Absolutely astounding. You can certainly hear the difference in an analog recording versus a digital recording. The sound is so much richer, even with the slight fuzz. This is a truly wonderful arrangement, too. When I was in highschool we performed a number of these beautiful pieces. Daniel is one I very much remember, but a slightly different melody. Our choir was 212 voices, and the wall of sound is incredible.

many have commented that this recording takes them back to the last midcentury. My brother got ths album as aprt of an RCA record club in the early 60's. He and I wore it out. The voices are massively subperb, but is the faith of the songs to our God that moves me. The balck people that formed these songs had a faith born of the anvil. Back in '77/'78 a young lady who sang alto in the Shaw chorale in Atlanta was a customer of mine, and we spent quite a bit of time talking music, voice, and singing. She invited me to audition (I doubt seriously I'd have made the cut), but I was working full time and trying to finish my last year of college. I have regretted not taking the opportunity ever since. I found this wonderful album while searching for one of Shaw's Christmas albums. (It isn't Christmas if I haven't listened to the Shaw Chorale!) I've heard a couple of these pieces on other recordings, but the album as a whole is new to me. Thank you so much for sharing!

So many years ago when I was in school, I heard this spiritual and all my fears about whether I could sing this went away. The spirituals of so many years ago that people of color sang came back and when I stood before the choral judges, my voice rose to heaven and I passed the grade. These spirituals will uplift anyone no matter the color. Blessings to all.

Yes!!! Robert Shaw is also my favorite conductor (probably of all time if I had to choose) :-) However I admire so many conductors. Thank you so much for posting this. I absolutely love his spiritual arrangements and recordings with the RS Chorale. This unique and rich sound that the Chorale had brings such great feeling and old memories back. (Though I am not that old; my childhood was spent listening to these.) Is there a way you could possibly post any actual footage of Shaw as well? Perhaps any video concerts of his? As much as I admire his work, I have never really seen him properly like I have seen Leonard Bernstein, or Charles Munch...ect. For there are many video recordings of them but very little of Shaw (as far as video) can be found.

One of my favorite albums. Unfortunately never reissued. I have two copies, one unsatisfactory (noisy) and one satisfactory. Thank you for posting this. Interestingly, none of the arrangements presented here -- except of “Set Down, Servant” and one other, which I can’t remember -- were by Shaw or his assistant Alice Parker. The pianist in “Dry Bones” is John Wustman, who was accompanist over several decades to several noted singers -- one was Luciano Pavarotti. This is one of my favorite Shaw albums, done in about 1957 or ‘58. “Set Down, Servant” was one of Shaw’s early successes. I wish I had the score. It’s just as fun to look at as it is to experience, or to conduct.

What a great post, effort and album. But seems to me that the pickup needle is running among the grooves with a extra weight, which produces a sound on the recording like a woool... woool. Would you try to do it again putting less weight on the needle? About the scratches: do you ever cleaned the record with water and soap? It helps to clean off any dust on the grooves and make better the sound quality.
