Deebo fires back at Parsons, Cowboys vs. Lions, Is Purdy criticism valid? | NFL | FIRST THINGS FIRST

Спорт

San Francisco 49ers WR Deebo Samuel responded to Dallas Cowboys LB Micah Parsons’ criticisms of 49ers QB Brock Purdy. Nick Wright, Chris Broussard, and Kevin Wildes discuss if the criticisms are valid, and whether or not Purdy needs to have a massive game against the Washington Commanders. Plus, what a 3-game losing streak would mean for the Dallas Cowboys.

Nick: "I have an idea why the niners didn't throw the ball down the field." Me: ***pauses video*** "this idea won't include any mention of the Niners' mediocre offensive line, with the exception of their one world-class offensive lineman, their left tackle (the most key offensive line position there is) who was injured and left the field in that game. It might not even include any mention of the concept of pass protection or pass rush." Now let's unpause and see how my prediction bears out!

"The ad hominen attacks have come" k here's one: it's "ad hominem, not ad hominen." 🤣 Your suit in this segment wasn't to my taste, but usually I think you're very well-dressed, and quite dapper (you wore a grey three-piece recently and I remember thinking you were cutting a fine figure.) Your hair is fine. You have a lot of bad takes, though. Edit: and Holy Mary that shirt is bad.

Nick: "here's what Kyle Shanahan called" yeah, I watched that game, live (I usually just watch highlights on YT). At one point, the niners were down, but the game was still very much in play, and the cameras showed us a close-up of Shanahan's face. He looked like a long-tailed cat in a room full of rocking chairs. He looked like a Christian Scientist in a hospital. I think SHANAHAN broke in that game. Maybe before Purdy, maybe not. But weakness percolates down from the top.

Nick: "yeah this coach with one of the worst records playing from behind in the history of the league had really smart analysis while playing from behind in a game he lost." Plz defend this Nick, because it looks bad. I think Shanahan's game plan for this game was garbage. He should've played the run game HEAVIER than usual, from the start of the game until the end, not LIGHTER, as he did. I also think Purdy played badly. These two things can both be true. And I think they are. This thing where you hang everything on the QB and exonerate the coach with a horrendous playing-from-behind record is cringe. Edit: playing it back, I realize you were saying Parsons' analysis was smart, not Shanahan's. Mea culpa.

And their offense is babied down so he can have success. The great skill players the 49ers have is the only reason this babied down offense even works. Purdy's "3-game slump" at CLE - 12/27 (44.4%), 125 yards, 1 td, 1 int. Still drove them down the field and them in position to win the game in the end. Rookie kicker missed the GW FG. at MIN - 21/30 (70.0%), 272 yards, 1 td, 2 int. 49ers were driving down the field and had momentum with 6 minutes to go when Purdy gets a concussion. He would throw the first of two picks on the next play. vs CIN - 22/31 (71.0%), 365 yards, 1 td, 2 int. Within 1 score most of the game. The 49ers problems those 3 games weren't Purdy. Cousins and Burrow were carving the secondary up. The defense could not get off the field on 3rd downs in those last two games. The number of big plays given up and the penalties on the DBs were painful to watch. The OL didn't protect well at all.

You’re right having the QB throw 3 TDs with 6 turnovers isn’t a problem at all. As a matter of fact Brock Purdy played perfectly in those games. He clearly won some make a wish competition to be the starting QB and we can’t possibly criticize him no matter what. 4 picks in one game? Who cares. He’s such a nice guy. Looks like a boy playing a man’s game against the Browns Vikings and Bengals? No big deal, he’s a really nice guy. Btw compare this to the 49ers fan response to Trey Lance, wanting to run him out of town after 4 starts. Speaking of which Brock Purdy just had more picks in his last game than Trey Lance has in his entire career. But Brock Purdy is such a nice sweet guy so who really cares if he ruins a Super Bowl caliber team.

