Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

Have you ever been typed as a Soft Summer or a Deep Winter, but something didn't feel quite right? In this video I explain the 4th additional categories of the Cool seasons in the 16-season system of color analysis, Deep Summer and Soft Winter (a.k.a. Shaded Summer and Toned Winter). These especially nuanced seasons will answer some of the questions that you couldn't answer using the 12-season system!

Mind blown. I’m definitely closest to dark winter in 12 seasons, being cool and high contrast, but the boldness of the palette is more than I like. The phrase “restrained energy” really resonates, soft winter really fits

This is what I was looking for! Prior to this video, I had resorted to calling myself a "Greige/Ashy-Dark-Winter" or "Brown/Dark-Soft-Summer". Since I am muted and dark; with some contrast, Soft-Winter is most likely my season. I've always questioned being a Dark-Winter since pure black, optic white, and a few other colours in the palette are just too bright on me and negatively emphasise the ashiness of my complexion and hair. Plus, overly cool-toned colours are too bright and high contrast on me. I see a much better harmony with their darker and/or muted version. That is why I had considered Soft-Summer an option, although I physically don't match the descriptions for that season.

THANK YOU! Soft Winter makes a lot sense because I am sure I belong in Winter but I'm kinda muted. It's sooo weird because my skin is pretty pale and my eyes and hair is black. Like... pitch black. Contrast is really there. People were calling me Snow White for that reason. And I supposed to look great in bold and saturated colors but they kinda look harsh on me. Jet black dress is okay but if I prefer something dark gray it looks much better. Makeup as well. After trying K-beauty I met with muted cool tones and god it changed my whole face.

This is the best channel I have found about style aesthetics, because it actually makes sense. Most of them are missing something for me to relate to. The thing they miss about seasonal analysis is that one can have colouring that has depth and softness at the same time. My skin colour appears slightly tan, and my hair and eyes are dark brown, but my eyes have dark grey outer rings, and the undertones of my skin look ashy in the wrong colours. . Autumn earth tones look horrible on me, spring colours look very separate, winter colours used to look good but are now too harsh at my age. Summer pastels are just meh-blah, unless paired with something dark for contrast. Black and white is way too harsh. I already know about the medium intensity or dark cool colours that suit me because I have an artistic eye, but it feels validating to finally have a season to identify with, which must be deep summer!

FINALLY! I was mistyped as a deep autumn and did it for years. It wasn’t until I had to switch makeup for a skin sensitivity that I realized I was basically painting my face yellowish every time I applied foundation 😅 I tested out cool tones and was shocked because they blended in so well. I dove into researching color theory on my own and found that True Summer fit best, but never totally covered the bases for me… I’m a deep Summer!! Yay!! Mystery solved after a full year of searching lol 🎉

When you spoke about having lighter skin, but having a “deep quality” it was crazy! I have always said that I have this skin color that is represented in much deeper foundations, but it’s light. Like the COLOR of my skin is akin to foundation shades in the med- tan family. But the level of depth is light. I have always said this. That rung such a bell to me! Maybe I’m a shaded/ deep summer. I think I'm a Soft Winter. I always knew the pure white, pure black, and royal blue were too much for me. To be fair, when this color system came out in the eighties, there were instructions that some winters would not be able to wear the more stark colors. They suggested off white instead for instance.

I am a soft winter too. Off white instead of optic white, navy instead of royal blue, cool olive or medium-dark pine green instead of emerald and velvety black instead of jet black are my go too. I also wear very light muted beigy-gold as in the summer palette. Not to mention boysenberry, burgundy and all of the berry colours are my faves. Plum + jade green and champagne+burgundy are my new obsession. What do you wear as a soft winter? I'm always curious about new associations.

I never looked into the 16 seasons before only 12 and I've been wrecking my brain for far to long..I just can't put my finger on if I'm cool/warm so that mustn't be dominant, when I isolated my hair & wore white t-shirt a pink undertone was visable so leaning cool with a yellow overtone I'm just so confused because I cant fit myself anywhere haha ...I always gravitate towards cool colours and autumn but some I think are too heavy for my delicate colouring and soft colours are draining. I think I am soft...my hair is ash soft medium brown hazel brown eyes...I do like to wear chocolate brown and I recently purchased a lipstick ring for all seasons which has me more confused the warm seemed to blend nicely where as winter was harsh..I had considered myself to be somewhere in soft autumn, soft summer,or cook winter because that's the lightest colours of the season

