Because Prince stated that he didn't release it then because it seemed like a very angry and bitter album, and he didn't want to be remembered like that if he were to die then. (He was obsessed with spirituality and mortality at that time.) This is around the 37-40 min. mark in the video, for reference.

This man shared the stage with The Rolling Stones, was toe to toe with Michael Jackson, kept putting out song after song even through the eras of Grunge and Hiphop, gave The Weeknd his first American Music Award, and made a halftime show impossible to top. Prince isn’t just another artist, he is THE artist.

Well it's even better then "toe to toe" with lip syncer Michael Jackson (LOL!). David Bowie admired him, Bob Dylan wanted to be produced by him, Punks like The Sex Pistols and The Clash respected him, it was Miles Davis favorite artist, Eric Clapton say Prince was the best guitar player etc.

@@horrorpowerfilms9481 Michael Jackson had been performing since the age of five (MUCH longer than Prince) and sang live throughout 3 decades, until the 90s when his health issues caught up. even then he sang mostly live. (while actually dancing!) Completely unnecessary to take a hit.

Fun fact: Pat Smear, guitarist for the Germs and the Foo Fighters, was one of the background dancers of the music video for Raspberry Beret. He was almost kicked out during its filming because he couldn't quite keep in sync with the rest of the dancers. However, he was permitted to stay because, according to Grohl, one of the bodyguards relayed to Pat that Prince liked his hair. The degrees of seperation between Prince and hardcore punk/Foo Fighters are surprisingly low.

@@davidgold5047 My entryway into Prince was 1) the 2017 deluxe edition of _Purple Rain_ with a bunch of vault tracks from that era, followed by 2) a zip file with considerably more unreleased vault tracks, and the fact that all through his creative peak he was getting in the studio at seemingly every single waking moment where he could theoretically be in a studio and cutting hours upon hours of material that equaled or bettered all the revered classics he was actually putting out into the world, just for the sake of, like, roster depth in the selection process for later releases, or so he’d have something on hand if literally any musician came calling looking to pay cash for a Prince song, just blows my mind. It’s like the perennial joke/downvoted-on-Reddit idle speculation/“Bionicle dream” meme of your favorite act doing a Secret Good Album that inexplicably never saw the light of day until right now when you were really in need of something good from them, except it’s real and he did it like a hundred times over.

Susan Rogers and Andre Cymone said he had one of those conditions where your mind just doesn’t stop. I think that and his passion for music played a big roll in his career.

Fun fact: the album version of Purple Rain is actually a live track, recorded at Minneapolis’ own legendary music venue First Ave. Yeah, you read that right. Prince did that shit LIVE.

The hard transition from Micheal Snare loosing his mind over trying to find anything to say about the post N.E.W.S. Prince albums to Prince’s unhinged tweets made me fully start wheezing on my work shift. Amazing.

I'm from Minnesota and my band director told us how the old band director at Central (the high school Prince attended) gave Prince his own key to the practice room because he was there every morning before school to play the piano. He wasn't just a pop star, he was a true musician and that comes through in his music.

I used to know a guy, not a friend, but an acquaintance, who fancied himself a guitar player. Not just a guitar player, but a blues guitar player. And he firmly held that Prince was just another 80s pop star, no more relevant or talented than someone like George Michael or Bobby Brown (I'm not knocking either of them, necessarily, just pointing out that there's a LONG league of difference between artists of that caliber and PRINCE). Then I had the opportunity to play him the video of that solo from the Hall of Fame. After watching the video, he didn't say anything for about ten seconds, then said, "Ok, so apparently, I need to rethink my entire life." YES. YES, YOU DO.

