Deciphering the language of emotion | John Koenig | TEDxEMWS
We are all moving on our separate paths in this world, yet secretly orbiting the same thing. The challenge is how do we look past that and find a way to see our own humanity. In this abstract talk, amongst the various other words he's created to fill the language of emotion, John Koenig, the founder of the Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, teaches us how to overcome this challenge by describing the concept of his favourite creation thus far 'Sonder'.
John has spent the last decade building a home in every creative field he can find, working as a graphic designer, video editor, voice actor, illustrator, photographer, director, and writer. He has spent the last six years writing an original dictionary of made-up words, The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows, which fills gaps in the language with hundreds of new terms for emotions, one of which (Sonder) has now entered the language outright.
This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at ted.com/tedx

This wonderful quote comes to mind: " All I know is what I have words for." Wittgenstein
So happy to finally see the genius behind the word "Sonder". He gave the word that captured the mixed sadness, humility and wonder I felt whenever I am in an airport terminal seeing all those people passing by oblivious of my own existence. Thank you Sir !
This needs lot more attention.
Gosh... I wish I could just sit and talk to and listen to him forever and just soak up everything he says

I get you`re point, he`s talking mostly about, Emotionally connecting words to obscure feelings. I can`t speak for other peoples around the world but, here, we need pictures, movies, music and writings, where we can have a media that helps us to access those obscure emotions, or at least I do.
I would really like to talk to this person...the way he thinks is beautiful. I myself think of many weird things..and he gave words to many of them. I really look up to him.

Agreed! It's like he's able to enter my mind.
Onism is an emotion I feel, not only for the places I won't see but the things I won't do. I only have one life.
This is... immensely beautiful. Thank you so much :)
There are so many similarities between some of the human endeavours, like the definition of words and the definition of mathematical objects. We build our way up to be able to see more.
despite what seemed to be a tempered reception, he stuck to his narrative and managed to navigate a harsh environment to finish making his point. as for any comments on presentation, he's nothing less than living proof of his point. never stop searching for a way to share your view of an orderly universe, even if it includes adding to the dictionary..
i struggle with sonder everyday… i’ve felt it all my life but i’ve recently learned and currently understanding it.
"So you can only imagine how much we're missing because we don't have very many shades of the blues." Not sure if I'm assigning a meaning to this he did not intend, but I thought that this was, in a way, poignant.

I think it's open to interpretation, but I felt the same way.
Koenig's genius manifests in his prodigious ability to heal one's very immanent condition : loneliness
Nice talk! loved it!
Awed by all 28 of his videos... artistic photos that exemplifies every line.
love this guy
Love this dictionary~
Kudos for memorizing the whole thing...
Can you imagine, instead of " Hi how are you, saying " What`s you`re story can you imagine the looks you would get and the response you would get, like, what, what did you say ?
I have conquered onism. I have tapped into the ability to be anyone at anytime by tuning my resonance to their frequency. I can assume all of their memories and even see the trajectory of their lives just as each of the trillions of cells that you are made up of have their own unique specific function… I feel like I need to be interviewed…
Those are some deep words.
The speaker more specifically said that the words he created is intended to "fill THE HOLES left in the language of emotion."
Why cant i give this a second like?
Distinctions! That is one form of the human progress.
he's a brave astronaut of sorts in my opinion.
4:23 quick question: How many shades of blue are there?
i can hear him speak for hours
I'm still wondering when the book will be published