Jenn, thank you so much! I didn’t even know that the term “soft winter” exists and couldn’t figure out why if I have more of a medium contrast, I actually look the best in dark clean colors. Now I know)) I actually have a lot of similarities in facial lines with Roona, so thank you for the choice of the model for demonstration). If you don’t mind, I’ll mention two more factors that I think help to distinguish these two seasons: clarity and angularity. Ronnie’s features have more angles and she doesn’t need any contouring to define her face, and the clarity is almost physical. Thank you again and I’m so glad you have your channel )

I pretty much look awful in all colors except royal blue! I had my colors done in the '80s (Color Me Beautiful) and by process of elimination she *finally* decided I had to be a winter, only because I looked dreadful in the warm seasons' colors and almost as bad in the dusty colors of summer. I am probably an olive with extremely pale, translucent skin (always burn, never tan) light red/strawberry blonde hair which has turned platinum with age, and blue eyes. Not at all the typical winter profile. I've noticed that all of the celebrity examples have dark hair and eyes and good coloring no matter their season. Even the "blondes" are out of the bottle with dark roots and brown eyes. It would be very helpful to show people with more challenging coloring.

Very good explanation, thank you for this video. I fall into this “in between summer and winter” category. I think when I was younger I was “soft, deep winter” with brown eyes and hair and neutral skin undertone, not very cool but definitely not peachy warm. As I am older now and have grey streaks in my hair, I feel gearing more towards the soft summer. In the nutshell I feel like I love most colours from soft summer, like soft teals, plums, light burgundy, deep mauve but deeper neutrals from soft winter like medium browns, soft black and navy and light bright beige. Your example of Rooney Mara wearing medium tone heathered brown jacket and not looking her best was a great one. I appreciate your tips on jewellery and details in the clothing as well.

OHMYGOSH. Thank goodness I found this video! I have always been doubtful that I'm a soft summer, because even though I pull off its colors easily, they felt a tad too soft and light for me. Then on occasions that my skin is brighter or paler, I can also pull off some of the deep winter colors "better" than soft summer colors..... long story short: I'm a deep summer!

This is very helpful. I’ve struggled for some time over whether I’m a soft winter or deep summer. I’m pretty sure I’m naturally a deep summer. I’ve colored my hair darker for a very long time, which gives me a higher contrast and can make me look more soft winter, however. They’re so similar! My natural coloring is more Katie Holmes/Kate Middleton/Angelina Jolie, so I’m feeling more confident about the deep summer category.

This has been really helpful! I was so sure I was a winter but could never understand why black and white and many of the jewel colours were too harsh. I was thinking this meant I must be true winter, sharing from the true summer palette. But your explanation makes so much sense to me when I think mathematically! There are three spectrums trying to be balanced here so using a 2d circle is inaccurate. Think of a 3D graphing system where there is a x axis for warm vs cool, y axis for soft vs bright and a final 3rd axis Z for light vs dark. For me and the traditional 12, all winters have high contrast. But in reality I can be lower on the contrast scale, closer to soft than bright. While still fitting the winter season.

Wow, this video made the world of a difference for me, I think I may have finally understood what I am :D I always knew I am somewhere in between these 2 seasons and was always confused which colours look best on me. I was even once professionally typed and the lady decided to not label me in any way, she just described what characteristic I have and which ones are more important for me and which are not (Deep most important, but not the deepest colours, the second - Bright, but on the spectrum I am just a little bit more towards bright, but not a lot; the least important - Cool, because as long as the first 2 characteristics are present in right proportions, the cool-warm factor didn't do much for me). The info you gave about the details like jewellery was what made me realise what I was! I do look better with necklaces and some details in general, rather than having minimalistic style (I just look undone and plain). And also the pictures of styles for Soft Winter made me realise I would not look good in those clothes. So I guess I am a Deep Summer :) Thanks a lot for ending years of confusion.

This is very useful!!! I have been typed as a summer in the 4 seasons, long ago, And then followed a tutorial about DIYing your season based on the temperature, clarity and depth of your own features, but something was puzzling me between Summer and Winter: I do look from afar as a global Summer, not much contrast BUT whenever I wear darker hair or black wigs for cosplay, or when I make more smokey heavy make-up in darker colours, it suddenly brings a lot of contrast and makes my skin more luminous and my eyes become the center of attention, they look less greyish blue and much lighter and striking. But then, if I try Winter saturated colours, they're a bit too bold for me... I look very good in jewel tones, but flowy fabrice, and much better with statement jewelry than dainty one. Some of my best colours have higher level of contrast: raspberry red, peacock teal. Lighter pastel muted colours tend to blend too much and wash me off... My skin looks instantly better and my eyes pop if I wear some lipstick, but too bright red or fuschia looks terrible. And to top it all off, I feel much better in ivory than pure white. Could it be that I am a Deep Summer? It does feel like a path to test out!

