    I've plugged in my n5110 and the power button and light immediately turns on but the cpu does not seem to be running (no movement of fans and HDD). There is no beeping or flashing lights. Is this likely a motherboard issue?

    Just subscribed and great video. I have a question for you guys. I just replaced the motherboard of a Dell Inspiron 15R N5110 following all the steps, but when I turned on the laptop it gave me 3 short beeps. Can you guys please advise? It would be greatly appreciated.

    3 beeps is usually a motherboard failure, but I've also seen loose keyboard cables and palmrest cables cause 3 beeps. I would suggest going back through the laptop and making sure everything is plugged in and secured. If it still give you the error, then unfortunately the motherboard is probably bad.

    I'm unable to unscrew the motherboard screws. What kinda screwdriver would be appropriate for that? Shall I apply oil near the screw if it still doesn't work?

  • @dellpartspeople

    @dellpartspeople

    7 жыл бұрын

    I used a 1/8th inch Phillips screwdriver. Do not use oil, it is very messy and if it is not completely cleaned off it could cause a short on the motherboard. You might need to use a drill so it can apply a little more torque.

    The graphic is built onto the motherboard and will either be Intel graphics or Nvidia graphics. The laptop can use either of the motherboards but the heatsinks and fans would have to be changed also.

    Hi there! My N5110 suddenly died a few weeks ago.It will not turn on (none of the lights turn on when it's plugged in. It is pretty much dead. Obviously, I am suspecting that the motherboard failed. Wishful thinking here, but would it be possible that another component failed instead? Maybe the power block or something? Great video, by the way. Clear and great pacing.

  • @dellpartspeople

    It's really hard to say when there are no lights and no power. It will most likely be the motherboard or motherboard related. If the power block's led indicator light is turning on then it's usually working fine. If not then it could be the power block isn't powering the laptop and the DC jack isn't charging the battery and the laptop is completely out of power. Other than that, it's most likely going to be the motherboard.

    Parts-People.Com, Inc Hi there! Thank you so much for your comment. It made me look into the possibility of a powerblock failure. This lead me to a forum post where someone's N5110 had the same symptoms but they managed to resolve it rather easily. It turns out the cable connecting the power button to the motherboard(under the keyboard, left hand side) was not connected properly. So I just reconnected it and it works like a charm. Really glad I didn't rush into replacing the motherboard.

    Hi, sometimes this can happen if it doesn't recognize the center pin thus no recognizing the adapter. Power on and press F2 repeatedly to get into the bios and see if your laptop recognizes the adapter. If it doesn't then it won't charge. Could very well be a DC jack but could be a board issue as well.

    I got the screw to go, I used a bigger screw driver and more pressure to get the second one. I took it apart cleaned it out and put everything back together. Then once it was all back together I got power and was able to turn it on, but no display and there was beeping, so I opened it back up and checked the connection with the display and it was a bit loose snapped it in, put it back together and it worked fine. No sure what the original problem was, but we'll see if it keeps running well, I hope so. thanks for all the help though couldn't have done it without the video. hope other people can learn from it.

    Considering this - accidentally used the wrong charger(a BOSE speaker charger) in 5110 laptop... it didn't charge the laptop. Once we found the correct charger it automatically shuts off, tripped GFI circuit; used a second DELL charger and same thing - lights on charger go out immediately upon being plugged into laptop. Never noticed a smell but seems obvious that something in PC is shorted. Tried power cord without battery in and battery makes no difference. Laptop just non-responsive and making chargers shut off immediately. Any advice??

    Unfortunately it sounds like there is a short somewhere on the motherboard. The easiest fix will probably be replacing the motherboard. A laptop repair shop might be able to find and repair the short but there is no guarantee they will find it.

    Cleaning everything and reseating all of the cables and memory might work, but it's hard to tell. 3 beeps just says there is a problem with the motherboard. It could be a bad connection or it could an electrical short somewhere on the board.