If i were trying to explain it to someone id say Prince is a) rooted in more black music for lack of a better term. Jazz, r&b, funk, so a lot of his career is writing brilliant rhythm lines that sometimes get lost underneath all the production classic rock fans arent going to care for. And he is a pop star too, he was a lot of things. Prince did later drift into rock (has dude never heard the Purple Rain solo) but as someone who fancied himself a composer, he showed a lot of restraint. You dont hear Prince doing crazy solos on 85% of his studio discography but he has plenty. In his live performances you get to see him really rocking out and doing solos/improv For another performance to show people i recommend the Saturday Night Live version of Fury. He soloes between every verse, very Hendrix esque and high energy. Imo that one is better than Gently Weeps but doesnt have the cool surprise factor i guess

I have a pretty good ear and remember mistaking a live recording of prince for jimi hendrix. I was in the other room, but the dude is as talented as anyone. His first albums are jazzy as hell and he's playing all the instruments.

Get george michael’s name out of your mouth, that man was one of the most talented artists in popular music history. i think you and your friend both need to rethink what makes someone talented. Anybody, with enough time and effort, can play a crazy guitar solo. Writing, arranging and performing songs is an individual talent and arguably where the real skill lies in all popular music. I’m taking a degree in popular music and that is basically the first thing they tell us in every class i take and, as someone who makes music, I wholeheartedly agree. George michael singlehandedly wrote and produced most of his and wham’s catalogue. That is an insane level of achievement, one at a similar level to prince though perhaps slightly degraded by the fact that he was less prolific than prince. I don’t know about his instrumental talents but to be honest i don’t really care.

@@rugrugrugrugGeorge Michael was an incredible singer and songwriter. Prince was an incredible singer, songwriter, dancer, producer, and instrumentalist. Prince changed the music scene in the 80s and was a huge influence on other artists up until the present day, and was an icon. He was one of the big three along with Michael Jackson and Madonna. As a guitarist alone he was one of the best. He also played the piano beautifully and most other instruments. He broke the mould, and was ahead of his time (in the 80s certainly). I urge you to watch the Sign o’ the Times concert movie and you can search for his 1988 concert Lovesexy on here (the full two hour version). He was an electric live performer. That’s why George himself adored Prince, as so many incredible artists also did.

I've been thinking for awhile that Prince was a DDD that needed to be done just due to his level of impact, but that the monolithic nature of the discography itself would make that challenging. Getting the notification for this vid and seeing that it's nearly two hours long, you've turned me into Jeff Goldblum. You crazy son of a bitch, you did it!

I totally get why you didn’t mention it, but Prince’s guest spot on ‘Givin’ Em What They Love’ by Janelle Monae is EXCELLENT. I wish they got to do more together, but his influence on their work has been so evident on Dirty Computer and The Age of Pleasure. Also, the full story behind ‘The Song of the Heart’ from Happy Feet is so funny because he initially turned down the filmmakers’ request to use ‘Kiss’. George Miller sent him a copy of the movie on appeal and Prince turned out to love it SO much, he granted permission for ‘Kiss’ and offered to write an original song.

The thing about Prince is that he will always get respect as a musician's musician. The man plays a crazy amount of instruments, never bound himself to one genre, and always plays them with the idea of positivity and love in mind, even if it were vengeful. And as far as I know, he tried to rely on sincerity of the heart and mind when writing it. Regardless of the people who may have had problems in the past, there was no denying that his passion for art and music was infectious. Who you know can make an R&B, rock, jazz, gospel, rock, folk and pop album or song in the same album? HE may have had trouble as far as quality control, but you can't ever say it wasn't created with love for the craft.

This Deep Discog Dive could not have been timed better. Up until very recently I never saw the appeal of Prince at all, but two months ago my mom passed away. While I wouldn’t say that Prince was her favorite artist, she still loved him a lot. After she died I decided to finally check out Prince and I now think he’s absolutely incredible. Definitely my best new artist this. It’s a shame that I was never able to talk to my mom about it but that’s alright. What isn’t a shame is getting a 2 hour video going through Prince’s entire career. Like always, you did such an amazing job. Thank you so much for making this video.

Janelle Monáe and Prince had a solid song together on her Electric Lady album.