I definitely find the talk about skin tone perception vs. foundation colors relatable! Mine seems to be neutral to slightly cool. Add to that that my natural hair color is dark, but looking closely there's this mix of warm and cool (which I think softens my look), so I think deep summer is the closest any seasonal grouping to my natural appearance. If we're going by the Munsell theory, I would most likely be soft, cool, deep but unsure which order for me. There aren't a ton of resources though to find color schemes for these seasons!

I’m probably one of these palettes. Softness is important for me, and I lean cool. Some of the soft summer colors are too blah, and I need slightly more depth than a true summer. My hair is probably a level 4/5 even though it’s going gray. My eyes are a medium gray/olive green with slight amber specks around the pupil. I can wear charcoal gray and a soft black, but not pure white or black (except away from my face).

Even true red or green looks too warm on me. I always thought I was somewhere in between Cool Summer but darker and Dark Winter but greyer. This video was great as it has validated my lean towards soft winter. I know I look good in black but best when it's softened with lace or sheer fabric and my best white is actually light grey or pinky. I found this palette because I ended up taking the three qualities (hue, value, and chroma) and ranking them individually and then being frustrated because none of the twelve seasons matched all of my placements. I could get most of the way there with soft summer or dark winter but I was too light for a dark winter, not muted enough for a soft summer, and around and around it would go. I knew my best colors were all medium blue grays so I just kept googling different palettes and trying to find one with both the lighter and darker blue grays on it! Finally soft winter coming in clutch. Thanks for explaining how they work!!

I wonder if Rooney is just a Soft Summer with Dramatic essence. Rooney has a lot of dramatic essence (with some ingenue mixed in). So she looks great in deeper colors because she needs the drama. That’s why softer colors can make her look more boring. Katie, on the other hand, has a lot of natural essence. Which looks great with softer colors. I noticed you talked about Rooney looking great even without accessories. Which makes sense that her dramatic essence would really suit very clean cut lines. I’m a Dark Winter and I have Ingenue essence. I can tell very deep colors make my skin and eyes pop. I have a lot of contrast. But the brighter colors in the DW palette suit my essence better. What do you think?

I agree, I didn't think she looked that bad in her soft colours. Black is way too harsh for her features. I don't care what anyone says. Black is not a colour that winters can't wear. It's literally their bread and butter of colours. Effortless should be attached to it. Rooney is too soft for it. Summer seems to fit her more.

That's what came to my mind when I watched the video. As soon as you understand a bit about Kibbe's archetypes and Kitchener's essence system, you'll automatically put that to the equation when thinking about which colors might work on someone or even yourself. I think you really have to train the eye to see which colors actually work for someone. Because using colors straight out of any system just can't work for everybody imho. A person's coloring can be as individual as their personality and while going by names and basically giving someone an ID to use for shopping etc. might be more simple it's also less accurate, I think. Thing is: I've always been obsessed with color theory from any perspective (art, hair, color seasons, printing, light etc.) and I know that there's so much to research and learn, that's not for everyone. But I feel like with only knowing about one part of the puzzle, you can't fully understand color. And if you don't, finding one's color season might be done from an incomplete POV. And that's only one part of a way bigger puzzle...

  • @stylemejenn

    @stylemejenn

I think that this is a valid point but I am honestly not very well versed in the Kibbe and Kitchener systems to share my opinion! I'd love to learn more about these systems and how they connect to seasonal colors though - it'd be so interesting to have a complete map integrating both color analysis and the archetypes and their relationship!

@@stylemejenn That would be amazing! You have such a great eye. I suggest you mainly focus on Essences. Kibbe is incredibly hard to figure out because David Kibbe is kind of all over the place in his explanations and there is no clarity. His system still helped me out since a lot of it focuses on how fabric hangs on the body. But it took years of studying. The truth is that Essences brought me to the same outcome as Kibbe but it was much easier to figure out and apply.

