Smoke on the Water for Deep Purple is kinda similar to Paranoid for Black Sabbath. Everybody knows it and lots of people don't know anything but it. But all in all both songs are pretty simple, no more than decent, far from the best in both bands catalogues.

Who are these people? These people are Deep Purple one of the greatest bands ever, particularly with this lineup: Jon Lord, organ, Ritchie Blackmore, guitar, Ian Paice, drums, Roger Glover, bass, and Ian Gillan, vocals. Each of these guys was a superb musician in his own right and the great Ritchie Blackmore a true virtuoso of a guitar player. By the way, in an interview Blackmore mentioned that the intro to Child in Time was inspired by a song, Bombay Calling, by the legendary San Francisco band It's A Beautiful Day, which unfortunately only stayed together for a short period of time (give them a listen).

I was lucky enough to have seen them 5 times with the Mark II lineup and Child In Time was always the highlight of the show. Ian Gillan is an incredible vocalist and Ian Paice is a phenomenal drummer, Jon Lord is Lord of the keys, Ritchie is a craftsman guitarist and Roger Glover holds it all together. I really like the new Portable Door song, Ian doesn't sing like this anymore but he is almost 80 years old. It isn't this lineup anymore but it's still not bad

About the audience, I had the same reaction at first the first time I saw this. Which I grew up with all their albums but I never saw this video until maybe 10 years ago. And it's great. But it was part of a television show, and that's why the monitor setup wasn't that great, and in fact, back then, to try to get the best recording they could, they commanded the studio audience to be as quiet as they could until the end. But there is other footage from them from in their Hay Day where they are at Arena Rock shows and people are going crazy. So please don't get the wrong idea. So glad you reacted to this.

It's one of 4 tracks that were recorded in 1970 at The Granada Studios in Manchester for a TV show, the others being Mandrake Root, Wring that Neck and Speed King. The reason there's a lack of reaction from the audience is that they were under strict instructions not to move during the filming in case they made any noise that could potentially be heard on the recording.

Smoke on The Water was one of a few " radio friendly" songs they did with Ian on vocals, but their core rock was never RADIO friendly. Of the so called " Holy Trinity" ( Deep Purple, Black Sabbath & Led Zepplin ), Purple were the first to explore what is now called Heavy Metal. Bass player Roger Glover was an excellant MUSICIAN and respected bass player, Jon Lord on Hammond Organ & Ritchie Blackmore added Bach and other classical writers to their hard and heavy rock, becoming the expected guitar solos of later heavy metal guitarists. Ritchie is a guitar legend who was shredding before Van Halen was born, a la his chosen classical riffs. Jon Lord was an accomplished pipe organ player and Hammond organ expert. Ian Paice on drums was a trained or at least partly trained jazz drummer who made a simple basic jazz drum kit sound bigger than the monster kits used by other great rock drummers. Deep Purple were big and getting bigger without much radio airplay when Led Zepplin arrived and got a lot more radio time as did Black Sabbath...... Radio rules popular music. Those that get radio airtime sell records, those that dont might have the biggest fan base and the biggest concerts.......but they dont sell records in bulk numbers.

This song actually split the band up. Ian Gillian knew that he might be damaging his vocal chords by keep singing it, so he wanted to take it off the set list, but Richie Blackmore kept introducing it, and once the crowd thought they were going to play it, there would have been a riot if they didn't.

Ouch! Yeh, musicians don't always realize that our body, our voice is our instrument. We can't just sat it down and it works whenever you pick it up. Vocalists are athletes and everyone is so different. Some can smoke and drink and sing (although, eventually there will be damage but often managable) but some can't even be around air conditioner. I can't stand stage fog, it dries my voice out and it sucks, cause it looks awesome. I also don't drink when on tour. Every singer has to learn what works and what doesn't, what is sustainable and what is damaging. Rock singers in general put way more strain on their voice than pop singers. The Rockstar Life is not as easy as most people think. Looks glamorous on the outside. Thanks for sharing that, I had no idea.

Just in the unlikely event that no one has mentioned it yet. This is a Live In-Studio recording event. The people in the audience have been told not to make any noise or move around much, so's not to be distractions from the audio and video recording process. Also, they're Brits, a bit more understated than we are "over here." 🙃

The queen of vibrato is Chrissie Hynde of the Pretenders. I don’t think she could sing without vibrato if she tried. “I’ll Stand by You” is an excellent example. And as male vocalists go, Danny Whitten of the band Crazy Horse had some amazingly beautiful vibrato. Check out his song “I Don’t Want To Talk About It” to hear that. Sadly, Danny passed away in 1972. In 1975, Rod Stewart covered Danny’s song and had a huge hit with it. Danny’s song is one of the most beautiful ballads ever. It has few lyrics but a melody that is just beautiful! In 2004 Rod sang the song with a young gal, Amy Belle, for the first time ever as a duet. Amy was discovered busking at an underground subway station in Glasgow and Rod invited her to his show at the Royal Albert Hall. It is an epic performance. If you don’t want to react to it, please listen and enjoy! “I Don’t Want to Talk About It” - Rod Stewart & Amy Belle live 2004 kzread.info/dash/bejne/qWhqxLmxg5yvmrw.htmlsi=3A8_ibdtm5HKfjgZ

Thanks so much! Chrissie is great. I love that song, although I'm not a huge fan of too much vibrato, it does add character and works well for certain singers, I now need to re-listen to that song ;) As far as Danny and Rod covering it, I will add it to my list. How awesome of Rod to invite that girl on stage. Can't wait.

As others have said, the audience was told to sit still and be quiet. It was VERY expensive to video tape in a studio like this at that time, and as the producers would not want to have to do multiple re takes, it was verboten to move or make noise. Essentially it was a condition of allowing them in as audience. If you liked this display of incredible vocal gymnastics, then you should check out Hocus Pocus by the group Focus, it is a unique and even wilder vocal manipulation. kzread.info/dash/bejne/ea2stdiTf8XfZZc.html ( Hocus Pocus - Focus | The Midnight Special )

Portable Door is a good song, but not on par with their music back in their prime. Also, there have been personnel changes over the years. The current band does include the original drummer and the singer and bass player from this Child in Time song, but neither of them were original members but were members of the bands most successful lineup. The keyboard player passed away and they have a good solid replacement who has been around awhile and in several successful bands. The guitarist is new and younger as the original guitarist Ritchie Blackmore who didn't get along very well with Ian Giillan the singer has spent the past 20 years or so with a folky/Renaissance band with his wife as lead singer in the band Blackmore's Night. He still will dazzle with a nice guitar solo here and there when he's not playing mandolin or other stringed instrument.
