I am natural from birth. I've always had long thick hair. I am 50yrs old. I've had a plethora of set backs. I wish I had learned mature hair styles. The only one I learned was press and curl 3 to 4x a yr if I was lucky. Once the curls dropped all I knew was to put it in a ponytail. I also wish I had learned more of the mechanics around hair. I had the basics wash condition treatment an then braid up for school grease and water, I hated the smell of the grease my mom used and I was severely tender headed so at 10 I started doing my own hair.. I had to split my hair in two to fit the kitchen tub sink. I wish I knew about shrinkage, shedding, the growth cycle and other things.

I wish I knew that just because a product is expensive, makes bold claims, and is hyped up on social media does not mean it will work for my hair. Also, natural haircare does not have to be super expensive and exhausting. Some of the cheapest products and simplest routines work wonders for my hair.

I love going to family dollars for the cheap stuff then buying one or two $12 and down oils that last 4 months or more and I put a little oil inside everything. That and a lil dab of grease to lock it in. Does ✨wonders ✨

Wish I knew that simple is best. I had beautiful hair as a child, so my Mom had it about 85% right. Just had to find and correct the flaws in her system so that I could thrive again. Proper scalp care and hair detangling were the only parts that needed to be fixed. THANKS MOM FOR THE EXCELLENT FOUNDATION ONCE AGAIN!

Girl everything you said is right on point!❤ I wish I knew to put my hair in mini twist and leave her alone. Less manipulation = length retention. It’s so many ways you can style your hair in mini twist, you can moisturize in mini twist. It was a game changer for me.

I’ve been natural since 2011. I wish I knew that washing my hair more often and focusing on my hair being moisturized was key! I was get really frustrated with my hair bc it would be dry and unmanageable. I never knew just putting water in it and making sure it didn’t dry out would make my life so much easier. I love my hair and how squishy and fluffy it feels when I moisturize it properly!!!

Honestly I feel a way that the majority of stylists I go to actually do not like doing natural hair. I wanted and still want a stylist to help me but know it’s time for me to master my hair. From it’s natural state, protective styles and silk presses. It’s time. My hair definitely grows because I had locs and it grew like crazy.

I really wish I knew about more about listening to my hair, moisturizing and understanding the need for moisture/protein balance before I’d become more intentional about my hair care. Listening to you and others along with experimenting with various products to find which ones works has changed my whole perspective. I had no idea how much I really didn’t know. So glad that’s changed.

Learning to treat the scalp like a garden. A few years before coming in contact with curlychemistry, i was praying about my hair when Gid gave me understanding about gardening. Now, i switch out my products in September to a hydrating/moisturing combo. The PMP method helped me to better comprehend the LCO/LOC methods for the drier months of the year. Thank you curly chemistry for all you do. The oil rinse during the winter months has made a difference.

I wish that I knew getting regular trims was the key to length retention. I was a hair hoarder and did not want to get a trim and would sometimes even go a whole year without getting a trim only to be disappointed when I had to take all the dead ends off. I got better, but last year was when I really decided to stick to a regimen. I trim faithfully every 3 months and I can already see the difference. Not only is my hair thicker, but I am retaining length for the first time in years.

I just focus on keeping it healthy and yes low manipulation is the one thing can ruin our growth and I wish I knew it before I am battling mechanical damage even though I have always rock my curls I used to use a very tight 5 days of the week and now that I'm in my forties I'm paying the consequences. So now I am everyday embracing my curls loose buns and wash n goes and love it! Our hair is one of the most beautiful things we have we just have to believe it🎉❤ love to all my curlies : )

Good episode, Tonya, much needed. I have been natural since 2014 and I have no regrets. My hair is extremely dense and it grows. You're right, it's simple: don't compare your hair to others, wash with a good moisturizing shampoo, clean the scalp, get in those vinegar rinses, and practice more low-manipulation hairstyles than not. I like the headband wig that you're wearing. Can you share the purchasing info for that particular headband? I am about to get 18 inches of length cut off, and that's a nice band to wear on those days when I want to feel the length. Thank you.

I haven't really been consistent with shampooing & conditioning, cause my scalp is sensitive & tend to get dandruff easily(since I was in my teens). I've made hair oil already, next up though is shampoos & conditioner, also some of the rinses you mentioned.

I have had natural curly hair for over 25 years down to my waist. The scalp is important. I use Dr. Bronners Tea tree soap (diluted) 1x per month to clean & clarify my scalp. i have really thick hair, I use a bottle with a long spout like the ones they use to dye hair to reach my scalp. I keeps my scalp flake free. I see people use a ton of product, layers upon layers of product and it really weighs down your hair. Also, a lot of if it is redundant and just marketing. Clean scalp, deep conditioning, don't manipulate you hair too much (leave her alone!), I only comb my hair 1x per week and that's it. Also, a little frizz is okay. you don't have to put product on your hair every single day...I use aloe vera as my spritz water. It does take a while to figure out what works for you, there is a lot of trial and error, but once you do, just stick to it. I say if you are using more than 2 products aside from Shampoo and Conditioner, you are likely doing too much. Less is more.

Hey! I would focus on low-maintenance protective styles and moisture. If you're ready, I would recommend signing up for a hair care coaching call with me and we can create a plan to help you tackle your hair challenges and reach your hair care goals a lot sooner. Here's the link to sign up: curlychemistry.com/work-with-me/ :-)

Agreed. I kind of bothers me a lot actually when people ask how long I’ve been natural. Like what exactly are they asking? Not all of us grew up with relaxer in our hair

💫✨ Wish I knew early on not to take hair care advice at face value from everybody ; i.e., 10vids/10 diff naturals and if each had 2 things in their regimen, I’d try to incorporate 20 things - - hydrogen peroxide + relaxed + baking soda + high heat blown ends and shampoo 🧴 every 2 days, kinda foolery. Research! 🔬 Research! 🔬 Research! 🔬 is so important . . . Ask questions, search for solutions and based on YOUR healthy scalp & healthy hair needs/concerns & preferences : be content with your hair and never, ever, ever entertain the notion of having someone else’s unique hair bcuz then you settle for just being a duplicate and forfeit the beauty of enjoying being one and only YOU! 💫✨

Hi Tanya and friends! Thank you for sharing!! I wished I knew my hair porosity, even when I had relaxed hair. 🫣 I was never on the trendy wave. I kept using grease and EVERYTHING! I wasn’t gonna give up having my husband stop greasing my scalp…. In the words of Mya from girlfriends…. Oh helllllll no🤭
