I have a new video posting in two weeks that is 20 different ways to jog in the pool! I'll be excited to know how you integrate this into your deep water running class.

Frequent recurrence of plantar fasciitis, shin splints and joint pains has made exercising almost impossible for me. Someone just recommended this to me and this might just change my life. Thank you so much for this great video.

Water is gentle on the joints yet can provide a highly resistive workout. Just move in a range that feels good and if an exercise hurts don't do it. I recommend no equipment when getting started. Best of luck to you! We're here to help if you have questions along the way.

Where can we find the flotation belt you were wearing? My belt always slides up too high.

I'm wearing an older version created by Speedo. There are a number of different types of belts available for deep water exercise and as it sounds like you are experiencing, no one size fits all. My clients wear a variety of brands so I'll give you some options to research more about: HYDROFIT.com their classic wave belt is probably closest to the one I have on. Speedo jog belt is another option (various online retailers). For runners aquajogger may be preferred. Tip for getting that belt on right ... put on before you walk in and secure is a little tighter than comfort as it will loosen once submerged. Thanks for following!

When doing deep water walking and treading how can we calculate calories burned? A few of us are searching for some sort of a waterproof heart monitor to wear. However, as we search we are finding that they count motion like laps or steps. When doing treading and aqua aerobic activity that would not be an accurate way to calculate calories. Do you have any recommendations for us?When doing deep water walking and treading how can we calculate calories burned? A few of us are searching for some sort of a waterproof heart monitor to wear. Thanks for your question and great observation! Heart rate monitors do not provide accurate information in the pool. Two very important things to consider. Heart rate is affected by how much of the body is submerged (different in shallow/deep). Heart rate is reduced in water by as much as 10-15 beats per minute. This is because the heart is more efficient in the water. The hydrostatic pressure acts as a secondary pump allowing the heart to be more efficient - bonus! The science of calories burned can get to be complex. However, you can work out harder in water and keep your heart rate lower. How many calories burned? Deep water walking (with travel) about 528 cal/hour while running is about 690 cal/hour. If you want to burn more calories be sure to add travel to your routine. My advice would be to ask yourself on a scale of 1-10 how hard are you working. If you want to do a HI-YO workout like the one in this video allow yourself to feel relaxed, about a 4 in recovery. In the HI work phases ramp it up to a 7-8. Self evaluation on this scale has a strong correlation to actual effort. To maximize calories burned: Try adding resistance equipment (like aquamitts by H2OWEAR is what my clients use) and travel. Thanks for following!

    How deep is your pool?

Hi Diane, this pool is 6 ft. deep. For deep water exercise you'll want to have full suspension without hitting the feet on the pool floor which depends on the height of the person.