Mic touched on it but that super bowl halftime show is a legendary performance and still the best halftime show of all time. It felt like a true celebration of music with Prince classics mixed with covers of everything from CCR to the Foo Fighters. It's still the only halftime show to date to take place during a downpour which makes closing the show with Purple Rain an unforgettable experience. Legendary 🏆💜

One of my friends was in the crowd of people who were standing right by the stage for Prince's Halftime show and she said it was torrential rains and that she was shocked that Prince still agreed to play the show because of how bad the weather was that night. He played his a** off in a Florida storm, with live instruments and his mic was on...greatness personified Period. I went to Paisley Park a few years ago and saw the guitar he used during that Halftime performance on display and they said it was so water damaged by that storm that they couldn't repair it. Prince played Purple Rain in the rain and he didn't disappoint. Even his worst album is better than most of the mindless drivel that is popular nowadays..I miss him so much 😞

I think it was ironic that everyone was aghast that JT ripped off part of JJ's outfit and we saw her nipple for like 2 seconds, but when prince projects a 20' tall silhouette of himself stroking his..guitar... no one said shit. And it totally was meant to look like a dick and balls. I guess no one wanted to be the person to tell Prince he was naughty for being too Prince.

In addition to all this he was also producing albums for The Time (4), Vanity 6 (1), Appolonia 6 (1), Sheila E (3), Jill Jones (1), Madhouse (4ish), and numerous others - he was beyond prolific. To the point that for every Prince song you don't like, theres at least 3 that you are going to LOVE

If Dirty Mind was the album that established Prince’s credibility.. If 1999 was the album that brought him into the crossover mainstream.. And if Purple Rain was the album that made him a global superstar.. SIGN "☮︎" THE TIMES was the album that truly made him into a true all-time great *ARTIST!*

I remember where I was when Prince died too. I’d just started fully appreciating his work through Purple Rain and 1999. I was on a train when I read it. First thing I did was tell my friend who was also a super fan of his, and then I just immediately played Purple Rain. A few days after, Sometimes it Snows in April was everywhere in the UK as people remembered Prince through it. This was late April. And it started snowing. Honest to god snow in April. Never seen it before at that time of year, never seen it since. I’m not spiritual or theistic by any means, but that’s the one moment I thought that maybe someone gave us one last moment of beauty from a life after ours. And it could only have been someone as eternal as Prince. An incredible video, Mr. Snare. Amazing work for an amazing artist.

Prince was very serious about complete ownership. I couldn’t believe he was gone until his music started being uploaded again, with no problem. Circa 2010 I even got in trouble for “When Doves Cry” slowed & chopped. Good times.

That story you had about discussing Prince after his death reminds me of a discussion I had with a French professor regarding the disbandment of Daft Punk, she loved them and their music, and she told us stories about living in Paris and seeing their impact on the French Club scene in the early 90s, it was nice to hear these stories from someone who was living in the heart of that scene during their.

31:10 both “When Doves Cry” and “Let’s Go Crazy” topped the Hot 100 (WDC was the #1 Billboard hit of the YEAR)

Long time Prince addict and overall your comments and thoughts on his albums reflect mine. I hope you had the chance to experience a live show, what he did in the studio was amazing, but what he did on stage was magic. And i did receive a threatening letter/email for sharing bootlegs. Great video, and huge effort very much appreciated.

i'm 16 with parents that were young in the 70s and 80s and had no idea how many of prince's songs i actually knew. haven't heard too many, just the most popular (purple rain, little red corvette, 1999 etc) but i like them all so i feel like i may end up checking him out, even if i don't scratch the surface i'll still listen to the songs i know and see what else i like. putting out 39 albums over almost 4 decades takes serious dedication, and i can't even imagine the amount of time and effort put into only this ddd discussing it all. bravo mic the snare, bravo prince! may he rest in peace

I was at karaoke with some friends when Prince passed away. The room was underground so we got no service, but I had picked Purple Rain, and we sang it, not knowing that he had died. When I came out of that basement, my phone vibrated and it was a message from my mum saying he had passed. It was a really sunny day, which felt unfair to me? I got home and blasted all the songs I grew up on. I was in mourning for a long time. I guess Prince was so important to me because he spoke to so many parts of me that I probably would not have been able to explore given my upbringing. The fact that he's still giving magic to the world even after death is nothing short of incredible.

