Deep River - Robert Shaw Chorale (Spirituals) 1958

Музыка

I hope all of you enjoy this recording as much as I do. Robert Shaw is easily my favorite conductor of the 20th century. This album was one of the most influential albums for me as a child, and the songs were permanently burned into my psyche many years ago. My brother Eldo says this album also had a profound impact on him, and on future Kansas Youth Chorus selections. The longing for Heaven crying out from them moves me in a powerful way. I hope they provide you with comfort and pure musical enjoyment.
I looked high and low on the internet to find a CD of this album, but to no avail. Eventually I just decided to buy a record off of eBay and attempt it myself. I’m currently using Audacity free editing software and Windows Movie Maker for my recording projects. I'm an unabashed novice, so someone with a better skill set may have been able to do more.
I tried to clean up this recording without destroying the audio quality. I could only take off the top layer, so to speak, of the extraneous noises that vinyl creates. Multiple attempts to filter out more unwanted frequencies from the initial recording simply stole too much of the audio quality to make it worthwhile. The final result has that obvious vinyl “scratchy-scratchy” sound, but I’m just sentimental enough to love it and not care. I just didn’t want anyone to think that I turned on the record player, hit record, and said “good enough.” I really did try!
Here are all 16 tracks, in order:
1. Deep River
2. Didn't My Lord Deliver Daniel
3. Every Time I Feel The Spirit
4. I Wanna Be Ready
5. Swing Low, Sweet Chariot
6. This Ol' Hammer
7. This Little Light O' Mine
8. Who Is That Yonder
9. Lord, If I Got My Ticket
10. Soon One Mornin'
11. There Is A Balm In Gilead
12. Soon-a Will Be Done
13. My Lord, What A Morning
14. Dry Bones
15. Ain'-a That Good News
16. Set Down, Servant

I grew up with this music playing in our big 3 room apartment. We would get up early on Saturday mornings and clean the house. I love - love this music. It means the world to me. Mr. Shaw will live forever as long as this music is playing. Our children needs to hear this type of music - you can not miss the message. Thank you for sharing

Despite oppression, cruelty, injustice and unrighteousness GOD’s people were able to transcend all to create this beautiful music that testified that in the end all knees shall bow and every tongue will process the majesty and might of THE MOST HIGH GOD of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob!

So many years ago when I was in school, I heard this spiritual and all my fears about whether I could sing this went away. The spirituals of so many years ago that people of color sang came back and when I stood before the choral judges, my voice rose to heaven and I passed the grade. These spirituals will uplift anyone no matter the color. Blessings to all.

These great choral works bring back many wonderful memories as a high school chorister, with my mother Shirley Lee Cross as my musician mentor. How blessed she was to study and sing in the outstanding Tuskegee. Institute choral. As well, Donald Neuen, my University Choral conductor embellished my studies while at ESM. Mr. Neuen was a student of Robert Shaw and sang with choral. What Blessings I have truly experienced.

Douglas Murray brought me here. I didn't know what kind of music this was until now. It really reminds me of old Disney cartoons when they wanted to put music to an idyllic setting. I really liked the portions This Old Hammer and Swing Low Sweet Chariot. Very good music, very romantic yet strong sounding.

Thank you for bringing this to KZread. Music form the finest choral directors of the 20th. century - between Robert Shaw and Norman Luboff there is such great music for us to hang on to. When you listen to these great blended voices shaped by great directors it stays with you for a lifetime. Music with such feeling, so much soul cannot be contrived when it is sang 'a cappella'. I am 77 now and I am utterly transformed listening...

Back in '77/'78 a young lady who sang alto in the Shaw chorale in Atlanta was a customer of mine, and we spent quite a bit of time talking music, voice, and singing. She invited me to audition (I doubt seriously I'd have made the cut), but I was working full time and trying to finish my last year of college. I have regretted not taking the opportunity ever since. I found this wonderful album while searching for one of Shaw's Christmas albums. (It isn't Christmas if I haven't listened to the Shaw Chorale!) I've heard a couple of these pieces on other recordings, but the album as a whole is new to me. Thank you so much for sharing!

