Thanks for bringing this to my attention. The Dell in this video has an i5-2450M. As far as I know, the N5110 is not compatible with Ivy Bridge CPUs and the i7-2760QM (Sandy Bridge) is the max. This would lead to higher clock speeds and 4 cores as opposed to 2. That could certainly help it pack an extra punch. This laptop was upgraded with temps in mind over performance. I don't intend to upgrade the CPU any further from where it is. An SSD and extra RAM are useful for reducing temps. These CPUs are 32nm. Even with an i5, they are known for running on the hotter side. I've seen temps up to 90C reported when the i7 is in use. The 2760QM costs about $45-50, and since it has a higher TDP, it will more than likely require a higher wattage PSU (130W). These upgrades together would cost an additional $80 in parts, at least if you intend on buying a genuine Dell AC Adapter.

Does your Dell still have a working battery? If you do and you're on Windows, all you need to do is download it from Dell's site and run it. It seems like they took the link to this driver down and then put it back up. A lot of people had problems upgrading to Windows 10 apparently, but it works on the laptop in this video. Here is the link to the driver: www.dell.com/support/home/en-us/drivers/driversdetails?driverid=f4hgt

What CPU do you have and what OS? I've heard that the N5110s with i7s can have especially bad overheating problems. If you've already done everything you could to make the hardware run cooler, you could try to optimize/debloat your OS so it's less taxing on the CPU and frees up more of your hardware's resources for the things you actually want to do with it.

Almost every time I've encountered that, it's either: 1 RAM stick was loose/not seated properly, or the laptop is on an old BIOS version. Some 64-bit laptops from the earlier 2010s were given extended memory support via BIOS updates. A good way to make sure you have working RAM is to test one stick out at a time in the same socket. If they're identical, seated properly, and one works but another doesn't, it might be bad RAM.

@@gpr-garwoodprecisionrepair6256 Thanks for the reply. What I mean is, in the situation outlined in the video where a manufacturer specifies that the machine can only use 8GB of RAM, is it possible that 16GB will work but the machine can only address half of it? Hence, the specification is technically correct, but also people saying 16GB works are technically correct but not in the way they think they are i.e. the machine is not using the full 16GB of memory.

@@MarkJones-mm3br If the BIOS reads it, it should support it in full. It could be a possible scenario. The best way to prove it on the spot would be to test about 12-14GB worth of programs on a laptop with similar specs that 100% supports 16GB from factory, then run the same programs and OS environment on a laptop that only allegedly supports it. If it works the same, then surely it's addressing all the RAM. Precision T3500s are another Dell product that got several BIOS updates for years and eventually got extended memory support (24->48GB DDR3). Certain HP laptops into the early 2010s only supported about 6.3GB max in their original BIOS revisions, but later got extended support to 16GB. With that in mind, factory specs can be misleading if they predate a dozen BIOS updates, and it's hard to tell for sure if a BIOS update is the solution if the fix was 8 revisions back in the changelog or something.

There's a chance that it will recognize 16GB of RAM on an older BIOS. I recommend upgrading to the latest revision because this particular Inspiron had some chipset/display driver compatibility problems that can make Windows 8/10 installs boot to a black screen. If you try to install Win10 w/o updating the BIOS, the generic video driver will work, then Windows Update will try to download the proper driver, and the proper driver creates a perma-black screen that can only be reversed by rolling back the driver (which Win Update will routinely try to reinstall) in Safe Mode. If you run W7 or something like Linux, the BIOS revision might not be so relevant. There are quad-core CPUs available for this Inspiron, but they are quite expensive in terms of price/performance ($45-70 range), they run hot, and they have a higher TDP that requires a bigger 130W power supply. Assuming you want to do this upgrade and have none of the items you need to do it, it'd probably cost about $100 if you include a tube of thermal paste, tools, taxes, shipping, etc.

