Debra Has Been Homeless in Venice Beach for Nine Years

Debra has been homeless in Venice Beach for nine years. After her roommate died, she was given two weeks to move. Although she receives Social Security Disability Income, it's still not enough to cover rent, so Debra ended up on the streets of Los Angeles.
Right before this interview, LAPD threatened to arrest Debra for being homeless. She was visibly upset. You don't have to be a medical professional to see Debra is disabled. She is trying to survive the horrors of life on the streets and for an elderly homeless woman, Debra lives in constant anxiety and fear.
The criminalization of homelessness continues in almost every community. Instead of offering people the help they need, police harass homeless people in an attempt to push them out of sight.
Whenever I meet someone like Debra, I wonder what they were like when they first became homeless. She's been on the streets for a very long time. Too long. Debra has survived hell many times over. If we were able to help Debra and those like her as the enter into homelessness get off the streets into housing, my guess is that after a short period of healing, people would restabilize and be able to take care of themselves.
The homeless sector is structured to only help the most vulnerable. That means that Debra is still not yet vulnerable enough to get the help she needs. Think about that for a moment. People have to become so vulnerable that the government will have to take care of them for the rest of their lives.
The issue is the lack of resources. Since there is not enough housing for everyone, even though housing saves lives and saves taxpayer money, the homeless sector prioritizes those who need it most. We need your help in making sure there is enough housing for everyone who needs it.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeople.tv/getinvolved to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, a living wage or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Each year, our groundbreaking educational content reaches more than a billion people across the globe. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I can totally relate to Debra. Absolutely destitute.I was homeless on a couch for 17 months, followed by 29 months on the street, sleeping in 24 hr coffee shops & MacDonalds. I lost count of the amount of times I was robbed and or abused by Police or people in the street. Then became very ill with an infection and was hospitalized for a month. Then my mother died the following month.and I moved in with my father, age 82, with failing health, to look after him. I could not imagine being homeless now with the Covid-19 pandemic. I'd probably be dead. And in reality I am just one of many who experience homelessness in the world. The question that comes to mind is, will we ever as as a society put an end to homelessness and as a 54-year-old man now, wonder if we can.

  • @TheShrededward

    @TheShrededward

You have to ask the question a bit differently. You got a house because you moved in with your father, but your question is "well we ver as a society". The short answer to that is no. Ask your dad how he got the house that he has. If you're waiting for society, then you have a long ass wait. we don't give a shit about you. Earn it yourself, or don't. I don't give a shit. I worked for my house and you're just 4 years younger than me. I own my own house outright. What the fuck have you been doing the last 54 years?

I just turned 60 am low income but am one of the fortunate ones to have subsidized housing in the pnw. Baby boomers are the fastest growing segment of the homeless population. Not long ago we had the YMCA and YWCA that had rooms for people like Debra to live in, if you have very little income like SSI/Disability they worked with you so you paid what you could afford. I know the SRO hotels downtown were not great places to live, but they were something and it, at the very least, gave people an address. All that is gone. The rich kids decided it's cool to live downtown so everything's been gutted into these $3000 micro-apartments. How can you sign up for help when you have no mailing address. Without her phone, any ties to the world are gone. That's how important it is to have a basic working phone. She should be able to get one of those Lifeline phones, but again, you have to have an address.

I was a lazy, ill-tempered, game addict right out of highschool. Dropped out of college for the sake of high scores. Didn't know anything of the world outside of my bedroom until the day I was shipped off to Florida with nothing but my car. Put myself in about $10,000 credit debt at only 20 years old with bottom of the barrel jobs. For 8 months I lived out of that gross van and slept through a hurricane in a walmart parking lot until my late grandfather gave me another chance. Had he not done that today I'd still be homeless, 4 years later. These people need help and can not do it alone. My experience changed me forever. Not once did I beg, not once did people show me any kindness. Police will bother you no matter where you park your car. For being homeless people automatically assume you do drugs. Once you hit rock bottom it's almost impossible to get back up alone.

But in most places the wait is over 7 years. In LA they have shelter style housing where you pay or $800 for a bunk bed room with 10 others to a room. $800 is actually a SSI recipients whole check. If Debra can get a ride and move from Venice Beach to Van Nuys (35 minutes driving distance), she can take a shower at the "Hope of the Valley Rescue Mission Help Center" located at 6425 Tyrone Avenue, Van Nuys, California 91401. They offer free 15 minute showers from Monday through Friday (8:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.) and then lunch at 12:00 p.m. She can receive mail at the Center, and they offer other services. F that, if the “good cop’s” pursuit to be an altruistic hero blinds them so much that they that can’t reflect on their own villainous career choice, then they are naieve at best. The LAPD is nothing more than a guardian to serve the rich and harass the poor into either leaving or fking dying. I don’t care anymore about how much they get exploited by local and state bureaucracy, it doesn’t change the fact that they pass and enforce that very same exploitation onto the citizens that pay their freaking salary.

As I got older I had to get a part time job when I was in high school and never stopped working since. Never ever have I had a break from working, not even through some tough health issues. Less jobs for the masses, retail closure ,along with factories etc;not to mention robotics ,AI,they all play a part in job loss. If only we could go back to the 70s..and all time rents are governed by greedy landlords, and low pay;people will never gain ground. Also people lose their jobs for all manner of reasons. I have paid background checks for apartments they were approved I offered to pay for move in costs, first month rent, my cousin has a job as a manager of little caesars pizza and my other cousin is on ssi together they had enough to pay rent and have money left over each month. They backed out each time. It’s heartbreaking. Our family thinks my aunt is controlling them because they sound different from before and I think bc being on the streets so long they follow her. I also fear they are comfortable or maybe afraid of getting back into normal life. It’s a very sad thing for those on the streets. My brother is a meth addict and has been on the streets also for about 5 years. It’s more common now a days then you think. Being that I have family who’s homeless I always feel the need to want to help my community, if we all do something little bit at a time we can hopefully change the way things are even one life changed matters.

