I'm having a flowerbed put around and behind my mailbox. I got my yellow marking today. How can I tell how deep lines are? There is a symbol in the gutter and a line on either side of my 25 year old mailbox post (cemented in place).

No offense, but utility markings are an unreasonable pet peeve of mine. I get why they’re vital before install, but it looks so awful in the streets and on sidewalks. Is there an ‘invisible’ option? And what is the timeline where most of these paints fade away?

I agree, the markings look terrible, but a little visual discomfort is a small price to pay for the safety of the workers and the general public. There isn't a stand alone invisible option. Some utilities are paired with detectable tape. The buried tape can be detected by a metal detector, but marking paint is still used to mark the surface. It's just a more accurate way of marking buried utilities. Most marking paints will last 3 month in normal conditions. Thanks for commenting Benjamin.
