Deep Purple's Burn - Jon Lord's Organ Explained
Музыка
/ @nickfoleyuk Good morning,
Frosty one today, hope you are all well and good and looking forward to the week ahead? (well maybe not that last part perhaps?).
Anyway, I have had a lot of people request this one over the years and I thought I would bite the bullet and show you how I, at least, have tackled this iconic Deep Purple song - BURN!
I have played this in my tribute band Pure Purple and we have played if with @atackband to good affect too, all be it in rehearsals.
I'll go through the song live for you and then dissect it from start to finish and explain all the organ sections that I play (along with some of the cheats!).
I would love to hear how you tackle it too?
the basic shape of the track is referenced here:
tabs.ultimate-guitar.com/tab/...
If you would like a breakdown of the guitar solo I can facilitate that for you too so do let me know ;-)
...and if you want to see the remote lockdown song and video that me and and few confined musicians came up with let me know and I might put it up as a little bonus material in the week! More from me exclusively at / nickfoleyuk

As a keyboard player who was raised on Deep Purple… it’s such an overwhelming honour to have a real birds-eye view of what’s going on behind the wheel of a real Hammond. You simply don’t find content like this. It’s fascinating on so many levels.

@@nickfoleyuk Looks pretty good to me! There are so many different versions to draw from I love to see which bits you pick - very different from how I do it, but that's mostly because I don't have a real Hammond!
I passed a pub in Ipswich advertising Deep Purple, I thought it can't be 'the' deep purple. It was. It was also the last time Jon Lord played. Gutted. Legend. Thanks for the experience
Thanks for another great tutorial, Nick, it really sounds like Jon's Hammond!

Great one, nice to see this as I always really liked this tune. I`ve always had quite a wide spectrum of music that influences me as a musician/composer from Rock to Thrash Metal and some types of electronic music through the ages too. As a Guitar Player my personal hero is Gary Holt from Exodus and Slayer but as for keyboards, any type/genre my hero is good old John Lord and his Rock Organ ..... just wished that I could play like him too ha ha........ still it`s great to see an overhead view of this being played at least I guess, cheers

I have done Sid but almost exclusively I take my Hammond XK-5 with a Leslie 3300 and a Marshall Plexi combo. I use an AB/Y pedal to switch from one to the other depending on the song
Love these Jon Lord videos man. I’ve got a quick question. I have a Hammond M100 and don’t have a Leslie of any kind. What’s the most affordable way for me to get my M100 sounding like a Jon Lord B3?
@nickfoleyuk
Жыл бұрын
A couple of ways mate. If you can get a quarter inch output the Neo Ventilator pedal is pretty impressive. Does Leslie emulation as well as overdrive. The cheapest of the Leslie’s used to be the solid state 760 that’s pretty good. Big old beasts but great.
Jon Lord, no pun intended, was the lord of the keys 🎹 as he could play a Hammond B3
Very interesting to watch this. (I play rock guitar for fun, but am a classically trained pianist and teach advanced piano students). Always loved the Jon Lord Hammond sound, especially the Highway Star intro on made in Japan. To me his sound is characterised by invariably very basic left hand approach and mainly chordal and arpeggiated right hand that is quite straightforward once the chords are clear. I was surprised by the amount of waterfall (do you call it that?) sweeping up and down the keys. Is that what he did on Burn? That aspect gets a tad wearing when you listen to the mix with the organ to the forefront. Must place a lot of wear on the keys? Nice channel. Have subscribed.

My favourite JL solo! I could never figure out what he was playing, so thanks for your tutorial! :) Why did you pull the 1“ drawbar out for the solo while percussion is on? Is your C3 modified?

Bellissimo video sinceri complimenti. Italy
Great video Nick. I used to be in a band that did about 5 or 6 Purple covers back in the 80's. One thing I could never figure out on the keyboard was when Lord and Blackmore played that really fast lick together that would mark the end of Space Truckin' or Wring That Neck (both the live versions). Do you know what I'm on about? Sounded almost arpeggio like. Would love to work that one out.

@@andykeys74 Yes, those are the root notes and chords and the same thing I played as I couldn't figure out the right hand. Lord played the right hand part live and I always wanted to emulate it. It's also on the studio version of Mandrake Root at the end of the keyboard solo but it sounds like Blackmore plays it alone. @Nick Foley - I know what you're on about but believe it was a different dual lick after the drum solo in the live Mule and I eventually figured that one out. Thanks for your responses.

Great... But in the guitar solo, the 4th chord is B flat, not A minor. And it's a pity that the main part of the organ solo was not played. Otherwise great, your hammond sounds cool! )))

@@montevova Yes, it is true. But in the original, only Richie plays C minor, and Lord holds a full chord of E flat major, he does not cut it off at notes. I mean studio version sure, not Made in Europe. In live version Jon plays C minor as well.

Awesome playing, nailed it. Jon Lord would be proud. Your guitarists tone is way too fizzy and distorted, nothing like Blackmore’s tone.

not really as i can see the notes your playing do not correspond with the notes im hearing….mainly under the gtr solo at 4.30 but even more obvious at 4.42 where the is an organ riff and you not even touching the keys … me thinks your miming to a track you’re pre recorded ……. have more confidence in your abilities
Не точная партия органа.
I'm no expert but the drummer sounds like he is rushing this and forcing the pace a tad too high, otherwise very enjoyable! :)
