Ms. Delia (Dee Dee) was my auntie, she taught me so many things that I have carried through life, my mother was Gloria E. Griffin, lead singer of The Roberta Martin Singers, and previuosly also of the Caravans, both Great Gospel Groups, she also sang with Aunt Dee Dee, and Whitney's Mom, and Ms.Judy Clay . I have always known Aunt Dee Dee as my Aunt, I grew up with Ms. Mahalia Jackson, and what ever child in the family was raised by All of the artist that were in our lives, I grew up in the family of All of the singers of this time. My father, and grand father are also Great minister's of that time. I am so happy to see her in this interview, she was a Great Lady, I miss her and Love her so much ! She was so loving and I remember how hard her brother's vehicle accident hurt her and their family when he passed. I will always remember her, and I am so grateful to her for the things that she taught me. I remember there was always music in her home. Thank You Aunt Dee Dee, You Are Loved. I Will Always Love You ! She would Never Hurt Anyone ! ! !

The devil got to her through her brother, I don’t know what strength she found to continue life. It killed her. The song that she dedicated to Mancel was published only in 2001! Record company bosses punished her for being herself.

Hello ' she listened to Gospel, Jazz, R&B , All music but these women and men all could really sing, they were playing music, singing and writing music, I even wrote a song in her home, but there were artist playing the piano, and other instruments. they were talking about the Bible, music, the music industry, and talking about life at that time. there was always music.

Yes, I think she was underrated during her lifetime. But now many people have learned about Dee Dee's music and listen to it with pleasure, like me. She was nominated twice for a Grammy with 'Foolish Fool' and 'She Didn't Know (She Kept on Talking)', but Aretha won both times. In 1999 Dee Dee received PIONEER AWARD FROM THE RHYTHM AND BLUES FOUNDATION. In 2022, Dee Dee was nominated for NATIONAL RHYTHM & BLUES HALL OF FAME. She finished in 4th place, 6-8 nominees will be presented for the award. So I think Dee Dee will get another award this summer!!!

Its so amazing how she mentions her mother was talented in singing classical voice. It can be assumed she taught Cissy to sing with such operatic techniques. And for Julliard to offer Ms. Warrick a scholarship she had to be extremely talented. This family had so much to teach the world about singing.

She seems like a lovely lady. One can't help but wonder about the obvious - living in the shadow of a much more famous & successful sister. I saw on another video that Dee Dee battled addiction, which ultimately led to her demise at a fairly young age. It's not uncommon for people within that industry to fall into addictions, of course. It's a business that, if you're extremely lucky, can be very rewarding. At the same time, it can be very cruel and devouring of one's self worth.

Dee Dee didn't do drugs, those were rumors. In fact, she was diabetic, so she had to inject insulin. She only had problems with alcohol until 1977. This fame for Dionne and the blockade for Dee Dee (she was openly gay) was from the bosses and producers of the music industry: record companies, television and radio. Dee Dee could perform naked while juggling with working chainsaws, but no one would know about it ...

If we didn't have the video, at the outset, just listening to the audio I would have bet money it was Dionne speaking - both have such beautifully nuanced speaking voices - always almost musically modulated, comfortably paced, very gentle, graceful demeanor - which is not to overlook that they are both spirited, independent women - often laced with that good-natured sense of humor and charming laugh; could listen to Ms. Dee Dee and/or Ms. Dionne talk all day, makes me wish we could hear her mom's voice to know if that manner of speaking was a family trait - and really would have loved hearing Dee Dee and Dione being interviewed together - I'm sure losing Dee Dee was awfully hard for Dionne. thx for this wonderful video! :-)

Dee Dee was 63 years old in 2005. She did not use cosmetics in everyday life. Although she smoked a lot, she was an avid swimmer when she lived in New York. Her skin is not perfect. Dee Dee suffered from acne since childhood because she had congenital diabetes. I think that daily cosmetics are very aging and dry women's skin.

