Just a note, rodents will eat through Mylar bags. I lost a lot of food due to mice. Mylar bags will work, but put the bags of food in a bucket to keep the little devils out!

Absolutely! But I've even had rodents chew holes in plastic buckets. Luckily they were after something I had stored as fertilizer, not food. And it might have been rats, not mice. Just a heads-up. If you know there are rodents you probably need metal or glass containers.

@@LeelaLu7 Ain't that the truth! Rodents have chewed holes in our plastic water jugs and even our heavier plastic storage tubs. We've found that glass for smaller quantities of foods and steel trash cans with tight fitting lids for larger quantities work well.

Wow, if you've got mice, that's your problem, not the mylar bags! Can't imagine excepting the fact that you have vermin in your home To determine how you store your food, but using a clothes bin that you can put under your bed is always helpful.

@@KowboyUSA Yes, but they get expensive. Mouse traps are good insurance. I bait the snap ones with cheap peanut butter so I don't have them in the house. They can squeeze through the tiniest holes. And protect your seed supply because that is what they'll go after first!

☺To prevent browning, soak a few minutes in water with a little vinegar, or lemon/lime juice squeezed into it. Then proceed to dehydrate. ☺Then you can use that liquid to make bone broth, lots of starch and some minerals will be in that water. The little bit of vinegar helps get calcium from the bones into the broth. I would do it very slowly over hours, in a crockpot. Add water when needed. Vegetables towards the end.

Some people have told me before that some of their potato slices turned black after dehydrating. A way to stop this is to blanch them in a water and lemon juice solution (10% lemon juice) and then cool them in an identical solution (it also helps to place them back in the solution after slicing/cubing them, while you work).

I have found that my old french fry potato cutter is super for making cut. Run through the cutter and knife cut into any size length you need. Mine has two different sized inserts. I don't make fries with it any more, but being thrifty, held on to it. Finally it dawned on me to use it for dehydrating prep. Works with stubby carrots, root crops and such, too.

Thank you so much for this tutorial! I have a batch of potato slices on my dehydrator right now, and they are turning out great! We have a problem finishing a bag of potatoes before they all sprout, and this was really a lot easier than I thought it would be. No more wasted potatoes here, and scalloped potatoes made easy.

Yep! At 10:10 she shared one of the most important things about dehydrating potatoes! If you don’t mind eating BLACK or GRAY (ick!!) potatoes, then ignore her wisdom here. If you like your potatoes to be white, or creamy colored...take the few minutes more and parboil them.

Be sure to rinse them well after boiling them to get every bit of starch off before putting them on the dehydrator. They can still turn black if starch water isn't rinsed off well.

Thank you so very much for your info. I have all but the pressure cap. That will be my next investment. Cleared with my dad since we have it all and very small freezer so canning and drying will be this year's investment in food preservation. I have celiac so prepared scallop or au gratin are.not safe to use. Looking forward to having prepared foods to get thru the next year. Dad's grandma taught him to can and dry in depression era so have him as consult. At 96 he is not able to do it himself, but he can be my reference for questions. Blessed to still have him.

@@pamwarren24 Boil to evaporate most of the water in the pot. Like cooking down tomatoes for sauce or paste. When you've evaporated as much as you think you can without burning the starch, transfer thickened liquid to fruit roll up trays. I haven't tried it ---> you may be able to make very shallow pans from aluminum foil to fit your trays, especially if you have square trays. Or use cut down disposable type plastic food storage containers to make dehydrating pans to fit.

Dehydrators are great for preserving the small amounts of stuff that aren't worth canning or can't be frozen.. For years I bought celery and cilantro for some dish and ended up throwing the leftovers out after it went bad. Now I dehydrate it - no waste & I don't need to buy more the next time I make the dish. Or if your garden only produces a few tomatoes, peppers, whatever, not enough to can - dehydrate them.
