Highway Star, to me, doesn't get as much love as it should. It is one of the best car songs. Of course, the best part is Ritchie and Jon competing with each other, racing down the highway and changing gears on every turn. Damn, I love this song.

lf you're hearing" Machine Head " it's for the first time it's stunning . lf you're hearing it for the 100th times it's still a mindblower . lf you've heard it countless times it's still a brilliant album . Yet of all their albums" ln Rock" is the best album they ever created . Up there with Black Sabbath's debut as one of the best heavy Rock albums ever along with Led Zeppelin' first . All three are timeless .

Great review as always, love this album and the band were on fire during this time, nearly quite literally, the live 72 stuff I've had for a while now on double album, its very meaty and raw, I love to hear what the've done with the 5.1 and Atmos mixes, love the use of the words bollocks and organ in the same sentence really gets the point across, think I must part with my money for this piece of rock history.

I saw a video of Roger Glover talking about this 50th edition. In the booklet, there is picture of Roger and Ian Gillan and he said that is where they are writing the lyrics for Smoke on the Water. It almost brought tears to my eyes. When I played guitar and sang in a band in the 1970's, the crowd always loved this song and they would bug us to play it (which we did!)

I'm a Tidal listener and they offer this edition in their playlist, but it is mentioned that "the record company does not authorize the playback of these titles." I hope, in some time, the house will authorize it. Let's think this way! Machine Head is for me one of the best rock records of all time with Led Zep: 2, 4, PG; ACDC: Back a black; Van Halen: 1; Pink Floyd: DSOTM, WYWH, Animals; and a few other records. Please do detailed SOUND reviews where the recording of each instrument/voice is analyzed carefully.

Agreed! It's mastered a bit loudly but it's not overcompressed and it kicks major ass. This new 2024 Dweezil remix, IMHO, is not very good nor is the new remaster. Too loud and overly compressed (in the remix you can hear the different instruments pumping and breathing...vying for supremacy in a mix where there is no room to breathe). If you want to hear the original mix in all it's modern digital glory, listen to the HDTracks files in 24 bit 96K resolution. Sorry to step on anyone's toes but, lately, there are too many people throwing their hats into the 'remixing classic albums' arena who aren't necessarily qualified for the job and they don't all do a particularly good job or do the material justice. But, again, that's my personal opinion. Your mileage may vary.

There's a modicum of poetic justice to the idea that Dweezil would be the one who remastered this record. His father's misadventures in Montrose were a part of what inspired the writing of "Smoke on the Water".

Hi, Nice unboxing video, I not sure that I will jump of this. I do love this classic Album, since purchasing the original LP back in 72, over the decades I really have invested in the Album. I must have at least 6 different CD versions including all the past remasters and super deluxe editions, and the LP (Vinyl) again I have at I think 7 versions including Japanese releases, anniversary editions and remasters. So I am a little unsure if I really need this unless it appears in the bargin bin.

I have many versions too but I can tell from the remix of Smoke .. already out, that I will enjoy Dweezil’s work on this. However I liked the dry sound of the original .. quite modern sounding now as a lot of bands cut out overuse of reverb. Zeppelin’s albums can sound over produced to me now but I suppose that is part of what Pave brought to them.

I remember a Free, Deep Purple tour of Australia in the early seventies. Deep Purple were the headliners, and it was post Fireball, from memory. I was down the front at Festival Hall here in Melbourne; Free were absolutely sensational. Then Deep Purple came on; a couple of songs in Gillan walked off stage after some altercation with Blackmore, who then spun his guitar around his head and (as I recall) that was the end of the show. In other words, they were bloody awful! 😂 I stopped listening to them soon after: too much “rock”, not enough “roll”for me, and my Rolling Stones obsession continued. However, I love your reviews and all power to Deep Purple fans everywhere!! (Jon Lord…still love him!!)

Oh yeah, man they had such a groove. Also, I very much never seen a bass player move like Andy Fraser…I think there was so much space and air in their music that you just HAD to move to it. Paul Rogers really moved on stage as well. Yes, Free: why is it that we don’t talk about them more?? I also much preferred them to Deep Purple (and the heavier ROCK bands), and I think in my case it was because I was 11 in ‘63, and that music with it’s rock and ROLL really dictated what my true love in music would always be. Totally agree with you about Simon Kirke…god he could play, not adding fills to every space that didn’t need filling!

@@liammccaul6587 Fraser and Roger’s had decided to end the band before the Tour of Australia and Japan in May ‘71 but had to commit to do the gigs. They just weren’t getting on anymore musically. This really affected Koss badly as the band were his life and he had no other interests or hobbies apart from drugs which he proceeded to hit after the tour was over. They were on the verge of becoming massive but could not see it because Highway and The Stealer had not sold like Fire And Water and Alright Now had. A great shame. They tried to put it all back together in early ‘72 for Koss’ sake but it was too late as he was lost to addiction. Such a great shame as Free At Last and Heartbreaker do have great moments but Koss could not perform as he did on stage anymore as he was always tempted by the hangers on giving him something to intoxicate and incapacitate him rendering him unable to play well.

Thanks for the review. It’s been a “long haul” for long time DP fans over the 50 plus years since Mk.2 made their first studio album. I say “long haul” because some of the “rock cognoscenti” - at certain points during those decades - tended to “look down their noses” at DP. Aficionados never paid much heed to those snooty critics - nevertheless, it is gratifying now that the “golden period” of DP is more widely recognised as being “truly golden” - Tweezil Zappa is a son of Frank Zappa, as most of us know, and Frank Zappa’s reputation as a musical innovator was “right up there” so to have Tweezil do the re-mix of “Machine Head” does, I think, lay to rest, once and for all, the idea that DP were just “upstarts” not worthy of mention in the same breathe as Led Zeppelin or Cream !

I have the 2018 limited edition purple vinyl edition which apparently fetches nearly 100 usd. And sounds phenomenal, especially when comparing to an OG press. I wonder if This 50th anniversary press sounds any better than mine. I just can’t imagine it sounding any better tbh

I hope this is available without the vinyl, because I haven't bought an LP since Michael Jackson's BAD back in the 80s, and I'm not about to start buying them again.

I love the 2024 remix of smoke particularly the end section and everyone should definitely check out the new smoke video as well! Having said that, not sure I will be shelling out £89 for more versions of these songs however much I love them.

I have many versions of MH but I can tell from the remix of Smoke .. already out, that I will enjoy Dweezil’s work on this. (especially the surround mix) However I always liked the dry sound of the original .. quite modern sounding now as a lot of bands from the 80’s/90’s cut out overuse of reverb (Rick Rubin’s production on “Electric”.. by The Cult). Zeppelin’s albums can sound over produced to me now but I suppose that is part of what Page brought to them. Will be nice to see Purple and this monumental album getting some love again. The best live rock band .. ever IMO

On the fence here. This is my favorite album by them and of course already have it and never said to myself " the mixing could have been better". I'm also not a fan of CDs. Maybe if this set had also included a live LP and a hard cover photo album would I buy. I just don't see a reason to purchase an lp I already have.

Nothing will match buying the very first original release back in 1972 when I was in high school. Oh the thrill of it all.. when we first heard the opening lines to Smoke on the water for the first time. . I would not want to buy this and spoil my memory of the original. However, this looks very nice and expensive and what is the purpose of this then to only re-hash something that was done eons ago and will never be the same in my humble opinion. BUT, it's good to support the old masters.