Absolutely astounding. You can certainly hear the difference in an analog recording versus a digital recording. The sound is so much richer, even with the slight fuzz. This is a truly wonderful arrangement, too. When I was in highschool we performed a number of these beautiful pieces. Daniel is one I very much remember, but a slightly different melody. Our choir was 212 voices, and the wall of sound is incredible.

many have commented that this recording takes them back to the last midcentury. My brother got ths album as aprt of an RCA record club in the early 60's. He and I wore it out. The voices are massively subperb, but is the faith of the songs to our God that moves me. The balck people that formed these songs had a faith born of the anvil. The light still shines across the centuries.

Brings back wonderful memories! I was very fortunate to sit in on the recording sessions of some of these. Took place in a decommissioned dance ballroom in NY City. I got in because I had been one of Shaw's paid tenors in his Shaker Heights Unitarian Church choir in the '50s. Definitely the best choral conductor of our era. The only one who could rival him was the great Robert Fountain of Oberlin Conservatory in Ohio, near Cleveland where Shaw was at the time.

I did not know of the connection until well after she was gone, but the premiere choral conductor in my home town during the 90s had worked closely with Shaw, and she in turn was chosen to assemble a choir to perform in Alaska with the Kamchatka Men's Choir and the National Symphony Orchestra, under the baton of Mstislav Rostropovich. It's no stretch to say that hearing this album as a lad put me on those risers.

One of my favorite albums. Unfortunately never reissued. I have two copies, one unsatisfactory (noisy) and one satisfactory. Thank you for posting this. Interestingly, none of the arrangements presented here -- except of “Set Down, Servant” and one other, which I can’t remember -- were by Shaw or his assistant Alice Parker. The pianist in “Dry Bones” is John Wustman, who was accompanist over several decades to several noted singers -- one was Luciano Pavarotti. This is one of my favorite Shaw albums, done in about 1957 or ‘58. “Set Down, Servant” was one of Shaw’s early successes. I wish I had the score. It’s just as fun to look at as it is to experience, or to conduct.

I was looking for evidence that 'chariot' in the song "Swing Low, Sweet Chariot" is pronounced with a silent 't'--à la française--because it comes up in a poem, Rayford's Song, by Lawson Inada. Indeed, they do so in this album in 1958. THANKS, again! ; )

Most of the arrangements here are by other arrangers. Alice's are Set Down Servant, and Lord, If I get a ticket. The others are by H. T. Burleigh, John W. Work III, Levi Dawson, and James Miller. I am not sure who arranged Who is that yonder. However, Alice Parker's arrangements stands up with this list of great arrangers.

This is so great, thank you very much for all of your hard work in making this classic LP sound so good. I too wish it was available on CD. Maybe sometime later hopefully.

Yes!!! Robert Shaw is also my favorite conductor (probably of all time if I had to choose) :-) However I admire so many conductors. Thank you so much for posting this. I absolutely love his spiritual arrangements and recordings with the RS Chorale. This unique and rich sound that the Chorale had brings such great feeling and old memories back. (Though I am not that old; my childhood was spent listening to these.) Is there a way you could possibly post any actual footage of Shaw as well? Perhaps any video concerts of his? As much as I admire his work, I have never really seen him properly like I have seen Leonard Bernstein, or Charles Munch...ect. For there are many video recordings of them but very little of Shaw (as far as video) can be found.

I have a much better transfer of this album (and many others) if anyone is interested. I had to buy six copies or so to get a decent one. I've never posted on youtube but I suppose I could figure it out.

We've just opened a new website all about Robert Shaw. I would like to post some of these old recordings at the site. You can get in touch with us through the site: robertshaw.website (yes, just put that in your browser) - hope to hear from ericyolanda

What a great post, effort and album. But seems to me that the pickup needle is running among the grooves with a extra weight, which produces a sound on the recording like a woool... woool. Would you try to do it again putting less weight on the needle? About the scratches: do you ever cleaned the record with water and soap? It helps to clean off any dust on the grooves and make better the sound quality.