I've watched quite a few homelessness videos outside this channel and OMG the heartlessness and callousness of people in them is at an extreme. Its amazing and terrifying that people so violently against helping those in need exist. Thankfully invisible people exists to counter much of that hate. Sadly those people steeped in so much hate never think for a second that they could ever be homeless. It can happen to anyone as mark often says. Yet people never think it will.

It's very windy out there on Venice Beach- it used to give me headaches when I was younger. My first job was on the boardwalk, second job was on Washington at a kosher bagel shop so I used to take garbage bags full of bagels to the boardwalk after work. If you have extra supplies, bring em to Venice Beach. Wet wipes, socks, water, food, etc. The people out there are just people. Trust ur instincts. It's all good. Person to person. IT'S ALL GOOD. Just do it. #NativeWestLosAngeles

I'll pray for her but at the same time if you get SSI she should be straight and living in Venice that's probably why she can't afford the living maybe she need to live in a different state hop on the bus when she get her SSI because ain't nobody paying no 300 $400or no cell she better come up here to Michigan and she better get her a MetroPCS is anywhere from $25 to $50 a month depending on your plan and it's no contract phone she got to be on something.

Yea though she also seems autistic, which may make it harder for her to make those types of decisions. Though I’m not gonna say I know she is, or am I trying to offend her just that that is why I think she prioritizes a phone over other solutions.

That's bloody madness and cruel. I have been homeless twice and fighting every day to not be again. Spending hours every day trying to sale most of my belongings. Disability barely pays the rent. Now with this covid horror, millions more are facing homelessness. It is bad enough to try and exist on the street but arresting them. Give me a Break! That's inhumane! If you don't think it can happen to you. Think Again. It can happen easier than you think. Back to the sales lists update. The only thing that saved the apt i am in is the apt lockdowns across the city. They wanted to raise the rent and I can't really afford it now. Have to find a way to check on Section 8 or housing. I wish her and the millions of others the best of luck. What is this country becoming?

She is so honest, and well-spoken,. She seems so help-able, esp if she has an income. There's got to be a program to help her!! She dosent seem like she would required that much help and we would have a homeless person off the streets and safe!

Yq well it's a different social structure. About 99 percent of American homeless would take advantage of that and not grow as individuals. They would simply trash the place and do drugs.

@@aewhatever if you do that you will get arrested so that isn't really smart to do.. but i get where you coming from.. the government can do alot to prevent mass homelessness i think ,america just is a shit place when it comes to healthcare and systems to help the poor. It can't be that there are only unsalaried groups which help homeless people.

I was homeless and now I'm one 10'×8' room away from being homeless, My advice is dont get sick and go to hospital for an extended stay and come out thinking "at least I'm alive",your job, home, and car payment do not care and something's feel worse than death.

I have been homeless 3 times in this life...the hardest part is always being on the go...never able to just relax for a bit...ones guard must be maintained at all times..socks are so very important..i used to dream of a new pair of socks..so for those that don't know..giving a pair of socks is everything...every time I had a full time job as well....i worked my way back into housing... I finally was stable...but at the age of 22 in was hurt on the job and became disabled...perscribed fentanyl for my pain...but after two years was tried of feeling stupid so I stopped the meds cold turkey..luckily no withdrawal....docs were shocked but to me if one takes it for the proper use them it really is fine....my ignorance...as my docs later told me I was part of the 5% of the world's population that can't get addicted to opiates...the university of Washington decided to take my DNA to study and try and find a cure for opiate addiction... Well I did force myself to work till my body shut down due to my disabilities...and forced with very few options.... Was approved for SSDI to make the story short....bit due to my age and only getting half the average in benefits as well the average person...i was looking at a return to the streets... But I found out I can still collect my benefits anywhere in the world except for 13 countries...so I did some research..and moved I currently find myself able to maintain an upper middle class lifestyle..supporting a family of three for around 800 dollars a month...in my city one can rent a two bed single bath for 100 a month...i see my doc for 10 dollars an office visit once a month and my meds are 60-70 a month...a live in maid is 100 a month plus their basic hygiene needs and food...my house in a gated community is 211 a month at a 15yr mortgage...my sons private school is 600 a year plus books and uniform...a meal at a fast food type is about 2 dollars... I have lived here now for a solid 5yrs and the comfort of never having to worry for bills is amazing...i know I may be asked and before I get beat up in the comments please just understand that my choices may not be the best.course for everyone or you...but for me it was...and just trying to express the knowledge to others who may find themselves look at the future I saw for myself before I moved... I know it may or will be asked...so I will say..i am in the Philippines...and although I picked this country it may not be best.for you..so if you find yourself considering this option..use your time and research what may fit your needs best...if anyone has any questions my email is motto966@yahoo.com...i have considered doing a blog of my experiences but am on the reserved side personality wise and not very tech savvy...please keep any comments on the positive side and thank you for taking a moment to read a portion of myself...i hope all find their niche in this life that leads to having the security, the community and well being we all deserve..

How is she charging her cell phone? The libraries are closed and you can’t charge at Starbucks. Maybe she has a solar charger? But they don’t charge that well. Best of luck to her. People over 50, especially women, are becoming homeless at record numbers in America.
