Education is the most important thing to me in the entire world, and as a teacher myself I am eager to raise awareness for the difficult situation Hungarian teachers currently find themselves in. In addition to the t-shirt, you will get an original WALKINGWITHWILLIE sticker and a handwritten, thank you letter autographed by me. All additional profits from the t-shirts will go towards funding my future videos. I personally guarantee that every single cent I make from this merchandise will be used to bring you more content in 2023. Thank you so much for your support thus far.
These t-shirts are over a year in the making. During that time I’ve been collaborating with Hungarian artist @takeapiecedesign on bringing various characters from Hungarian and world history to life. His incredible talent has been so inspirational for my own work. We decided to make Lúdas Matyi our first merch drop because he is the type of character that I think the world is crying out for right now. You know Lúdas Matyi gets some bad luck at the beginning of the story when the evil Lord Döbrögi steals his geese and whips him in front of the whole town. But Matyi doesn’t whine or complain or cry. No. He spends his life bettering himself so he can get revenge! Perhaps it is questionable whether or not that is the best use of his talents, but it sure makes for an inspirational tale. And I think Matyi can be commended for his resourcefulness, cleverness, and courage. I like to think that after he gives the horrible Döbrögi his just desserts, he spends the rest of his days fighting injustice everywhere he finds it.

Debrecen was the obvious choice for this episode because Fazekas Mihaly, the man who brought the tale of Lúdas Matyi to Hungary back at the beginning of the 18th century. This was actually my second time in Debrecen as I had once before visited the famous Aquaticum bathhouse. Unfortunately we just didn't have time for the Aquaticum today, but I did get to see the lovely city of Debrecen which I never before had the chance to walk around. What a true delight it was. I love Debrecen. It's such a charming town. But perhaps my favorite part about the second largest city in Hungary was the fact that the spirit of writing and enlightenment and education exudes throughout the entire city. This is a place for writers, poet and academics of every shape size and color. From their beloved Csokonai Vitéz Mihály, the brilliant enlightenment poet who died so tragically young, to Kölcsey Ferenc who penned the Hungarian national anthem, to the heroic Fazékas Mihaly, this city is a place that lives and breathes the magyar language. I felt truly at home here, from my first encounter with a gaggle of Hungarian school kids, to the warm welcome I received inside Ibolya Presszó, and with all the passerby's I met in and around the grounds of the university, statue park and elsewhere. for fueling my voyage for the day and soaking up all the beer I swilled at Lugas and Valhalla in the post filming session.

So wonderful. We were just in Debrecen in October then on to Mezokovesd. My son moved to Hungary, also. Very much enjoyed this folk tale exploration of the town. Brilliant teaching of immersion history! Truly brilliant!

@@user-zd5px1bs4b I was student between 2001-2008. It was difficult to find any reasonable job. I don't know what is the current situation. One thing I'm sure, the payments are much lower than forexample here in Budapest or even western Hungary.
I graduated at the Fazekas Mihály Grammar School in Budapest long long time ago... We played the story of Ludas Matyi every year to the freshmen :) The school is located in the heart of Józsefváros on the Horvath Mihály square and it's one of the best secondary schools in the country.

To top this, I graduated at the Fazekas Mihály Gimnázium (=Grammar School) in Debrecen long time ago...It is one of the best, if not THE best, secondary school in the country outside of Budapest. Both Fazekas Schools are famous for their very high level mathematics specialization.

Hats off to that Hungarian speech in the beginning! For an American, you definitely try and if I will ignore the obvious American accent, the grammar was almost fine to me. P. S.: I am not a Hungarian, I just rate it from my perspective of learning the language 3 years, at the time of writing this comment.

The storytelling was fabulous, the vibe was authentic, and the food 🍔and drinks 🍺were appetizing! I loved every minute of it! Thanks a lot! 😊