@@dominicjones4773 Exactly. Alfie by Dee Dee Warwick is simply a masterpiece!!! I know it was her favorite song that was stolen from her. But now many things are falling into place and Dee Dee will be known, honored and loved. Be sure to check out her official website, I have an exclusive song! At the end of the year there will be an award ceremony "National Rhythm & Blues Hall Of Fame 2022" where people voted, Dee Dee was in 4th place after Roberta Flack. So she should get this award! You know, I accidentally found out today that the deedeewarwick.com domain had a different owner in early 2000, I think that the domain belonged to Dee Dee. She wanted to make a website to let people know about her and her music, but that didn't work out. I bought this domain for $9 in January 2021 and built the site myself (I'm a freelance content manager). Remember what Dee Dee said at the Pioneer Award from The Rhythm And Blues Foundation (1999): “I promise I’ll see better days.” Believe it or not, Dee Dee and I are in touch. I ask her questions and get answers. For example, I asked her if she had a dog and a week later I find a newspaper article about her Pomeranian named “Cruz” for a constant companion. And the last dream was just amazing. My bedroom window is always open. I see a dream where everything is white and in the center is a woman with white hair (non-gray) and white skin. Her eyes were very kind and mischievous. She told me "Boo" and I woke up and realized that the room was very cold and I could get sick. I did not understand who this woman was. But if I replace the white skin and hair with black, then it was definitely Dee Dee. My conclusions that she became an angel! Only selected people with a pure soul become an angel.

Royal family of music! 👑 Hard to know what happened in regard to all the allegations flying around, but everyone involved is gone now so it does no good to argue about it. Unaddressed family trauma just gets passed down, whether in the form of verbal, physical, sexual or spiritual abuse. All we know for sure is that Whitney & Bobbi Christina were wracked with pain & passed prematurely. This lady also looks weary as if she's been through a lot. The reason why is anyone's guess. The music business itself is notorious for claiming lives.

Pat Garland needed to get tabloid attention for her fanfiction at all costs. Since other documentaries have already been released. Gary is very homophobic and racist, he took this from John Houston. Gary and Pat needed to "explain" Whitney's behavior, drugs, and relationship with Robyn. If you watched this interview carefully, for example, when Dee Dee talks about her mother she calling her beautiful, when she talks about Whitney, she highlights her ability to earn money, there is no sexualization here. Exactly 2 months before this interview, her mother passed away, which is why she was so tired, I guess. It happened in Las Vegas, possibly related to Dionne. Dee Dee had knee problems due to arthritis. Background vocals from 1961 to 1965, demos for other singers, she practically lived in the studio, 10-12 hours a day. Vocals are recorded while standing, plus concerts, which subsequently affected her health. She had surgery on both knees. And of course, congenital diabetes greatly affected. It was necessary to monitor nutrition, daily routine, emotional sphere, pressure, not skip insulin intake, etc. I think if Dee Dee didn't have diabetes, she would have achieved more. I have a disease of the thyroid gland (also the endocrine system), sometimes it is very difficult for me, I have no strength, weakness, food allergies, my whole body hurts. I think Dee Dee experienced something similar. The disease is very debilitating. Dee Dee fought the industry and I think she won because she didn't change herself. When her songs stopped being published (these 12 songs were released in 1995) she stopped recording solo and continued to work for her sister and the Spinners. In 1977, her father died of a heart attack and she left. But in 1983, Dee Dee recorded 2 albums in 4 days, acting as a co-producer. She was again invited to tours, for example, Germany in 1984, along with Dee Dee Sharp, sang for the US military. Dionne is afraid of so many things, especially obstruction from people, she always needs approval. She often pretends that she is interested in people, she knows how to manipulate, especially men ) Therefore, having written this toothless statement, Dionne, Cissy and Michael did not convince anyone, but only left many questions. What kind of 'personal problems' did Dee Dee have, that Cissy writes about, being openly gay or with the music industry, which always favored Dionne because she was heavily promoted and her name made money. Dee Dee did not know that she would receive her most monstrous hit after the transition. And she can't defend herself. So I will do it and other people too. Because Dee Dee was a pure soul and a huge heart, a forgiving and wise person, just listen to her music and there will be no questions left: That's Not Love, Don't Pay Them No Mind, Turn Around And Love You.

