    Hi, how would you compare these to more modern dell rugged laptops? Im torn between three laptops ive found. Rugged Dell Latitude E6420 XFR i7 ($350), Dell Latitude 5420 Rugged i7-8650U ($500), Dell Latitude 5430 i5-1145G7 ($850). I've been bouncing around a theory in my head for a couple days now and so far I cannot seem to find anything that would suggest me that it wouldn't work... E6430 models used the exact same case and motherboard design/layout as their older E6420 brethren...which share theirs with the XFR... so I believe an E6430 (standard or ATG) motherboard can be installed in an E6420 XFR case. I need to find out, for science.

  • @LaptopRetrospective

    Interesting idea. Would the connectors for all the hardware be the same? Would be a nightmare if it didn't recognize the other hardware.

  • @W1ldTangent

    @W1ldTangent

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@LaptopRetrospective that's the thing.. I believe most of the hardware is built into the motherboard or dumb anyway so it won't care. I've looked at dozens of photos of all board revisions of the 5 models in question, schematics and maintenance manuals for most of them too... Still not finding anything glaringly obvious that says it wouldn't physically work. All down to software really, but I can't think of many reasons why that wouldn't work either; the normal/ATG/XFR of each series share the same firmware images.

  • @W1ldTangent

    I think it'll cost me around $350-400 to find out, and so far nobody has managed to dissuade me from trying with a good argument for why I shouldn't... The only thing I wish Dell had done differently would be hiding the labels on the bottom in a protective panel as that would prevent the labels from fading out.

    4 жыл бұрын

    @@LaptopRetrospective It boggles my mind they made such a mistake in a what would otherwise be considered a well engineered laptop. Some of the information present on those labels could actually be crucial, for example when taking the laptop to a service center for a repair (they need the serial number to check the validity of the machine's warranty) or if one has to reinstall a copy of Windows 7 and needs to use the product key to activate Windows. I believe on the non XFR version of the E6420, the COA is located under the battery, thus protecting the label against wear and tear. Which is just ironic to me.

  • @LaptopRetrospective

    I think they were against a rock and a hard place where to put it. Battery compartment door interior would be the only place I can think of but even then, that isn't enough room. Mylar sticker from the factory would probably have been the best idea.

  • @FlyboyHelosim

    @FlyboyHelosim

    3 жыл бұрын

    These things aren't really an issue and the nature of the stickers is that they're pretty much disposable anyway, only really needing to be kept intact until the unit reaches the initial customer. Companies and organizations more than likely keep digital records of this information anyway. The service tag (serial number) on all Dell laptops is also embedded digitally and can be accessed through the BIOS/UEFI, so whatever happens to trivial items such as stickers means you don't lose access to the most important thing... the service tag.