  • @BbGun-lw5vi

@@JuliaKirsty You did such an incredible job of explaining why color theory is so hard to get right. Like you, I’ve been obsessed with color theory, even before I knew about seasonal color analysis. I always saw colors differently than the people around me. I remember dyeing my hair when I was a teenager. Red the first time, then black, and last, honey blond. The honey blond was so pretty but I could see immediately that it made my skin look yellow and I looked bloated. Everything just looked off. You’re so right that you can’t understand color without looking at everything else. And like you said, color theory is just one part of a bigger puzzle that has other puzzle pieces like Essences and Kibbe. And the equation is much more complicated than it looks at first. I always tell people to start with Essences since it’s much easier to grasp than Kibbe. There is just so much misinformation when it comes to Kibbe.

I was always told that I had something dark about me (I have black-brown hair, but a light, white skin tone -> so I could never fully understand this statement). Then I discovered the 12 and 16 system and thought: hey, then I must be Dark Autumn or Dark Winter. Dark Winter was somehow eliminated because the strong, saturated colors were somehow too much. But I can't handle Dark Autumn either. Especially not when it comes to make-up. And now I discovered that I have an olive skin tone... It couldn't be more complicated. You would think that high contrast can actually handle high contrast, but colors like (dark) dusty rose, mauve, dusty forest or bottle green etc. actually work best. For example, "Dark Mauve" is the perfect lipstick color for me! I wouldn't have thought of that in my life! When everyone categorized me as Autumn and/or Winter. Thanks to you, I now know how to classify my “color problem”. So thank you so much Jenn!

Hi Jenn, First off, I love love your thorough analyses of style and beauty systems. They are honestly so intelligent and perceptive. Having watched your content on face proportions and how to flatter these with makeup and hair, I was wondering whether you would consider making a video on piercing placements? My hypothesis is that piercings can be used both to balance out proportions as well as highlight certain features. But there are so many things to consider, when looking at a face holistically and thus I get confused. If you don't feel like taking on this topic in a youtube video, I would, alternatively, be interested in learning, whether this topic of flattering piercings could be dealt with in one of your personal analyses on your site? Thank you so much!!! I don't think I have a 100% figured it out BUT I think I'm closer to figuring it out. I was always sure I'm cool toned but I was confused between being a True Winter or True Summer, for me my main quality is being cool toned and I feel more comfortable in winter colors (might be just personal preference as I prefer to appear bolder over softer) but some of the colors from the True Winter pallet felt a bit to much and I mainly hate how the black and white combo looks on me, which made me realize I'm more of a middle contrast BUT the softeness of the True Summer pallet also felt wrong to me (in fact way more wrong compared to True Winter), something just looked off and made me washed out. I have light brown hair, brown eyes and very fair skin with quite some pinkness to it but I lack that greyish quality that people usually talk about when referring to Summers, I usually receive compliments wearing navy blue and when I have more of a dark cool toned red hair but people tend to say something seems off when I wear quite muded and low contrast clothes. I literally thought to myself that the True Winter pallet would be perfect if it was a little bit less intense, I just felt I was something in between True Winter and True Summer (leaning more towards winter), so I really think I'm a Soft Winter it just makes so much sense.

I redid the test on my skin to see if I'm warm or cool, and cool definitely looked better, because gold made me look yellow. I just landed myself in deep winter, pure black and white is fine, but they are indeed a little vit too much to look at on me, now that I've seen this, I'm convinced I'm a Deep Winter Soft. Definitely need that softness in my palette, explains why I'm so attracted to soft summer/ autumn palettes.

I'm glad to hear the video was able to provide you with some clarity! I find that temperature can be a tricky one if you're a deep or a soft since those seasons aren't affected by temperature as much as true seasons!

I am a brunette with pale skin and tests always gave deep winter but the color palette always looked bad on me! Red lipstick and red clothes on me look ridiculous! I need to use lipstick because if I wear red clothes I will look sick. I look better with soft rose lips and mauve, but they need to be soft colors

I'm curious what season Kaya Scodelario is in. I haven't seen anyone make a video about her, and people are discussing it on reddit but can't seem to agree on a season :D

I don't think the colors look bad on her, but just a little more "rushed" or "incomplete" imo!

Thank you SO MUCH for this. Do you know that there are almost no soft winter videos out there? Can you do more?

I have a more recent video called “Why do I look bad in both warm and cool colors?” where I talk a bit more about it (typing myself) and I also have another video coming out tomorrow that talks about it ❤️

I know I have soft coloring but I need that depth. Stores often have pastels or jewel tones. They really aren't helping me glow up right now lol

I believe I am a soft winter. There's not much on the internet about it and I wish I could find a good soft winter palette.
