Ghazali embarks on a journey to examine the nature of knowledge and understand how true knowledge can be attained. Ghazali recognises the limitations of sensory perception and looks to consider rational axioms. Upon overcoming his sceptical crisis, Ghazali accepts that knowledge based on rational axioms can be relied upon however he cautions that rarely do we exercise pure reason. There is an undercurrent of subconscious influences that prevents us from seeing reality for what it truly is. To free our minds from these prevailing influences we must discipline our bodies (through prayer, fasting, alms-giving) and learn how to interact with people following the Prophetic example. Controlling our inner selves in such a way will lead to spiritual purification and fruitional experiences, which are a taste of the beginning of prophethood and the door to supra-rational knowledge. Knowledge gained through fruitional experiences cannot be imparted or taught through language and this is its limit. However the acquisition of this knowledge provides a higher, clearer view of reality and unveils the realms of the unseen.

    1) The stages of reading the quran begin by one focusing on the words (Mutakallam), then to the meanings of what is said (kalaam), then to Allah (Mutakallim). What then begins to happen is one focuses less on the words and meanings until their focus is only on Allah 2) Control the body --> control the mind --> control the soul 3) A Haal is an emotional state which is the base reason for our motivations. - We do not put our hand in a fire out of knowledge of the damage that occurs, we do not do it because of fear of the pain. The same is with worship - Similarly, the drunkard is more aware of what drinking is like than one who has only read about it in books - As such, people who know this truth must be those who have lived its reality. One must engage in the way to understand it
