This is one of the wildest vocal performances ever recorded. Another reactor rightly called this "controlled chaos". The "piano" as you call it is actually a Hammond B3 / C3 organ that is full of electronic tubes and run into Leslie speaker cabinets. This particular lineup of band members is commonly called the Mark II version of Deep Purple and is responsible for most of their hit records.

"Child In Time" gives me goosebumps every time I hear it, It's that good. Ian Gillans voice is ridiculous belting them notes out and slowing down with soul. John Lord beating on the keyboards like it owes him money, Ritchie shredding on that beautiful Gibson ES-335, Paice on drums, and Glover on bass makes one hell of a band. Great reaction, your facial reaction to Ian Gillian's voice on them high notes was priceless. 👍

There was a reason why one music magazine writer called Ian Gillan the (paraphrasing here) 'Golden Throat of Rock 'n' Roll'. This is why. Ian used to be able to belt out those screams easily, night after night. Unfortunately, he's no longer able to perform this song. The toll of years has worn out his throat. Jon Lord was one of the best keyboardists in rock. His distinctive sound came from plugging that Hammond B3 organ into a Marshall amplifier stack. Ritchie Blackmore was, and still is, a fantastic guitarist and has influenced many people to learn guitar. Ian Paice (pronounced like 'Pace') is one of the best drummers in rock history (and one of my main influences as a young drummer back in the day). Roger Glover is the fantastic bassist you see here. This was the 'Mark II' version of Deep Purple, and by far the best version of the group. Glad you got the chance to hear them!

Had the privilege to see Deep Purple live in the early eighties. When they played this song, I was blown away by Ian Gillian’s vocals. He was in his forties by then, but he hadn’t lost any vocal power. I didn’t know until then that he was the voice of Jesus on the original brown colored album “Jesus Christ Superstar “ that predated the motion picture. Ian really demonstrates those powerful vocals in that musical.

I think its is so great that someone your age... can see how talented each member of the band was. The lead singer especially because there was no auto tune back in these days... And not all the little helpers that are available to guitar players today either. If you messed up on these instruments there was no way to hide it. And doing live meant the drummer better get things write or he throws everyone off. So it is so refreshing to see your reaction to music that was probably before your grandmas time lol. I was 6 when they were doing this performance and I am old enough to be your granny lol

Ok, there was more frivolous music around at that time too, but this is just one example of why music meant so much to more to my generation - I just had to get a guitar and join this world and am still into it at 62. Great to see younger people appreciating it today - had to smile with the Hammond organ intro described as piano. Great stuff.

You now see why this is my favorite Deep Purple song and one of my favorite songs ever. I've loved this band for over 50 years. The members of the group were among the best at their instruments at the time. Ian Paice on drums, Ritchie Blackmore as the guitar god, Roger Glover on bass, Jon Lord on organ ans the incomparable Ian Gillan on vocals. Gillan wrote the lyrics as a Vietnam war protest song.

You missed the most phenomenal 2 decades the 60's and the 70's where all this music basically started. Back then there was pretty much free reign for the bands in the studio to experiment. Bands like these guys practically wrote/constructed opus's with key changes, time signature changes. They made the songs tell entire stories. These days?? Pfft nothing but rubbish on our radios. I do however HIGHLY recommend Ayreon for example. The musicians and vocalists there are mind blowing. There are many metal heavy and otherwise bands in Europe doing stuff like this which is well worth the listen.

Informative reaction - thank yoU! I think this piece is masterful. Even ignoring the lyrics, my soul is transported to weirdly frightening and tragic parts of the early 70s. Hammond B3 history in rock is interesting, often played through the whirling Leslie speakers, which are still made -- sounds which are imitated in many modern keyboards.

Blackmore left Deep Purple (also founder) after band reunited for their Perfect Strangers album for more solo stuff. Ian Gillan, singer, Roger Glover, Bassist and Ian Paice, drums are still touring together today with Jon Lord retired in 2002 and died in 2012. His replacement since 2002, Don Airey on keyboards. Ritchie's replacement was Steve Morse until 2022. His replacement is Simon McBride.

I saw them in concert 5 times, 4 with this iconic lineup! They don't perform it live anymore due to their age. They are still together with a different lineup. Ian Gillan(vocals), Roger Glover( bass) and Ian Paice(drums) are the only 3 from this lineup still in the band. Jon Lord(keyboards) passed away in 2012 and Ritchie Blackmore(guitar) is performing with his wife in a band called Blackmore's Knight!

Thank you for this reaction to one of my favourite 5 bands EVER (the others being The Beach Boys, Hawkwind, Nightwish and Band-Maid). Ian Gillan's voice was simply the best at this time , and he is still singing well over 50 years later (although he can no longer hit those top notes !). This version of Deep Purple (known as MkII) is my favourite, Ritchie Blackmore was creating new ways to play the guitar with speed and precision which is still a huge influence on modern players, Ian Paice brought amazing riffs to to the songs and his flams and rolls are second to none, Jon Lord was simply the best rock keyboard player of his age and Roger Glover was a very talented bass player but also brought amazing song writing skills and production skills to the band. Other songs to check out from this version of the band include 'Speed King', 'Lazy' and the great 'Highway Star'. You might also want to check out 'Burn' by the next version of the band with different vocalists after Gillan and Glover left the band. I love your reactions generally so keep doing what you do !
