Deciphering Depression: The Role of Serotonin (The Social Brain ep 37)

Ғылым және технология

The dramatic increase in depression diagnoses has led millions to use antidepressants, based on the theory that a chemical imbalance in the brain is to blame. However, recent studies suggest the cause of depression is more complex, challenging the simplicity of this theory. While antidepressants are crucial for many, viewing depression solely as a chemical issue oversimplifies the diverse factors at play, including environmental and personal experiences. This calls for a broader, more nuanced understanding of depression that appreciates the complexity of mental health beyond just biology.

Hi, your conversation was interesting. A lot of ppl 20years ago said depression is caused by your miserable thought pattern and it was hurtful to hear. I was waisting a lot of time for taking counseling session, but around 2005 when Japan started to sell Sertraline and I changed the medicine from Paxil to Zoloft (sertraline) then I realized what I needed wasn’t a therapeutic talking it was just about chemical imbalance. I guess a lot of ppl now know about depression is caused by a chemical imbalance is a good thing (at least for me) but there r many kinds of depression (including ppl depressed by the terrible life event), since we r all diagnosed by the interview instead of using any biomarker, doctors do not know what kind of therapy or meds fix which patients. I hope we can find something better to diagnose mental illnesses while I’m living.

Hello thanks for your new ideas but what explanations do you have about shrinkage of hypocampus, prefrontal lobes, increasing the size of amygdala, and shrinkage of lambic systems, and the study that shows that cortisol level that related to stress will ruined the hypocampal cells and lymbic systems,

Serotonin loss is not the cause of my depression. What Seratonin drugs do to me is cause me to become like Mr. Spoke. No emotions at all. If that's what suppose to happen then I want no part of that!!

That kind of emotional blunting is really common with SSRIs, at least anecdotally.

ssris will help you preserve brain function into older age via upregulating neurogenesis + the emotional blunting is placebo bs and will probably go away
