You may kindly note that at the time the Deccan traps were forming, another small but interesting geological formation was created about 400 Km south. That was the coconut islands, St. Mary's Island or the Tonsepar islands. These islands are located near the town of Udupi in the coastal Karnataka. They are about eight Km from the mainland. However, they were formed by the same geological phenomenon as the Deccan traps. The island is made up of Basalt rock, which is a basic igneous rock, unlike the mainland nearby, which is made of acidic Granite and Gniss. The island features columnar formations and is one of 34 National geographical monuments of India. This is the only place in India, where you have the columnar rhyolitic geological feature.

Pl do animation on EASTERN GHATS FORMATION PL

The eastern ghats formation unlike Himalayas or western ghats is very complex and it is spread over a very long duration and with unrelated events. The formation of eastern ghats is studied in very small regions because each of it had a different mechanism. These are things of higher studies and not part of upsc related geography. Hence my focus currently is to focus on important things
