In this new ambient guitar tutorial episode, I'm going to demystify delay pedal subdivisions.
While many videos are great at explaning what the subdivision modes are, few are giving you ideas on how to use each type of subdivisions in your music.
So we will explore not only the basics, but a few ideas on how to use Quarter notes, 8th notes, dotted 8ths, triplets and 16th note delay subdivisions.
Let's dive in!
0:00 Intro
0:15 Types of subdivisions
0:34 Quarter notes
2:45 Eight notes
4:00 Dotted eighths

Antoine knows exactly what information other videos are missing to help us all become better musicians. Thank you for filling in those gaps, my friend!

no kidding!!!
This is everything I've always needed to know about delay that nobody bothers explaining. Thank you. Thank you so much!!!!
Thank you for filling in the gaps that we fall through.
A definitive explanation-MÉRCI!
Very straight forward, and now that I just ventured into delay pedal land, I understand the subdivision aspect of it (especially the dotted divisions).... =)
Very good explanations Antoine 👍
1st time hearing this explained and just in time because I got myself a Strymon Dig ....thank you!

Great explanation. Is dotted delay the same as the 2/3 setting I have on a delay pedal of mine?

Never heard of 2/3. That's not a real time signature, so I guess that would mean a polyrhythm of 2 against 3, which would be like using triplets in binary time signatures like 4/4. So the answer is: not that would'nt be like dotted 8th, but would sound close.
Great video, thanks! I have an off topic question. Why do you have both the Timeline and the El Capistan?
@AntoineMichaudGuitar

Because I like to stack 2 delay pedals for some of my sounds, but mainly because the El Capistan is my ''always on'' delay pedal for my clean tone, and the Timeline is my bigger machine for crazy delay effects!
What subdivisions work with different time signatures. Like can dotted 8th be played with 6/8 well or just 8th. Or what works best with 4/4 or 6/8.

Good question. I don't think I've heard dotted eighths in ternary time signature on any known song. That could technically work, but would be flipped and go back on the downbeat every 2 bars. I would use triplets for 6/8 and any other for 4/4.
subdivision is a term used by drummers. Is it really possible to bring rhythmic overlays to ambient styles in such an image ...
