Defending the “Defender in Chief”: John Yoo on Trump’s Fight for Presidential Power

Recorded on July 29, 2020
On the occasion of his new book, Defender in Chief: Donald Trump’s Fight for Presidential Power, Hoover visiting fellow and Berkeley Law School professor John Yoo joins the show to make a spirited case against the criticisms of Donald Trump for his supposed disruption of constitutional rules and norms. The conventional wisdom is that Donald Trump is a threat to the rule of law and the US Constitution. Mainstream media outlets have reported fresh examples of alleged executive overreach or authoritarian White House decisions nearly every day of his presidency. In the 2020 primaries, the candidates have rushed to accuse Trump of destroying our democracy and jeopardizing our nation’s very existence. In his book and on this show, John Yoo argues the opposite: that the Founders would have seen Trump as returning to their vision of presidential power, even at his most controversial and outrageous. It’s a fascinating and often humorous discussion that could not be more timely.

It is a shame, and the American people should be ashamed of the disrespect shown to President Trump and his family! And to the office of president! Congress should be so ashamed as to bow their heads in Shame! They owe apologies to the entirety of the American people, for their disrespect to the entire nation! For electing to receive payment for jobs they have not done for the people. For the money they spent underhandedly that they had no right to spend, or to put in their pocket! And for the lies they have told about our president and his family, and his administration. And for the lies they have told to the public!

More than the documents, it is the ordinary American morality and sense of fairness that Trump is instinctively fighting for. He has never been on the inside of our cultural elites, and so he is still connected to middle American self reliance and patriotism. And is willing to fight any fight to protect his work. Self important spiteful and hilarious, I can't wait to vote for America in November. Keep America Great!

Agreed! He's brought back our trading POWER.! The left can't stand that we are now a nation that MAKES products which is VERY BENEFICIAL for the growth of THE USA! He gave the PEOPLE back the POWER we once had! Reagan in my memory was the last President to balance our budget and yes, the cuts hurt some but in the long run it benefited our great Nation! Everything President Trump has signed, all of the Executive orders will Benefit the USA, SO lets say Biden wins, the next 4 years will be awful, HOWEVER, Trump can RUN again if he so chooses! My fear is Biden's pick for VP, I'm thinking he's going to ask Michelle Obama. If that happens it will a very close race, then Biden will be diagnosed with dementia and Michelle O becomes the 1st Black female President in HISTORY! Pray people, Pray!

Wow! John yoo. You got my vote. It’s amazing Constitutional information , you have such thorough knowledge about what you’re talking, such an eye opener, we all need to understand our government how it should or shouldn’t be. No one will protect us if we don’t, it’s our responsibility to learn and actively participate as citizens of this country, we must do our part to make sure the government do it’s part. Human nature is the most unpredictable thing we know of, it continuously change, hardly ever be controllable and can be manipulated into doing just about anything even unimaginable deeds. With praise, bribes, threats etc. can change human behavior according to the manipulator expected. Keep on doing what you are doing, you are doing the people a great service with your professional presentation. Thanks.

Great interview! I would love it if you could increase the audio volume some. Donald Trump IS a VERY good man. Watch some of his impromptu conferences or meetings. He’s a very likable and caring man with a sharp sense of humor. Trump 2020 🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️🇺🇸❤️
