Deep Purple Mark III Documentary (1974)

In 1974, Deep purple allowed local university student filmmakers to document the bands BURN tour in the UK. Great insights and amazingly candid backstage interviews from all the band, this is intimate look at the inner workings of Purple in '74 and the personalities, with new members David Coverdale and Glenn Hughes bringing a new energy to the band

Paice is the only remaining founder, Lord remainder long enough, until he focused on classical, which was his passion but sadly he lost his battle RIP. Blackmore was a different story. Took paice and lord years to figure him out. He was a complex character but he was very interesting and unique in his theory.

The part I found the most interesting is the Blackmore interview, by far. His statements are very blunt and even auto-depreciative, while at the same time very realistic in respect of the music business he's involved.I admire him as a player but also as someone who could make a lasting career in this business while having such personality and ego.

Note that back then Hughes was speaking in a Stafford accent rather than the mid Atlantic twang which he adopted shortly after. Coverdale was still very much North Yorkshire but became more clipped a year later, before going to an all out Roger Moore impression. In all honesty they were impressed by Jon and Ritchie's well to do Southern English accents and wanted to fit in with the image of the band as middle class. When Tommy Bolin joined in June 1975 Glenn began to copy his accent and David referenced him too. Years later Jon would use Tommy's Yah De Yah De phrase when going on about something.

Sometimes you just pick up another person's dialect when you're with them after a while.I don't think it was anything intentional. Except for David. It was actually embarrassing and I'm an American. And I could tell he was copying James Bond. I love Dave. I've seen him with white snake. Saw him with Purple, but man, he's gotta stop that phony accent.😂

DP defined rock music. Yes, there are great rock bands that came before and after, but "Purple" really took this genre to another level. They connected the past with the future. They were and are, the bridge. Musician's this good, in the same band, will always be a rarity. That's just the way it is. Nothing good lasts forever........

Penso che la Mark III, con solo due dischi in studio, sia stata la più grande rock band degli anni Settanta. Solo i Pink Floyd potevano competere in grandezza.

Amazing documentary. I was surprised to see that Glenn seems to be such an outsider. Now I see why his bonding with Tommy Bolin was so important to him. Black Sabbath has an album with Glenn on vocals, the last song in it, In Memory, is technically dedicated towards Tony Iommi's dad, but Glenn wrote the lyrics and after watching this documentary I cannot help but think it's in part dedicated to Bolin.

Geez, Ginger Baker was WAY WORSE than Blackmore, he was a mean, surly badger 'til the day he died, Blackmore on the other hand has mellowed as the years have gone on, he's still a quiet, reserved guy, but he's definitely not as volatile as he used to be, besides I've heard people bitchin' about him bein' a dick, HELLO, he's a friggin' Rock N' Roll musician, Rock ain't meant to be a safe, polite style of music, that's why it's called Rock N' Roll.

  • @obbor4

@@dinorocker8647 Why are you telling me this and what does it have to do with Ginger Baker? Ritchie has been talked about in interviews and books by everyone from Ian Gillan to Ronnie James Dio as the reason for why they left the bands that they were in with him. Deep Purple Mach III members, to a man, were relieved and elated to have Tommy Bolin join the band after Ritchie left to form Rainbow where he later ran into problems with Dio, Joe Lynn Turner, and Graham Bonnet. It was only after his present wife married him that he finally mellowed out and began making centuries-old music. None of this is news to anyone. And there is nothing to read into my comment complimenting his playing while stating the obvious about his difficulty getting along with people. He is the most impressive player that I've ever seen play live, but you can't change history. If you asked Blackmore, himself, he'd most likely tell you the same thing.

  • @dinorocker8647

    @dinorocker8647

@@obbor4 Well what you said at the very end that is what I meant, after he married Candice he did mellow out, as far as Ginger Baker goes, I saw the "Beware of Mr. Baker" documentary and Ginger was a real mean ass bastard throughout the documentary, yeah he gave a very colorful story of his life, but he still was a real mean badger, basically Ritchie did mellow out after he met Candice, whereas Ginger Baker never mellowed, and yeah I do know about the trouble with his bandmates in Purple and Rainbow, but I should've elaborated on what I said at the end of my comment about people who met him bitchin' about him bein' a dick, I meant after he married his wife, yeah I also know about Blackmore's altercations with the media back in the day, seriously the media even then was rife with the same shitbags we see in the media today, and I can't exactly say Blackmore was completely unjustified in his actions with 'em, geez take a look at the movies The Natural with Redford, and 59*, which was a movie that Billy Crystal directed which was about baseball players Mantle and Maris, and the media was portrayed quite accurately in those films, basically sayin' and doin' what ever they wanted to a celebrity, and gettin' away with it, and not givin' a damn what it does to 'em, shit in 59* Maris was brutally and cruelly assaulted by the media, and he almost was at the point where he wanted to commit suicide, so yeah the media are really no one's friends, all they care about are ratings and prestige, and they'll do anything to get it, even if they destroy someone's good name.

The production work is very high standard - one would hope it helped one or two of the makers get a job in the industry they were obviously suited for. Interesting comments from the band and no surprise to see Ritchie on his own; the interview is a real scoop, given some of his comments. The music is great of course and an interesting snapshot of the band on their first (?) UK tour.

Paradossi: I migliori tastieristi erano considerati Keith Emerson e Rick Wakeman, entrambi fan di Jon Lord. E di Blackmore come chitarrista che dire? Jimmy Page il primo ... Ritchie Blackmore l'UNICO ... Ogni volta che lo vedo in qualche vecchio filmato mi rendo conto come non ci sia trippa per gatti. Se si fosse saputo vendere come tanti, sarebbe stato riconosciuto unanimamente come l'UNICO.

10:45 what was that about? Some tension between Dave and Glenn?

Little things. Dave figured that he was hired as the singer so Glenn shouldn’t sing as much as he does. Glenn figured that he was hired as a singing bassist so he was entitled to sing as much as he wanted. Personally I agree with David. Glenn Hughes has a voice of an angel in studio recordings, but sounds awful live. Well, my opinion at least. 😊
