Poor Adam is smart enough to be really confused, yet also too terrified to call Rowan out on his BS. Alan calls him out, because his confusion is mired in disbelief rather than terror. And Ellie is confused but also 'so over this shit' (except when she's manipulating Rowan to her advantage, like getting insane pay raises). And the fascinating thing about Britt is that she's a MAJOR sycophant, yet somehow completely immune to falling under Rowan's spell! I love her - she's hysterical! :p

It is a form of an abusive relationship. And you do see it in retail. Being a Yes-Person isn't necessarily a good thing in that work environment. Whilst these sketches take it to logical extremes, the reality is that you will be taken advantage of. And if you "step out of line", you will be punished, even if it's a minor "issue". You do have to be aware of your workers' rights and be able to defend them at any moment. It's exhausting. But if you don't do that, you get exploited and exhausted in other ways. I worked in Retail for almost 6 years, and even though I could potentially find work in retail to improve my income today, I'd instead not because of how I was taken advantage of and how much I sacrificed for the previous retail job. Perhaps there are retail businesses that don't abuse their employees, but you only find out when you accept the job offer. And even then, will it trigger me to return to that environment, even if it's neutral?
I actually just love thinking of all the workplace health and safety rules that are being violated in this one scene. For example that toilet seat isn't ergonomically designed for long periods of sitting... So if Alan gets a bad back he could sue, and win, the lawsuit against Techtown.

I can assure you that after having put in many years in the trenches in phone customer service roles, a slave to the queue, if managers could have these amenities set up they absolutely would. Except that you'd need to supply your own food for your feed bag.
Reminds me of when I was at a call centre that only allowed going to the toilet under "comfort breaks". We couldn't even get a coffee/go to the fridge for food unless it was our lunch break. There was a food cart that came around the desks but if you were on the phone you couldn't possibly get up or put the phone on hold etc. So if you were on the phone you missed the food cart. i dunno i gave my last boss a look like I was about to clock him when he pulled this and he backed off
1:37 Yup, the food and water provided by TechTown broke me. That was a past employer’s view on things. ‘You have a break room with stale Oreos always on offer, so we’ve provided meals. Stop going out for food, just stay in and remain closer to your work.’ Corporate America didn’t do it. The pandemic didn’t do it. Grad school hasn’t done it. That one sentence in this skit broke me. Thanks VLDL 😅
The sad thing is there actually ARE bosses who are like this. I worked for a guy once who insisted that if we were not 20 minutes early then we were late. We would be required to work 20 minutes a day for free because that's "the time of day you're getting back into work mode" and then we could clock in once we had done that. And if we were so late that we couldn't work 20 minutes for free before our shift began we would get reprimanded and/or suspended depending on how many offenses we had. It was also retail work, so there was going to be some down time where there were no customers in the store and no more floors to sweep or shelves to stock. If we were at work with nothing to do we were required to clock out until a customer showed up. We couldn't leave the store though. We had to remain "on call". If we got caught talking to each other at work on company time we got a pay cut. We were required to clock out to use the bathroom/ eat/ take a break (which is legally required by law). A bird flew into a window once and killed itself. I went out to pick the bird up and discard it. My boss gave me a pay cut because that was "not part of my duties as an employee". My position required me to spend several hours at a remote warehouse sometimes. He had turned off the water and the power to the warehouse so he wouldn't have to pay for it. So I was required to bring my own flashlight and headlamp to work. And if I needed to use the bathroom while I was there I had to clock out and drive to a gas station to use the bathroom. Then I would get a pay cut for using the company vehicle for a non-work related task. Oh yeah and while the rest of the world who worked for this company were paid around $14 per hour, we were paid $9-$10 per hour which was basically the equivalent of $7-$8 after all the free time was deducted. I wish I was making this up.

You can tell when an actor is good at acting when the character moves your emotions so deep (i hate that manager character). Rowan is soooo good playing that role, well done!!!!!
Ohh Adam, you poor soul
Correction: Alan's water bottle was not full when he came back from "refilling" it. Easy to tell by the way he sets it down on the desk and the high-pitched, empty noise it made. Thank Goodness Rowan, thoughtfully, had provided him with some water upon his return.
I love the fact that there’s a friggin human sized hamster wheel just casually sitting in the background - can we see Techtown’s “recreation” time with a Hamster wheel that somehow powers a generator or mines crypto or some other form of “utilising” employee “recreation” please? I feel Rowan would approve this decision.
Everyone needs a manager like Rowan who is always thinking about his employee's needs! The hands free feedbag killed me!🤣🤣