When Dee Dee started singing in 1961, the industry wasn't so evil. I can remember the story with Berry Gordy and Tammy Montgomery (Tammi Terrell). And also Berry Gordy and Mary Wells, when she left Motown, he tried to ruin her career. Dee Dee, by the way, sang with her too, Love Songs To The Beatles, and Ain't It The Truth, Stop Takin' Me For Granted and others. And Clive Davis (Devil), who was picked up by Aretha and her whole family and she died of cancer. Clive is also the death of Janis Joplin, Phyllis Hyman, the girl from TLC and Whitney. He has $800 million and the dead face (Bell's palsy). Bad people live long...

Awesome awesome interview. In the 60s when Dionne was riding high my youngest aunt in NY loved Dionne and here I was going on 10 at the time my aunt spoke how Dionne has her sister open for her at her shows. In comes 1968 and my mom came back from visiting my very sick grandmother and brought home 45s she bought in the city. One of them was Foolish Fool by Dee Dee Warwick. That was the song and I finally got to hear how Dee Dee sounded. I was 12 then and to this day I still love that song. She should’ve gotten the Grammy but Aretha Franklin had all those bases covered as the Queen of Soul. And might I speak of her voice. She and Cissy sound so much alike.

"Turning Around" is one of the greatest soul albums of all time and should have been stratospheric. Shows that good music doesn't always become canonised in the way that mediocre music often does. Dee Dee is one of the most distinctive and charismatic voices in black American music, with very few of her peers even coming close.

I absolutely agree with you! Dee Dee's vocals and sound from The Dixie Flyers were way ahead of their time. I would even say that Dee Dee Warrick had his own planet. Starting with "You're not good." she was always strong, with pressure, but sensual and emotional. Although Dee Dee said in an interview (I have not published it on the site yet, I am in the process of creating a new website for Dee Dee. But since I am from Russia, I had financial problems, everything is ok now), that the musicians started playing for her" like for Aretha" (they were used for her) and she stopped the session and said "I'm not Aretha Franklin. When you can play for me I'll be back' And eventually we all got it together." The problem with Dee Dee's music is that it's not well known. But she won last year an award - National Rhythm & Blues Hall Of Fame (2022). And you and I listen to Dee Dee's music, talk about it, write about it and recommend it, and other people will come!

It was a common practice with the older gospel singers to adopt children that weren’t living well. Mother Sallie Martin adopted Cora, Mother Willie Mae Ford-Smith adopted the young woman that played piano for her, Mahalia Jackson adopted Bro. John Sellers, and so on. So Miss Lee Warrick adopting Judy was part of the gospel music culture in those golden years.

The sections where they showed her singing really stuck with me but something about the allegations just seemed very opportunistic and false, especially seeing what Pat can get up to. That demo record that got put on Jubilee was "You're No Good" (Clint Ballard), also by Betty Everett and Linda Ronstadt. It is my favorite version and the b-side is also co-written by Ballard and is another killer thanks to Dee Dee and arranger, Garry Sherman. Probably some other real gems on those demo recordings that could have been fleshed out by Sherman, Bert Keyes, etc.. I think to an extent, when Motown found their signature sound, it derailed very high quality things happening in the early sixties (great songwriters, big voices, interesting arrangements).

Dionne won't sue Gary and Pat as she doesn't like scandals, doesn't want to feed the tabloids and hurt Cissy's health. In response to this "fanfiction", they released a statement signed by Dionne, Cissy and Michael. In this statement, they expressed their horror at these accusations and fully supported Dee Dee and her good name. The fact that Michael and Robyn, who were Whitney's closest people, said it was a lie, could be put to rest. But the tabloids and the emotional, naive and abused Whitney's fans believed Gary and Pat because "the victim is always right." But what evidence, besides the allegations of Gary, Pat and Mary, have we heard. Gary did not even give his exact age, time, place when it supposedly happened to him. Because Dee Dee didn't see the light of day from 1961 to 1965, recording numerous background vocal sessions (over 400 songs). From 1965 to 1977 Dee Dee recorded solo, plus touring, background vocals for Dionne and the Spinners. Yes, theoretically anything could have happened, but proving guilt is the responsibility of the prosecution. And no accusations were made against Dee Dee by Gary, Pat or Mary. But after this scandal, Gary was seen near the drug dealer's house, high and unconscious. Trust facts, not emotions!!! Is the molester interested in children of both sexes (Gary and Whitney)? All cases that I have heard are either boys or girls.

