it's the fastest version so far and its pretty much free to download and use - Dell as far as I know has a license for Windows integrated on the board so it shouldn't ask for a license.

Hey! As I see on the video you install the LP 1050 ti on the PCI-e x4? And also on the manual of the 9020 SFF, it says x16 PCI-e (as wired x4) for that slot. Do you know the mean of this? And is the 255 watt power supply enough? Last question, Is there any performance drop compared to x16?

Hello and thank you for sharing your build with us! I recently purchased a Dell Optiplex 9020 SFF with a i5-4590 and 16gb ram off of Ebay. I read a lot of conflicting results regarding the GPU selection for this base pc. I went with the Gigabyte GT 1030. I am happy with what I paid for everything (refurb pc, 240G SSD, Gigabyte GT 1030: US$ 250.) Now I am starting to wonder if my assumptions were not accurate. I thought that if the PCIE slots did not support the wattage for the 1050 ti, it would just not work, as in not POST. Error codes in beep-speak. Annoying PC speaker language. Now I am hearing that it will work, just not as effectively? Can someone confirm this? What is done is done, I bought the GT 1030 and I am gaming and actually quite happy compared to my old Franken-PC build. However my devil's advocate is saying I can sell off my GT 1030 for at least 50% of my purchase price if not more due to its low usage (got it off amazon for 84 us dollars) and go with the 1050 TI since it is within my budget. I have been very analytical about the performance in the games I play and the 720p vs 1080p barrier, and I am seeing in quite a few of the games I play, just a moderate amount of performance will get me to that sweet FPS spot that lets me enjoy the quality I prefer at the frame rate I desire. Thanks if anyone cares to chat about this with me! :-D

So i just recently bought a 9020 SFF and am in almost the same situation as you are in. I have done some research and from what I can tell the power supply on the 9020 can produce around 255 W. This is definitely more than capable of running a GT 1030 but I believe it can be quite worthwhile to get a better card. A Gtx 1050ti and 750ti both can be very power hungry. So what I think would be best is to get the mini or smaller less power consuming versions. My best recommendation is to go for the Gtx 1050 ti mini or Gtx 1650 mini. Both don't require external power. I hope this helps but I am still looking myself :)

It's interesting when I post this video showing this card working in this pc but get lots of comments like how can this be possible, that psu is not enough or how can it work in that short x4 PCIe slot that only supports 25w, surely there's not enough room in that case but I've heard from lots of gamers who are successfully using this setup and I've also heard from a couple early on where it didn't work out, pc would blue screen or freeze but I'd say for the vast majority this has been a stable rig. I'm actually surprised this card is still for sale, its getting on now.

Thanks a lot for this video! I just decided to get one of this computers, based solely on your info. I know that would mean a messy setup (video card outside of the case and all), but if the performance difference is significative, then I guess it would be an option. Any ideas regarding this? @@MrWhitianga I see, thanks for answering. I guess, however, that the difference in a higher card like the 1050 Ti would be a bit more noticeable. Just in case, I ordered an el cheapo riser cable to give it a try, and if there is a marked difference, I would consider a more ad hoc riser cable. I'll let you know as soon as I get the video card delivered. I'm also considering moving the PSU out of the box, instead of moving the 1050Ti, but, again, it will depend on the difference (or lack thereof) on FPS, specifically on X-Plane 11.

When I go to the bios, it says that all PCI express slots are empty.(bios is : A19 - latest version). Everything is updated to the latest version too (chipsets, etc). The slot is not dead, I had a sound card before and it was working fine. The card is also not dead. I've tested it on my old pc and it worked. I also opened a thread on the Dell Forum and a guy told me that I should turn CSM ON and Secure Boot OFF but there is no option for that on my bios, even though I am running windows 10 64bit uefi.
