Just to clarify, Ethiopian is a nationality not a language. The Weeknd was taught Amharic which is one of the main languages in Ethiopia.

On the topic of weird samples Abel did, I'm surprised that Out of Time didn't get a little shoutout on Dawn FM. I was genuinely confused and thought I accidentally added Midnight Pretenders to queue, but it goes really well within the album.

In The Night is my single favourite Weeknd song. It sounds awesome, and its portrayal of its lyrical content is better executed than it has any right to be. Also, “I don’t think you understand” calls back to Andre 3000’s “Y’all don’t wanna hear me, you just wanna dance” in all the right ways.

Her online behavior lately has been super messy and embarrassing, but I don't entirely disagree with her that she's consistently never gotten the credit she's due, because her fanbase is the exact type of women society LOVES to belittle. Most other female artists get a mixture of unfair hate and indignant defense, but Lana was like Ke$ha (before the DR. Luke stuff came out) where it was just universally accepted you were allowed to shit on these women as much as you wanted without even trying to follow it up with something nice about them. And with Ke$ha, it really was mindless pop garbage being pumped out for the sake of hits. But Lana was out there baring her soul and getting treated like a walking punchline As someone who struggled with limerance and being attracted to men who brought out my daddy issues, Lana's music taps into a feeling I feel like is really rare to be acknowledged in mainstream media. It's not love, it doesn't even feel like what you were told love was supposed to feel like, but its all you god damn have so you cling to it to keep from drowning. And you feel like a fool, because you know you're being "messy' and "*that* girl". It reminds me a lot of the backlash the song "prom queen" by beach Bunny got. People who make anthems for broken teenage girls get treated as if they're *encouraging* being broken, as if the only songs for teen girls need to be hearing are "strong empowered anthems". Women who refuse to hide their trauma, who refuse to put up a strong face about it, who admit they feel weak and helpless and stupid a lot.....they're shoved to the side for another generic song that pretends the majority of adult women are doing just fine, actually. Lana is the ANTITHESIS of the trend to push constantly superficial messages of empowered woman, girl bosses, etc She is the traumatized woman laid bare.

@@ruminationstation4200 Wow. Thank you so much for sharing this. And you’re absolutely right. I think that in some ways she’s ALWAYS ahead of her time cause she chooses to look inward, to her muse, to her deepest and oldest influences, to poetry, to literature etc other than to look at what her contemporaries are doing. I think she’s finally getting her flowers for the door she’s opened. Yes, her vulnerability was very “dressed up” and that’s what made people cynical of her. But it’s not any less real, and now the mainstream audience sees it. Her music definitely allowed “fragile” and “damaged” women to find the beauty in their life and realize that it’s okay to not have their shit together all the time. But as Lana evolved to a more mature and wise Lana, the audience saw in her an example of strength. Of someone who bypassed and survived an incredible amount of hate and cynicism. So yeah, you’re absolutely right.

Dawn FM means so much to me. It was released the night following a really hard day. I was sent home from school because I was exposed to covid the day before my school's play (that I had a somewhat large role in) had opening night. Months of work and relationships just crumbled in a matter of minutes, leaving me just as alone as I was when After Hours dropped. I had nothing else to do at home, so I decided to stay up and listen to Dawn FM as it released. The comfort that this music gave me was really strange, as I wouldn't have expected it from The Weeknd of all artists. Anyways, thanks for doing a DDD on The Weeknd, it was a nice reminder of how music has saved me in a lot of situations.

Dawn FM was one of my favorite albums to come out recently, and that came as a shock as I was never really into Abel's themes of drugs and despair coupled with the dark production. I know that a lot of people love his older stuff and maybe don't enjoy his recent offerings because of how pop friendly they are, but I think that he reached a good compromise by maximizing this pop appeal and keeping in touch with his earlier themes in a smart way. I was doing a mini tour of Canadian artists, Starting with Carly Rae Jepson, going to Justin Bieber, and then Abel here (and then got out of Canada and went to Barbados ☂️). A lot of Weeknd songs started to blend in with each other because of the similar content of many of them but it was an interesting time, especially Dawn FM which as a concept was just very interesting. I wish you were able to appreciate Kiss Land more. I think the fact that it's in a weird position in his discography makes it very overlooked considering there aren't any big hits on it and it's generally overlooked in his catalog, but it's my personal favorite. The album is a true masterpiece from top to bottom and I think it's lyrically his best too. He tells such a clear, vivid, and direct story about his experiences throughout his first tour. I feel as if it is structured very similarly to House Of Balloons. The first tracks are setting the stage, it really gets deep towards the third quarter with , the songs right before the outro are him "coming off of" the high of the album, and the last song is where he loses control of his emotions and they get the best of him.

I'm canadian, and I first heard The Weeknd on a obscure music blog in 2011 which linked to High For This and Wicked Games and my mind was BLOWN. His voice was unbelievable and I fell in love with his atmospheric sad beats. I was hooked from that very moment and I haved followed him ever since. At the Superbowl, when the snippet from House of Balloons came on, morphing to the finale with Blinding Lights, it brought me back to that moment and I almost cried ! I do agree After Hours is his best album yet. Anytime he collaborates with Max Martin or Ohneotrix Point Never, they make absolute bangers. I love how the 80's synth sound suits his style and his voice perfectly, and I hope he does continue in the same vein for his next projects.

My favourite thing about Abel that few people talk about is how much of a nerd for music and cinema he is. His horror movie influences, his passion for French house (like Daft Punk and Gesaffelstein), the interest in 80's music in general (and not just the obvious artists) - it's all there. For an artist his size, the fact that he doubled down on his influences over the years and brought them to the mainstream proves that he has a genuine interest for them.

House of Balloons/Glass Table Girls is probably my favorite song ever. I have two memories attached to experiencing it: 1. when i saw him in lollapalooza chile he played Glass Table Girls and i was fortunate enough to annoy everybody as i rapped every single line from heart. 2. i was staying in my boyfriends house when abel did the Superbowl Half Time and he doesn't have cable so he found an obviously super legal way to stream it on the internet. i had to listen to it on his computer with headphones while he was studying and when the chorus of HoB started i screamed at the top of my lungs with excitement and my bf had no idea why.

I remember listening to Call Out My Name for the first time when I did my Weeknd discog dive. I remember hearing the first chorus happen. Obviously it blew me away, I was just stunned at the explosion of vocals and sound. The second verse is about to end, and I say to myself: “But there’s no way he can top the first chorus vocally, it’ll just be the same thing.” Then bam, the reverbed vocals came in, and chills went throughout my body. That part made me feel like I was ascending. I think Call Out My Name is my favorite Weeknd song since i’m a bigger fan of his slower tempo tracks, but no song has made me feel the way that one did in a while, and sometimes I still get that feeling when I listen to it.
