I tried 25 this year. I will probably let them go for next year, in favor of Dominiques (another I tried this year). My favorites are barred rocks, Sussex. N Hampshires. I keep silkies and games for broodiness, I will turn that job over as much as I can, I'm tired of messing with incubators. My best layers are still my Whites. The strain of Delawares I got are poor as layers and meat bird body conformation. They are great eaters though lol.

Thanks for sharing all this! It sounds like you've done quite a bit of experimenting with different breeds. Dominiques, Barred Rocks, Sussex, and New Hampshires are all fantastic choices with their own strengths. Using silkies and game hens for broodiness is also smart move to reduce incubator work. It's a bummer to hear about Delawares not meeting expectations, but it's all part of the learning process in poultry keeping. Your dedication to finding the best fit for your farm is definitely admirable. Keep up the great work!

@@Agronomag My biggest disappointment was the Bielefelders. They seem to be just another oversized breed that is not the wonder chicken it was hyped up to be.

be sad to lose this breed. they are very heavy layers, lay early and often and throughout winter. Roosters are the least human aggressive I have ever delt with so they are great with kids around. got this breed in 2021 and never been happier. Only complaint I have is roosters are quite rough with the ladys.

It's always a bit sad to think about changing or losing such a valuable breed. Hopefully, the issue with the roosters & hens can be managed because it's clear they mean a lot to you. Thanks for sharing this!

Got me one. You can’t save them from extinction if you don’t get one every now and then. So far she is the sweetest to hold. And why would you eat hens. Isn’t that what extra roosters are for

These are beautiful birds and curious. I regret getting them though. They are so loud and annoying. Worse than a rooster. Definitely do not get this breed if you are wanting to keep the noise down. I had two. Got rid of what I thought was the loud one. A few days later the other one took over. It's awful.