Nick didn't see the 49ers-Raiders game last year that ended in OT. Down 24-14 with 10:22 to go in the 3rd quarter. The exact scenario that was being discussed where he hasn't seen Purdy do it...and he did it. 14 for 23 for 247 yards with a pick from that moment on. 23 points after being put down 10 in the 3rd quarter to come back and win. Yeah, he didn't throw any of the two TD's they got in that stretch but those two TD drives, Purdy threw for 106 of the 150 yards they gained to score those TD's. If you're going to make the argument that the 49ers would somehow feel better about themselves if they went down to the Commanders on Sunday by 10 or more in the 2nd half and come back because of Purdy then that's already been done against what was a better Raiders team. In reality, this argument is disingenuous. Even if Purdy did exactly what Nick wants him to do, it'll be ignored like the Raiders comeback was ignored. The excuse will be that they shouldn't have been in that position in the first place (which would be true) and it wasn't against a good team (which is also true). But if all you're looking for is a comeback in the 2nd half, it's already been done in Purdy's short two season career.

It's like he's trying to convince himself the Niners aren't tough but why wouldn't you need to convince yourself of that unless, on some level, you thought the contrary was the truth? It's also kinda disrespectful to the game, the unwritten rules regarding who you are in the context of who beat you and who you beat. The Niners beat you. This is the problem with the "Dak is MVP" debate. It was always premised on Dak performing against quality competition at the end of the season when the schedule got tougher. That means beat Philly, Seattle, Buffalo, Miami, and Detroit, just like they were beating the tomato cans. They beat an imploding Eagles squad, escaped with a win against a Seahawks team ravaged by injuries on a losing streak, then got waxed by AFCE in embarrassing fashion. Dak was never the actual MVP. Talking-heads, like budget Hans Gruber, crowned Dak because they didn't want to give Purdy his flowers. They still don't want to acknowledge Purdy is in the MVP convo even with the 4 turnover game. A bad turnover game hasn't stopped other MVPs from getting the award. In 2018, Mahomes threw three picks-one returned for a TD-and lost two fumbles-again, one returned for a TD. It happened on Monday Night Football too. Both the Rams and Chiefs were 9-1, but the defenses were meh.

Somehow we forget this and hold Purdy to an unfair standard, but he is also a super young qb who has some growing pains to do. Writing him off every time he isnt stellar is wild, this is going to end up as Nick's worst take ever, even worse than Jokic, because now he is doubling down and saying Purdy is bad and its emboldened hin to dig his hole deeper. For Nick to be right at this point Purdy would have to be an all time fluke, cause the only other names on many lists he's on that Brou and others have shown regarding his numbers so far are elite all timers.

He set the record for most times sacked in the big game, L. You NEED pass protection to be able to throw the ball down field. It's a matter of positional DEPTH. The niners literally had to MOVE THE RIGHT TACKLE TO THE LEFT because they had no one else on the roster. I guarantee you that KC, Cincinnati, etc backup offensive linemen are better than the niners backups. It's their one true definitive positional weakness. It's why we value getting the ball out quick, running the ball, etc. Because we KNOW we can't protect Purdy long enough consistently to air it out like that. When you can't pass protect, you basically CANNOT throw deep. He got hit during throws that became INTs. Basically everyone looks like that when the pass rush is getting home and the secondary is covering like crazy. Nick fundamentally doesn't understand how this team is operated. KS calling deep passes on those plays would’ve gotten Purdy killed behind that line-I just don’t understand how nobody seems to understand that that immense amount of pressure by the Ravens Dline means you can’t just sit back and air it out on long developing pass plays

Lol stats you don’t like are misleading. Nick won’t tell you this one, mahomes has been bottom 5 in the nfl 2 years in a row in average depth of target. Aka he’s a screen and drag merchant

He says that Purdy can’t lead a comeback when he’s done it in Iowa state many times and had a great one against Oklahoma with Jalen Hurts. Small sample size so far in his short pro career to really say that.

4:26 Shanahan couldn't dial up deep pass plays when they were down late in the 3rd quarter because his offensive line was getting obliterated, so the last thing he'd want to do is have Purdy do deep drop-backs trying to go deep down field when the pass rush is getting to him almost every play. And they had lost Trent Williams early in the 3rd quarter, and had to move the right tackle in Trent's spot, and the right tackle was the one that got beat on the play that Trent got hurt on. That o-line fell apart at the seams so Purdy didn't have the time to go deep, so Shanahan couldn't call deep pass plays.
