Debunking the FL Studio Recording Myth

In this clip from Episode 11 of the Larry Ohh Show, we are reacting to an amazing video explaining a great way to record vocals and instruments in FL Studio. Proving the point that FL Studio is just as good as any daw for recording / mixing vocals and intstruments.
This is a weekly podcast where we talk about everything FL Studio and music production!

you can select multiple tracks in the playlist then when you right click to assign to audio track it will automaticaly send each track to its own mixer channel starting from the insert you choose so you dont have to go one by one to make a template

My first DAW was FL Studio, or how was named then, Fruity Loops. This happened somwhere in 2002-2003... After some years in FL I thot to try other DAWs and boy, that lack of freedom to do things anyway I want is what hold me not to go to other DAW. I still use the mixer way of recording... After 20+ years with FL I'm not looking at other DAW anymore! 😂

What you said in the beginning about the disconnect for most people with the playlist and the mixer I think that is the most confusing bit within FL Studio. Because in most people's minds the playlist view should correspond to the mixer or at least in my mind it makes sense. when the playlist is all full of randomness and doesn't relate to things on the mixer side that just adds an entire layer of unnessesary confusion. Im a diehard ableton guy but id love to get to know FL a bit better but this learning has felt huge because of the simple workflow things that seem so difficult to get across.

I see where you're coming from, but as a former Logic user, I think the mixer not corresponding to the playlist in FL was a great thing in that it was way less restrictive than other DAWs, and it allowed me to create in my own way eventually.

I use FL since day one (2015 actually) and I'm not EDM/trap guy! I use it to recording and mixing! I don't know why people still think that FL is just to make beats. It's easy in FL - that's a fact. I can make trap beat in 15 min! But recording is as same easy as making beats.

The only people who still say FL sucks for recording are the ones who don't know how to use it or don't use it at all. This is the correct way to do it but I also wouldn't say it's a "gem". This feature was heavily advertised by image-line when it was introduced.

Yeah tracking stuff becomes more useful in producer/signature/all plugins versions when you can manipulate audio tracks and convert them into midi so you can just sing or play notes with your first instrument then convert that to midi, also bouncing audio into edison for editing etc.. it becomes more usable. I think that audio clips can still be improved but like say if I want to record guitar or get sounds from hardware or voice its useful. The only trick with the line in is making sure the insert is set up for your recording line -- and that your asio etc.. is setup. I think this will be way more useful when multiple interfaces are able to be tied to different tracks. For someone starting out they will mostly use it to record line in / voice etc.. with interfaces it might be an instrument etc.. but if/when people expand their gear it allows for multitracking when inputs can be mapped to individual tracks. I see where it is at as sort of an early stage for that. Definately something people will use when they move to tracking instruments and a mic.

I have zero problems recording my synths or my mic. It is the midi functions/connection that I have issues with. I'll give an example. If Im using my take 5 synth, it's connected via USB to computer and to my audio interface. In the settings and in Midi Out, i set the port to 33. Now, if i draw in some notes in the piano roll or add some midi and hit play, the sound coming out isn't the same sound as the preset im using from my take 5. It's almost like it adds another layer, a saw wave with some release to it. The stranger part is that it always happens when Im using the presets I've made in the take 5. When Im using a factory preset, it does it about half the time. Knowone can figure this out, not Sequential, not Image line. Hopefully, that update helps. i did mention it in that survey from 2 weeks ago

One issue I find when recording fl studio is some times it will automatically jump to another mixer track and start recording.. ..is any body having the same issue..Is it possible to lock the specific Record track ?

The last guy I was trying to record made a big deal about me using FL instead of Pro Tools. There is no point trying to convince people it is all about how good of an engineer you are, your recording setup and interface, and how well you know your DAW, and not which DAW you use. It’s about as fruitless as trying to convince FL users you can use any newer version of FL and it is not going to sound worse than version blah blah blah.

Two biggest disconnects of FL Studio vs all other daws. FL use the beat pad to route to the mixer, not the arrangement tracks. No automations collapsed and all set up with each track. That is huge, and makes such less intuitive decisions. FL is almost like cutting half intuition off. that method worked for me for many years. and then after I realized ableton racks, a macro configure button, everything was automated even faster than it already had seemed the first method.

I regularly do all of these steps for rough ideas but until you can completely hide each grouping of tracks, FL is trash for recording imo. I know you can collapse it, but if you're recording vocals you can easily do 100 takes between your verse leads, hook leads, doubles, harmonies, adlibs, etc. And even when all of the tracks are collapsed it still requires a lot of scrolling and looks cluttered. They should completely hide it and do a drop down menu situation to access your playlists and automation like Pro Tools

How about comp editing multiple track instruments like drums with different takes. Then linking them together like “ group edit “ then beat detective style slice and quantize??? I left fl 10 years ago from 1 ( stability is bad compared to s1 ) and 2 ( not being able to track drums in multiple takes and then comp edit and time correct in a streamlined workflow. Has that been addressed?

For producers who record live audio here and there, this is good enough but FL will never be on the level of other DAWs for serious audio recording until it adds a faster more efficient way to comp audio. This is what musicians use for creating a composite of multuple audio takes. Slow as molasses in FL compared to protools, studio one, bitwig, and ableton and others.
