Here’s the thing; reporting is the bare minimum the court is asking you to do. If you’re not doing that, you’re displaying your true feelings and establishing you’re not taking any of this seriously.

Don't be so judgmental. We are all different in our own, unique ways, and people grieve and cope in different ways, as well. In his case, committing crimes and failing to report to the probation officer, as well as lying about his girlfriend's children's ages each time he was before the judge, was his grieving mechanism.

Different women. My guess is that the first with the adult children kicked him out, because he didn't tell her he was on probation and he brought nothing to the table but stress. He quickly found someone in his same boat to shack up with however (probably had her on the side) ; that's why the address was wrong. I swear, these days, you need to do background checks on anyone you're considering even going out on a date with He's learned to be a slick talker, telling his listeners what they want to hear. Still talking about his dead mother and now his sisters. He'd have to produce their death certificates if it were me. He's a liar, and for that alone, Judge Boyd should have sentenced him to the full 2 years.

In my lifetime, I've lost family members, relationships, pets, and goals. NEWSFLASH: Each loss hurt. However, the hurt does NOT entitle me to commit acts of a dubious nature. Regarding this individual's case, this is a very good example of the Texas "three strike" mentality of the justice system. He had his chance at probation TWICE and he still was incapable of getting his life together therefore, off to the prison he goes. Perhaps now, without any 'distractions,' he can get himself sorted in the yearlong vacation he just bought. Being codependent on and/or blaming another for the choices he (or any other individual) makes is a huge red flag for moral weakness. Either step up or step out because standing with the door of life open with an unprincipled mindset is allowing all manner of poison to enter in and all honorable intentions to exit swiftly. "The road to hell is paved with good intentions." Those traveling on that same road are doing so in conveyances swifter than thought. As judge Boyd would say, "Make better choices."

I usually get that parolees that don't follow the rules should often get some jail time in order to teach them to take it seriously. In this particular case, I'm leaning toward thinking the punishment was too harsh based solely on what I saw in these three "visits" to the court. First, the original charge was relatively minor. People shouldn't steal cars obviously. But there is no mention of violence or drugs or habitual anything. Then he failed to report for a couple of months. Again, a very dumb move but not at the level of being arrested while on probation for new charges. Still no mention of drugs, violence or habitual criminality. Then he made the same dumb mistake again, but still with all the same absence of more serious issues. He participated in the self-help classes as ordered and he got into a career training program as well. I thought using family deaths from years in the past was a very weak excuse, to be sure. I think he was just desperate to try to provide an explanation for something that had no real explanation. He failed to follow rules of probation that were more in the way of an administrative nature as opposed to repeated criminal activity. I believe I would have given him one last shot with the assurance that if he stumbled again in even the slightest degree, he would then get the maximum jail time available.

Except that car theft is a felony, so technically it isn't a "minor" charge at all. If he'd just followed through with his reporting (which, in my opinion *was* a "relatively minor" thing to do), he wouldn't have ultimately been remanded. It didn't help that he wasn't honest with the court, and kept using his mother's passing in 2019 as excuses, either. The man is nearly 30; time to step up and take accountability for his actions.