@@isirlaughsalot2675 That's so disappointing if true. Especially because there's so much evidence out there that MJ is totally innocent. MJ's discography deserves the deep dive treatment. Off the Wall, Thriller, Bad and Dangerous are classic albums and even HIStory has so many great songs.

The "Graffiti Bridge" album was fire! I think people just hated on it because the movie was terrible

Graffiti Bridge slaps so hard, most of the songs credited just to Prince, the George Clinton duet and the three song stretch from Thieves in the Temple through to Melody Cool go so hard. The title track is very weak though and Tick Tick Bang is genuinely one of Prince’s weakest tracks he ever released during his original run on Warner Bros Records so it really isn’t perfect by any means. In fact, it’s about 7 tracks too long, it’s meant to be the sequel or Purple Rain, the perfect album and soundtrack album which was a tight 8 tracks, this shouldn’t have been longer than 10 or 11 max. Sleeper pick for best song on the record? The Latest Fashion. You can tell Prince thought highly of it too as it’s the only The Time song also credited to him on the tracklisting unlike the other three which are fairly mid, even though he wrote them all of course. So ridiculously catchy. GO MORRIS, GO MORRIS, GO MORRIS Movie is beyond awful though which does somewhat taint this “soundtrack” in original sin, it also doesn’t help that this kind of bombastic, sunny funk/R&B/new jack swing style of music would sound dated very quickly with the changing tides of music throughout the 90s.

For those who've never heard it, the great reissue label Numero Group released an excellent boxset a few years back called Purple Snow that documents the creation and evolution of the Minneapolis Sound and the entire scene that shaped Prince in the beginning. Well worth checking it out if you're into stellar if relatively unknown funk and R&B (plus it features some of Prince's earliest musical recordings to boot).

I had the pleasure of seeing Prince 4 times in concert over the years. The last time I saw him was in Detroit about a year before he passed. That show was as good or better than anything I saw prior. I first got into him during the Purple Rain era, then it was off to the races. I'm so glad to have had the chance to witness his greatness in person. Out of the 1000s of concerts I've seen, seeing Prince and seeing Michael Jackson on the Bad Tour are the ones I'm most grateful to have seen.

I’d be thrilled if you made a DDD for U2, it might help make younger generations like them again

Not to do Mic's job but their first 5 albums are classics IMO - Boy, October, War, Unforgettable Fire and Joshua Tree (my personal fav). Their 90s albums don't hit the same for me despite the excellent singles from that era, and I do appreciate how they expanded their sound. All That You Can't Leave Behind is my favorite later album - it became an unofficial / accidental 9/11 album and still resonates for me in that way, capturing grief and peaceful resilience (vs jingoism or revenge).

Prince is one of my twin brother's all-time favourite artists and he actually saw him on his piano tour a week before he died. I can't wait for him to watch this when he feels like doing so. I'm not too, too big of a fan but I do respect him IMMMENSELY as just a musician.

It took me three full days to watch this so I can't imagine how many days you spent on it. As someone who casually engaged with Prince's discography before, this deep dive was SO educational, even if there's only so much you can say about nearly 40 albums. As always, you present information so concisely, so hilariously, and so creatively.

Personal Top 3 Prince Albums: Crystal Ball Diamonds and Pearls Sign O’ The Times Crystal Ball holds a special place because it had Ripopgodazippa which was a song I’ve been on a decade long hunt for when I heard it in Showgirls (Don’t Ask) also, the title track, Acknowledge Me, Hide The Bone, Love Sign are absolute bangers for me! Rest in Purple Paradise Prince 💜💜💜💜💜

i have been watching this video periodically over the course of a week and a half and im still not done but i had to pause and watch the 2007 superbowl halftime performance and i was genuinely moved to tears

As a huge Prince/TAFKAP fan…… This is an excellent job. You faced one of the largest discographies in pop music and largely addressed each album with the attention it deserves (almost everything Post Emancipation is worth of “ehh it’s fine” once our boy transitioned to more of a competent craftsman over boundary breaking phase). (The Batman album is genuinely pretty great/underrated too)

Sign O' Times is a mind-blowing masterpiece. I grew up in the eighties and practically always worshipped the ground Prince walked on as a musician. He still has the strongest music catalog in all of popular music history. Some albums I agree were a little spotty but even those albums still had gems to be found. He will always be my favorite music artist of all time. My favorite Prince albums are Sign O' Times, Purple Rain, 1999, Around the World in A Day, Parade, Lovesexy, Dirty Mind, Diamonds and Pearls, Controversy, Love Symbol, Chaos and Disorder and Prince. Thanks for this excellent video of analysis of Prince's incredible output of music and albums when he was still living. Yes, Prince should still be with us making music.