Hello. The N5110 featured in this video was upgraded with 1333. There were claims and rumors of success reaching 1600 MHz with the i7-2630QM. Intel's official spec sheets say that it isn't possible, and the CPUs officially supported by Dell for the N5110 are capped at 1333. However, some of the higher-performance Sandy Bridge mobile CPUs that came out around the same time (i.e. the 2720QM, 2860QM, and i7 Extreme CPUs) officially support 1600 MHz from Intel. In the comments below, vladimirazirov1815 makes a good point that, while 1600 may not be officially supported for the lower end i7s of that generation (just like 16GB RAM isn't officially supported for the N5110), it may work anyway with the right CPU if the BIOS allows it. If you're really curious and willing to make some major upgrades to a laptop this old, a good start would be to check out the Mobile Platform section of the Sandy Bridge article on Wikipedia. It lists all of the available CPUs for that generation, including their TDP (wattage) and which ones officially support 1600 MHz versus the ones that don't. Those higher-end Sandy Bridge i7s are rather expensive for what they are and are rumored to run very hot in the N5110. If you're upgrading from a lower-spec CPU like an i3/i5 you might need to upgrade your AC Adapter/PSU to one that can more adequately handle the extra power needed. The i7 Extremes require an extra 10W compared to the rest of the i7s and may not be viable. It's all experimental territory and nothing is certain, but it's worth a shot if you're really curious!

@@md_ez 1600 MHz RAM should work fine as long it is the right make for the board (DDR3 204-pin SO-DIMM). Assuming it is of the same type/generation/slot, RAM tends to be backwards compatible. If you put a 1600 MHz RAM stick in a motherboard that supports 1333 max, the RAM will step itself down to 1333 MHz. To a point, you can even mix differently-clocked RAM together (1x1333, 1x1600) and it will run both at the frequency of the lower stick. According to some of the viewers in these comments as well as posters on the Dell support forums, they were actually able to get the N5110 to run 1600 MHz RAM at fullspeed with no issue. The official specs cap it at 1333, but they also claim 8GB as the max. I'm unable to confirm it myself since I bought 1333 sticks and the laptop is no longer with me. Buying 1600 MHz sticks seems like it could lead to a good outcome. There isn't really a price difference between 1333 and 1600 sticks, and the laptop may end up recognizing 1600 in its entirety. Quick cheat sheet: DDR3 vs DDR3L - L denotes Low Voltage. 10600 - 1333 MHz 12800 - 1600 MHz 10600E - E denotes that the RAM has ECC (Error Correction Code). In summary, better stability and integrity, slightly slower performance, more expensive, unnecessary for the N5110. 10600U - U denotes Unbuffered non-ECC. 10600S - S denotes SO-DIMM (laptop RAM), but only some manufacturers use it. This type tends to be Unbuffered and non-ECC as well. Assume U and S to be more similar to each other in behavior, and E to be the most distinct. There are more types of RAM, but these are the most common and I don't want to go too far off on a tangent. The N5110 I worked on in this video came with 10600S (non-ECC). According to comments on the Dell support forums, DDR3L (low-voltage) works fine. The customer I was fixing this for was on a budget and wanted brand new RAM, so I went with memory from a brand called OneByTech. Full ebay listing was titled "US 16GB 2x8GB PC3-10600s DDR3 1333Mhz 204-pin For DELL HP Lenovo Notebook Laptop". RAM from Crucial, Samsung, or Kingston would be ideal. Looking on Ebay now, it seems like there are a few good deals on used sticks.

@@md_ez I suppose it's a bit similar to the CPU and GPU markets. Memory is a difficult thing to make and requires very high-end fabrication plants to manufacture on a big, competitive scale with extremely high quality standards and low failure rates. A lot of the most high-end fabs and the most precise tooling have been concentrated in the US, Europe, Israel, Japan, Korea, and Taiwan. China already makes a lot of its own CPUs, GPUs, and memory on the higher end of the market, but it is still an outlier when it comes to cutting-edge precision components that redefine the industry. It has been focusing a lot of effort and resources on R&D to become more competitive on that stage, however, and there's a chance they could reach it in the next few years. On the lower-end of the Chinese market, there is a fairly big market for cheap counterfeit memory and electrical components. It always helps to research the specific part you're looking to buy to see if anyone else had experience with it in the past for better or worse.