    You can buy thermal pads and paste at any electronics store. In most cases the pads can be transferred from one heatsink to the other but compound would have to be replaced. Arctic Silver is a good brand for compound. www.parts-people.com/index.php?action=item&id=11028

    Hi, my N5110 was dropped earlier, and it won't turn on now. There are no beeps, and neither is the fan turning when i press the power button. When the power cable is connected, the power button and two of the LEDs on the board (FPLED1 and the HDLED) blink every 5 seconds. The charging LED (CHLED) does remain constantly turned ON. When only on battery, the LEDs blink every 3 seconds, and this time, the CHLED blinks an amber light instead of white. In both cases, pressing the power button does not make a difference as such, but if I time the press to happen at the same time when the blink happens, then the LEDs turn ON at the same time. I also removed the power button connection, and the two LEDs were still blinking. I have checked the connectors/cables, and found no problem there. My fear is that either the motherboard or the processor might have gone dead. Please help me on finding out the actual issue.

    Have you tried hooking up an external monitor just to see if the screen flashes or give some sign of life? I would try that, the indicators you're looking at are mainly for the charging circuit. If there is an issue, you will probably have to replace the motherboard.

    Parts-People.Com, Inc The external display also sort of does the same. Shows 'Connecting..' for a second and then 'No signal' for few seconds, again 'Connecting..' for a second, and so on. Another thing i noticed is that along with the other LEDs that I mentioned above, the left most button (the 'gears' one) of the 3 quick launch buttons above the keyboard also blinks.

    ngnfF ngnfL I'm sorry, I really don't know what the problem is without having the laptop in front of me to look at. It's probably going to be something like the motherboard or a damaged component on the motherboard but, you should probably take it somewhere to get it diagnosed.

    Parts-People.Com, Inc Didn't get any help from the dell technician who actually did not even try to take a look at the board. "Looks like motherboard should be replaced, and then, if necessary other parts (including the processor) may have to be replaced" It appears I just wasted my money on his 'home visit' charge. I know this might be silly to ask, but do you think even the processor may have been damaged? Looking at it, i did not find any physical damage. My concern is the total cost that i may have to incur on the repair, if it is just the motherboard, it is okay for me, but both processor and motherboard will cost bug bucks. Unfortunately, I did not find any other compatible motherboard to check the processor with.

  • @dellpartspeople

    @dellpartspeople

    ngnfF ngnfL To ease your mind, I would say the processor is probably not damaged. But to be totally honest, it will be really hard to tell with out testing it first. If it is damaged, you probably won't be able to tell by looking at it. If you have the money, buying the parts and testing and fixing it yourself is the most cost effective. But the downside is your initial cost is high because you have to buy all the parts to test with.You will either have to take it to a repair shop and have them diagnose it or you will have to buy the motherboard and CPU (and maybe something else if they don't work), install them and see what fixes it, return the parts that you don't need, and pay the restocking fee.

    Parts-People.Com, Inc Yes, I replaced the motherboard. That now works fine (laptop boots right up with no issues - with the exception of the display being black). I took the battery out, unplugged laptop and held the power button down for a minute - then put the battery back in but still nothing. The video above doesn't say anything about doing anything more (ie to the BIOS or anything) but other things via GOOGLE mention that - I wouldn't think I would have to but I guess I don't know. The other thought is that prior to the motherboard being replaced - google chrome was installed and when it was booted there was a BIOS message stating that it was not compliant (blue screen). That went away, removed Chrome - but then the laptop wouldn't boot at all so I replaced the motherboard. I apologize - this is not my laptop it's my brother in laws so I am just repeating what he is stating prior to the motherboard being replaced. Again, thank you for all of your help!

    +GhostRobot Army Yeah it should work instantly. You may need to update drivers but that should be it. Also, the n5110 has 2 graphics possibilities, dependent on the graphics, you may need to change the heatsink and fan too. The motherboard I linked earlier has nVidia graphics you will need to make sure you have the nVidia heatsink. Unfortunately we are out of stock but the part number is J1VPC.