I loved the inclusion of Prince’s tweets, he and George Michael had a similar “millionaire farting around on phone” energy I miss. Also, I’d be curious if there’s a playlist you have of songs like “Purple Rain” that just their existence and listening to them explains everything amazing iconic thing about each song?

Jesus. This one is massive and I thank you for it. Not only because I'm a huge Prince fan, but also because I can't even imagine how much work this took.

When you got to the Batman Soundtrack I was cheering and kicking my feet while twirling my head cuz that was literally my first introduction to Prince, not purple rain, not 1999, not any of his classics but my obsession with batman leading me into the surprise Prince was responsible for it's soundtrack, I even got a 2nd hand vinyl I got at a flea market lmaooo.

So glad you did this as Prince was one of my favs growing up and I love his discography, but I had to laugh when you compared his rapping to Flight of the Conchords. Prince was amazing but even geniuses can’t be great at EVERYTHING, lol!

Tal Wilkenfeld is super talented and it's unbelievable how many talented musicians she got to play with.

I think I was in a similar situation like you when I heard about Prince’s death, except I was in 5th or 6th and my school would have morning announcements through the tvs in each classroom and it would talk about current events and his death was one of them. I never really listened to him much before but after it I started to listen to his music and learn who he was and wasn’t until much later that I realized what an absolute loss we had of a legend and music virtuoso.

Have heard most of these. I got into him around late 2019 but i remember my sophomore year of high-school was when he passed. We sang "purple rain" in choir to tribute him and its probably one of the first real songs that affected me. I didnt get into the man's music until he passed but like you said there is something immortal about him.

Prince was the original alien superstar. He was a madman. A genius. A fashionista. A virtuoso. An icon. A genderbender. A visionary. And any other cliche term you could use to say he was the freaking GOAT. Ugh, God I miss that guy.

As a hardcore, I can unnecessarily nitpick but I’m not. This is an amazing deep dive for new and or casual fans. Great job and great work! 🎉

A few years ago I decided to check out a few of Princes songs and I immediately fell for him! This man was an absolute genius! Ever since that day Prince has been my favorite artist and at least in my opinion, nobody can compare to him. :)

With how far the series has gone lately, more extended remakes of the earlier episodes would be appreciated. Longer and updated Gorillaz and Oasis DDD videos (with the latter being complemented by the Bros' solo albums) whenever possible is what I'd really like to see someday, as those were the artists I've veen checking out quite in depth recently.

Idk, I felt the gorillaz one was pretty thorough relative to their popularity and overall musical impact. Mic was well into his longer vids when he did them, so I feel like he likely thought it sufficient. The artists that deserve a re-do are the ones that he did at the very beginning of the series that are only like 5 mins long tops