I understand what you mean. It's not about looks. Dee Dee was modest, she kept her thoughts to herself. But when it came to her music, she was demanding. I did not find a single bad word about her from colleagues. She was professional and kept her end of the bargain, but vice versa... In her life she wore no makeup, pants, shirts and caps (I'm not the only one). Dee Dee valued her personal space. She thought a lot about the past, especially in recent years. I see her sitting, smoking and looking out the window, reliving moments of the past that should have been done differently. People react like crows to shiny things, but they turn out to be not gold, but glass. I don't know what mental strength you need to have to endure all the blows, set-ups and betrayals that she experienced. She forgave Dionne many times, although this caused her to have problems with alcohol. But Dee Dee survived, her personality, life principles did not change. Dee Dee Warwick is a charming and sometimes awkward dork, I adore her...

Dee Dee arranged for the visit to occur at her parent's home in East Orange, New Jersey. Dionne and Bill were visiting for Christmas along with their infant son David and Dionne's mom was out with David doing some Christmas shopping. The Warrick home in East Orange was a quaint two-storey Colonial tastefully decorated with beautiful antiques. On her best behavior, Dee Dee was serving tea in the dining room to the reporter and they were chit-chatting when there was a thunderous slam upstairs and Dionne began screaming at Bill. Doors were slamming, things were breaking, epithets of the most base nature were flying (Dionne is known to favor the f-word) and Dionne and Bill brought their verbal shouting match downstairs. Dee Dee apologized to the reporter and went into the kitchen to settle things down between Dionne and Bill, who were still screaming at each other. She got them settled down enough and told Dionne that the interview was going on and asked Dionne why she was always trying to grab attention away from her. Dionne, apparently shamed, shut up and Dee Dee went back to the interview. The quiet lasted only a few minutes though. Soon Bill and Dionne were hurling insults at each other again. Dee Dee slammed her fists down on the table, apologized to the reporter and remarked that those two "epithet deleted" were going to tear the house down and needed to get the hell away from each other for good When the shouting match between Bill and Dionne continued, Dee Dee escorted the reporter out of the house, apologizing profusely for the base behavior of her elegant and refined sister and brother-in-law and arranged to continue the interview away from the Warrick home. Unfortunately for Dee Dee, the interview was never completed. Dee Dee always felt that Dionne was trying to steal the limelight away from her… although they loved each other very much." What if Dee Dee would've taken Mr. Gordy's offer maybe they would have teamed her up with Marvin Gaye as his duet partner and she'd join the Motown Revues with The Temptations with a some hits like Gladys Knight. Money or Fame?

I think Whitney's brother accused Dee Dee because she was-in his eyes-an easy target. She couldn't defend herself (already passed) and she was a lesbian. And if you've seen interviews by any of the family members, their views on homosexuality are very homophobic.

Dee Dee has never been crazy. Whitney meant creative madness, Dee Dee could say NO to the producers or musicians of her album. Robyn wrote this in her book and people literally thought about mental health problems. No, it's not. Dee Dee was a sane person, more so than the others.

There was the time Nippy watched her onstage singing background for Dionne, visibly bored-huffing, puffing, and rolling her eyes. Contrary to what has been said, Whitney loved Dee Dee. She spoke fondly of her cousin and maintained close ties to the Warwick family even after she became famous." It was in the book by Robyn Crawford ) People literally began to think about Dee Dee's mental health, although here are talking about creativity and career. Dee Dee's record company, after the release of the successful album Turnin' Around (1970), did not publish her new songs, there was an entire album ready. Therefore, Dee Dee was offended and refused to record solo. She wanted these songs to see the light, because there was a song about her brother who died in a car accident (Pookie). But it didn't happen... These songs were published in 2001 only. Whitney, when she said these things to Robyn, did not understand what was happening with Dee Dee or concealed it.
