The past year has seen a crazy fluctuation in decking material costs which is too much to keep up on with my spreadsheet. My recommendation is to use the link above that will take you to a deck cost calculator with Trex and combine that with my Google sheet to estimate your project. Not perfect but much better at predicting costs month to month.

Dude, what a great video. Total master class for newbs. I went w/ Trex Enhanced naturals for a 80 ft boardwalk and a 600 sq ft deck. It was on sale at HD for only $3 more per board for 12 ft lengths. Says more about the redonk lumber prices than the Trex cost, IMO. Anyway, it looks amazing and I'll never have to treat it!! I will also add that prepare to get frustrated with Trex hardware, their screws are cheaply made and strip out with star bits constantly. I ended up buying Timbertech screws and CAMO starting clips.

When you buy decking it's not linear footage, you simply multiply the width of the board by the length. A 16 ft Trex board at 5.5" is 16 X (5.5/12) .458 = 7.328 and there's your sq footage :)

First - great helpful video and worksheet. QUESTION - within your spreadsheet I found that the price for Fiberon Goodlife deck boards are roughly 1/2 the price of Fiberon Concordia Symmetry deck boards. These are two products that we are considering for our project of adding a landing and stairs to a pre-existing 10 year old Fiberon Horizon Rosewood deck. In your research did you find much difference between the quality of the Fiberon Goodlife deck boards and the Fiberon Concordia Symmetry deck boards beyond the length of the warranty?

If you’re looking composite I think Fiberon, TimberTech and Trex are your way to go. Then it just depends on budget. If you grabbed the cheat sheet filter it by composite and then price per linear foot. That should help narrow your thoughts.

regarding getting a price estimate for a deck, it's like going to a doctor and asking for the cost of a particular surgery. Prices vary on items that aren't discussed. My example, every area, every city will have it's cost of living multiplier. Of course, then you have supply and demand of the season for labor and materials. Professional contractor or UbuildIt Uself? Substructure: what quality wood are you using, inexpensive or Grade 1. How high are you off the ground, are you attaching to a house or building free standing? Will you have steps leading to the ground, what kind of soil do you have for footers? Do you have ventilation around-thru the deck or building in the woods covered by trees (hence debris all the time, the deck's structure could always be damp). Do you want a simple decking pattern, or a herringbone-diagonal that requires more joists than other decking. Even the quality of the decking may demand the joists are closer together. Will your pressure treated substructure be wrapped for that completed look? Oh, what type of railing do you want (metal, composite, combination) and how high will your railing be. Lighted or not, what colors as there are basic costs and special colors cost more. I could go on, and I am just an amatheur who want a solid, well built deck. Any price for the same size could vary by over 100% if your Uncle Bob who knows which end of the hammer to use. Plus, no-one uses hammers any more.

The width explanation isn't correct however. None of them with achieve 6" width with the clip space. The 6" comes from the lumber industry. A rough sawn 5/4"x6" is dressed down to a 1"x5.5" dimension. Most clip spacers are 3/16" to 1/4"...add that to the board width...5.25-5.5" for your calculations.

Your explanation of solid edge boards is also quite inaccurate. The solid edge profiles are to be used for visible area like picture frames and stairs, and for a stronger edge for the stair nosing. Butting the boards together will absolutely NOT create a dry space below a high deck. Wood shrinks and expands with its moisture content. Even if you install hydraulically tight...it will shrink and leave a space. The only way to give dry space below your deck is to use a water management system of some sort. Installing the boards tight will absolutely not do this alone.

The best YT overview on decks yet! Also a nice tutorial on Google Sheets. :D Going to enter a new $ value for substructure, since the price of lumber now is through the stratosphere. Suffice to say $15 per sq ft on substructure today vs $5 in 2020? Also need to factor in the type of footings required - standard vs caissons. Any calculation you suggest for those?