Firstly, can I just say: your relief in the outro cannot be touched. And that in itself is a testament to the dedication you have for us-which is in no way unappreciated, btw. Now for some thoughts: it breaks my heart to know that Prince was the same age my mom is now when he passed. It just reminds me how short life is and how crucial it is to go after the things we want most. And my GOD if Prince isn’t a testament to that! I’ll admit I’ve never been very familiar with him apart from his legacy and my mom often mentioning that he was one of her favorite artists in the 80’s. But I have soooo much respect for his integrity and dedication to owning his work, especially when the odds were so deeply stacked against him as a Black man. Also, your story of the day he passed reminds me so much of my memory of the day after the 2016 election. I had stayed up till 2am constantly checking the results and walked into my 9am class the next day beyond crushed and exhausted. And instead of discussing whichever educational psychologist we were studying, we used the class as a group therapy session to discuss the state of the world. Absolutely wild how these events can shape our identities. I could write a book on that, honestly! (As if I wasn’t writing one here lmao) Oh, and your mention towards the beginning of it being good to judge things by their covers had me cackling because as a librarian, I always judge books by their covers. I mean, cover designers literally exist to make people more likely to buy a book based on their snap decisions lol. I can only imagine the amount of market analysis that must go into the job. Anyway, thank you times a million again for yet another work of art! Even your “product placement” had just the right amount of earnestness to keep me grinning the whole time (and yeah, I absolutely wanna check them out now-ty for the rec!) I’m wishing you all the best after this insane journey. KZread may not give out gold medals, but you certainly deserve one for this. Having been born long after 1989 and batmania, knowing that prince did a batman album is the silliest and coolest thing ever. I bought the cd and vinyl. I wish WB re-released it cuz it goes for a pretty penny.

Would love to see you do a DDD on The Beach Boys! They have such a fascinating history (the story of Brian Wilson alone could make for a whole video by itself) and diverse discography. They're not mentioned as much as other groups like the Beatles when it comes to being influential, but I believe they definitely left their mark on music. Also--there's a great biopic about them called Love and Mercy, would recommend to anyone who likes the band or is interested in music production

No band as well has such a gap between their best and worst album 80’s beach boys is so bad compared to 60’s and some early 70’s stuff, though the reunion album from 2012 that’s why god made the radio is great

Let's go man. I love Prince, I was in my last year of middle school when he tragically passed. And a year later I visited Paisley Park. It was a phenomenal experience.

Hey i’ve kinda been on my own deep dive of his albums too. I’m on Emancipation , and like you, I think listening to it for 3 hours is a chore. That aside, this video is amazing. I have watched it so many times over the past week as a reference that it shows up every time in the “watch it again” section in my recommended. My favorite scenes were: “Anime Christian” “Gee I hope this album doesn’t hurt me” “Prince eats a grape” “And I need you and I am Batman” “Ooooooooouuuggh i did not like this movie’ “I can’t help but be a child from the ‘90s” “Some guy’s favorite thing is Come” (I actually LOVE come!) “Gosh gee willickers sufferin succotash “ Michael raving over Kamasutra “The way he says ‘baby’’ “ “Way to name a year after a prince song” “I can’t believe Prince did’t come out with this song” “Why do both of these women look like they are about to sell me ringtones?” “Congratulations!” “I don’t know, sue the internet?” Michael’s entire description of 20Ten (that album came oit literally two days before i was born.. so yeah) Every Prince tweet read out loud. Prince was a pop rebel. He was incredibly diverse in sound and subject matter and I've always thought the world of him but never really took the deep dive into his discography. I might do that now. I was in the car with my mom driving along the road, and I remember seeing the news on my phone and telling my mom that Prince passed away. She had to pull over, and frankly I don't blame her. There will never be another artist like him. Thank you so much for making this video.

As a HUGE Prince fan I have to say I am beyond impressed with how much you were able to squeeze into this, and how much you were able to get correct and was happy to see a lot of lesser known knowledge or info get shouted out that most people never get to hear... that being said, and I don't think this should be surprising with someone as massive as Prince, there's a fair amount that was either not included or additional context that would have made this that extra 10% better, but I'd give this a solid A grade either way. The thing with getting into Prince is that inevitably the longer you research him, the more you will uncover and the more LAYERS you will find, always causing you to re-think everything you think you already know.

Purple Rain the song definitely is a whole experience. Its insane how someone so young could create such incredible works of art and not art considered great in retrospect, but from the get-go. I enjoy Raspberry Beret a lot too its such a cute song and the production is so catchy and he has a song on his 2018 compilation called Chelsea Rodgers that is SUCH a jam. My favorite Prince song however is Little Red Corvette. It took me an embarrassingly long time for me to figure out he WASNT singing about the car but either way I would do my two step when it came on. Im so happy you did this though it took me forever to finish. Love all the hard work!
