Deer Hunting Part # 2 || Fallow & Red Deer Rut || 30-06 Rifle || Stalking
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
We are out hunting on foot, stalking in the beautiful mountains of NSW for trophy Fallow Bucks and Red Stags. This video is part #2 from 3 over a week long hunt. I wish I could say that we smashed an absolute monster buck or stag on this day, but we didn't and that's fine. This is hunting and not shooting, but we filmed some amazing animal and mountain scenery, with a decent boar shot at the end of the day.
I've been very fortunate to gain access in an area like this with a good mate who wishes to remain unnamed (huge thanks to him). This trip we have paired up for some EPIC buck hunting action chasing these dynamic animals in the rut.
As I work through footage I will be posting the episodes up. Ultimately I wish to bolt this all together in one long hunting film.
Solo filming this type of content is a huge challenge, if you would like to additionally support me here is the link to my Patreon. You will gain early access to the video's and all are posted free of advertising. Plus this is the path if you wish for more personal engagement and to chat about gear directly.

Experiencing the fallow buck rut is something every hunter should try to do. They are amped up, croaking for dominance, stinky and keen for a fight. It's often extremely fast paced hunting of what is normally an elusive, shy animal.
The deer taken are free-range wild animals on private property. This is an experience I try to do each year as the hunting is amazing, and something unique to cherish. It's much different to the regular bulk pest control shooting I normally do for work. Understand that this is a recreational activity, and the deer are a game resource on this property.
For those interested my rifle is a fully customised Tikka T3X, chambered in 30-06. The stock is carbon fibre made by Southfort Labs in NZ (now discontinued). Blued fluted sporter barrel, and spiral fluted bolt. Scope is a Swarovski Z5 2.4-12x50mm BT, and I'm shooting handloads with 178gr Hornady ELD-X projectiles at 2830fps.

I have a beef with YT lately that with notifications turned 'on' for several, pigeon, pig, predator, invasive specie, etc hunting channels they're not coming in. That said, nobody can hide a channel this good and I agree with others that the camera work (esp) sets a very high bar. btw, 'shoot sows first', so another excellent hunt . 🙂 Thanks for taking us along.

Well, after all your 'energetic tramping up , over and around those hills, I think it's time for me to sit down and have a coffee! Great videography Nathan, especially that doe and and her 'children' staring at you. Thank you for your efforts, they are not wasted on me.

One sound i enjoy hearing here in late September. Is the Red deer stags roaring at the rut. Though in Scotland we have a problem. Interbreeding with Sika stags. Maybe sooner than we think. The only true bred Red deer will be found on the outer isles alone.

I didn't realise that Sika breed with reds, that's not ideal if they are turning into watered down hybrids 😣

Nathan, a question re: .22. I've never used one of these modern air rifles with the little cylinder and adjustable power, but if money was no problem, would you still get a 22LR, or just one of the hi tech air rifles?
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK
Жыл бұрын
Short version, if you like to tinker, get an FX PCP. If you want to just shoot, get a 22LR 😁

Top stuff Nath, question would that tree have made a noise if you weren't there?
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK
Жыл бұрын
The tree just randomly fell over in the wind, probably 100m away from us. It's not uncommon for eucalypt trees to have this happen.
Great stuff. Can I ask why you don't use shooting sticks here? They're standard fare in the UK for all hunting, and they help as a walking stick.. you use them when you night shoot pigs in past videos. Seems some lightweight quad sticks would be really useful to you here.
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK
Жыл бұрын
I run a tripod at night, not shooting sticks. The terrain up where we were hunting in the video would be a huge challenge for sticks to shoot off and carry. It's rather rugged and very thick in places.
Thanks for all your content. This is not a critique, just an opinion, my preference is your other videos that have far less "b roll". I like your videos that have lots of action and talking.
@EDGEoftheOUTBACK

Thanks mate, I really tried to portray the scenery over the thrill this trip. Much of the "hunting" is more walking and less shooting, opposed to my regular pest control content.

North American deer, elk, moose, and antelope seasons fall during rutting. It's part of population management just as doe/antlerless permits are.
