Recorded live in concert presented by the LA Phil at Walt Disney Concert Hall on November 6th, 2019
This poem written by French poet Paul Verlaine in 1869 served as inspiration for Claude Debussy's most famous work from his "Suite bergamasque".
Your soul is a select landscape
Where charming masqueraders and bergamaskers go
Playing the lute and dancing and almost
Sad beneath their fantastic disguises.
All sing in a minor key
Of victorious love and the opportune life,
They do not seem to believe in their happiness
And their song mingles with the moonlight,
With the still moonlight, sad and beautiful,
That sets the birds dreaming in the trees
And the fountains sobbing in ecstasy,
The tall slender fountains among marble statues.
- Paul Verlaine, 1869
_______________________________________
- Paul Verlaine, 1869

and props to the audience who didn't start clapping right away but did hold the tension until ray and julio released it. This are the moments I always look for - those seconds right after a breathtaking performance where the tension is still physically in the air, the sound still silently vibrating and everyone holding their breath.. SO SO glad that not one person broke the spell.

Someone clapping AFTER a piece is done isn't inconsiderate. YOU just want that extra couple seconds of silence. You don't dictate concert etiquette for what not to do after a piece is done lol. Coughing/ sneezing during the performance, cell phones not turned off, people clapping before the piece is over is inconsiderate.

I was in this concert!! They did 4 encores and after the concert they hugged, took selfies, and signed Ray's CD for everyone who was in line. I’ve just bought tickets to his concert in Brisbane next year in August! And I’m sitting in the front row right in front of him and I’m literally so excited. Ray Chen is the person that changed my life. He inspired me so much and would be where I am today if it wasn’t for him. I probably wouldn’t be playing violin, I wouldn’t be perusing music. Music is my entire life, I don’t know where I would be if it wasn’t for Ray Chen so there’s almost no chance he will see this but if he does: Ray Chen, thank you so much for changing my entire world!

i usually prefer the piano-only arrangement of clair de lune because i always felt that having another instrument play the melody was not fitting, but this. this. this is incredible. ray’s interpretation and musicality is perfect-impossible to match. julio plays with such fluidity and gentleness. it all comes together so beautifully. this performance brought several tears to my eyes, which i was not expecting. ray and julio sound amazing together!

This looks like the recent recital at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto last Friday, November 8. All the works featured the violin and piano, except for the famous Chaconne of Bach, for solo violin, which was the first work after intermission. In the first half of the recital, Ray played a sonata by Grieg, followed by a sonata by Saint Saens. Then after intermission, Ray played Bach's Chaconne. After the Chaconne was this work, Claire de Lune. After the last scheduled work on the programme, Ravel's Tsigane, Ray played played a total of 4 encores: an original work in the tango style, Estrellita by Manuel Ponce (arr. Heifetz), Kreisler's Tambourin Chinois , and Victorio Monte's Csardas (Ray's arrangement, I presume).

Someone print this and frame it and send it to me for Christmas, please. Oh and somehow add Ray's playing in the background too please while you're at it. Lol.

This was my father's mother's favorite piece to play. Your comment gave me shivers.

Actually, ‘Clair de lune’ takes its title from an atmospheric poem by the French poet Paul Verlaine which depicts the soul as somewhere full of music ‘in a minor key’ where birds are inspired to sing by the ‘sad and beautiful’ light of the moon. But, if you think of mothers and their children when you hear it, that's fine, too.
