Defending Europe - what do we need Nato to do? | Sitrep podcast

75 years since Nato was created to defend Europe, Sitrep asks what’s needed to do that job properly today.
From organising hundreds of thousands of troops, to digging ditches and ensuring bridges can carry tanks, the challenges are explained by Professor Michael Clarke and Oana Lungescu, a former senior advisor to the Nato Secretary General.
Part of the jigsaw is the new Alliance Reaction Force. Its commander, Lieutenant General Lorenzo D’Addario, tells Sitrep how the ARF plans to pack more punch more quickly.
And former Royal Navy Commander Tom Sharpe chooses his ‘moment that made me’, when an engineering mistake flooded and threatened to sink his ship.
Kate Gerbeau presents, with expert analysis from Professor Michael Clarke.

What Britain needs to do is stop cutting defence. A 75,000 strong army, 20 warship navy, an air force that can’t protect its own airspace without USAF assistance, doesn’t cut it.

41:00 This guy is a bit confused about naval history. The first sea captain to circumnavigate the world was not Sir Francis Drake. It was the guy the Strait of Magellan was named after: Ferdinand Magellan.

Prepare for a NATO in Trump 2.0. Raise the defence budget to 4.0% by 2030. Reform MoD procurement. Plug each other’s gaps. Build a proper ammunition resilience. Learn how to fight the “grey war”. Practice, practice, practice.

A delegation of authority is NOT the same as a "transfer of power". That distinction is VERY important!! In a delegation of authority, the body that delegated the authority STILL has the ultimate authority. In a transfer of power, the ultimate authority now resides with the body to which power was transferred. THIS is a delegation of authority NOT a transfer of power.

In UK we need to restore the War Maintenance Reserve which has been decimated to levels previously unseen. Restore the RAF lift, Maritime Patrol and fighter capability to pre 1997 levels. Restore the Armoured Brigades to pre 2000 levels, particularly tanks. Restore our surface fleet to pre 1997 levels. An increase to 5% wouldn't scratch that.

UK does not need an armoured force. Britain can do naval and airpower and a mechanized infantry core and that's plenty enough. Tanks don't offer anything over lighter vehicles but more cost.

I'd like to see them learn from history and get on with defending themselves. Russia and their friends are biding their time as well. I see it as a game of spades.
