80 years old and homeless veteran in Los Angeles needs help

Help Wendell get an RV to go back home gofund.me/e55367c9
Wendell is an 80-year-old retired veteran who finds himself facing the harsh realities of homelessness in Los Angeles. After a life marked by service and sacrifice, including the heartbreaking loss of one son in the Afghanistan war and another in a tragic car accident, Wendell's challenges escalated when his beloved wife was diagnosed with cancer. Despite spending every penny on her treatment, she passed away, leaving Wendell without his life partner and financially devastated. Today, Wendell lives in a broken-down RV, a stark reminder of the cascading tragedies that led him to this point.
The crisis of elderly homelessness is escalating, with countless older adults like Wendell finding themselves without a safe place to call home. The vulnerability of this population is profound, as they face unique health and mobility challenges, exacerbated by the lack of stable housing. In urban areas like Los Angeles, where the cost of living is high and social services are stretched thin, the plight of elderly homeless individuals is particularly acute.
A dedicated street medicine team brought Wendell's situation to our attention, emphasizing his reluctance to ask for financial help. Wendell's humble wish is for a functioning RV, allowing him the dignity of mobility and the ability to relocate to a place he can once again call home. Understanding the improbability of such a donation, we convinced Wendell to agree to a GoFundMe campaign. Rest assured, this campaign is transparent-every cent raised goes directly to Wendell’s bank account to fund his new RV.
We have made sure that there are people involved to help Wendell drive to the location that he wants to go and that he will be taken care of.

About Invisible People
There is a direct correlation between what the general public perceives about homelessness and how it affects policy change. Most people blame homelessness on the person experiencing it instead of the increasing shortage of affordable housing, lack of employment, childhood trauma, lack of a living wage, or the countless reasons that put a person at risk. This lack of understanding creates a dangerous cycle of misperception that leads to the inability to effectively address the root causes of homelessness.
We imagine a world where everyone has a place to call home. Each day, we work to fight homelessness by giving it a face while educating individuals about the systemic issues that contribute to its existence. Through storytelling, education, news, and activism, we are changing the narrative on homelessness.
This isn’t just talk. Our groundbreaking educational content reaches millions of people every month. Our real and unfiltered stories of homelessness shatter stereotypes, demand attention and deliver a call-to-action that is being answered by governments, major brands, nonprofit organizations, and everyday citizens just like you.
However, there is more work to be done on the road ahead. Homelessness is undoubtedly one of our biggest societal issues today and will only continue to grow if we don’t take action now.
Invisible People is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to educating the public about homelessness through innovative storytelling, news, and advocacy. Since our launch in 2008, Invisible People has become a pioneer and trusted resource for inspiring action and raising awareness in support of advocacy, policy change and thoughtful dialogue around poverty in North America and the United Kingdom.

I just got off the phone with Wendell. I'm going to visit him soon, and we're going to record an update video. He bought a new RV-well, it's new to him. Because you guys gave extra, he bought an RV for the woman who lived in a tent in front of where his RV was parked. He plans on helping more people. Just wanted to share the update and say thank you. New video coming as soon as I can get over to visit with him.

Nobody PERIOD should be homeless. This is ridiculous. Sad to see because I am homeless too. He’s right about how people are out here. Sketchy, and if you’re not about drinking or drugs, you better be able to sustain around chaos. Most people don’t make it that long or they go completely numb and lose sight of any hope or help. Especially if you’re a man because men are looked down on as being lazy or a punk or this or that if we don’t have skills great enough to pay us enough to sustain life on our own. That’s the real reason many are homeless. Inflation, and skills we do have used to be able to pay for our own place, but not anymore.

Well, what do you want the country to do? He made his choices. I live on 1200 per month and am enjoying it. Why doesn't he find a flat bed hauler and tow the rv he has to where he wants to be? Or go to the library and internet search for new digs...If one is in a high rent area, find another city/area. I am a senior, got rid of my car, (no more of that expense) use public transportation (free)and have ebt. also. If he is allowed to be where he wants to go. Uhaul a truck and put the rv's front end on a tow apparatus, and drive up to where he wants to go. Enterprise has pickups for $100 per day (all insurance electives added) Go to uhaul and get a car hauler. He can also buy an CO2 pistol and load it with pepper balls....I don't think the crazies will come around. Well got to write out a check for gas....

The way America is right now, if I meet a comfortable, gainfully employed person, there's a good chance they're standing on a mountain of destroyed lives they've used, abused, and thrown away to get where they are. Especially true now, since they're getting more brazenly militaristic and opinionated about how the poor should be condemned, quarantined, jailed, or medically "dealt with" by cop or ER. It's guilt for pulling the ladder up behind them, and fear of dwindling resources ever being restoratively distributed.

I tried to help jim to get his VA benefits What a nightmare. It's infuriating how the government can send kids to war without a blink but try and be compensated and they'll make it so hard that you quit which is what they want. Anyway I donated in Memory of my Uncle because he certainly walked in those shoes. Thank you for your service. My Uncle is buried at the Veterans Cemetery by Bakersfield. It's quite moving there. The fact he's in his 80's and street homeless should rain down shame on every politician in this country. There is simply NO WAY this man should be homeless. I am incensed. The fact this 80 year old man is street homeless offends even my hard hearted werewolf like soul. There is NO WAY this country can say it has even the vestige of a Christian, moral or compassionate heart so long as this man dwells outside a safe climate controlled home. I feel the pain for that man, I am going to be 80 this year and my son is almost 60 and we are facing homelessness within 90 days. It isn't because I do not have an income, it's because renters have raised the rent so unbelievably high you cannot afford to live. Because health issues add to the expenses that younger people do not always have. And so here we are facing this terrible dilemma which I have no clue what it's going to be like. I've never been homeless so I've never not paid my bills and I've never gone hungry. All my people have died off, and any of the younger ones still around don't want to hear what you have to say because they're afraid that you may be a burden to them. So at this point I put my trust in God 100%.

Like myself solace in peace and quiet is medicinal. Did you know that we could buy every homeless senior in the United States a home take care of them for 25 years with the money we spent overseas to these other countries. Not to mention the money that we’ve spent on illegal immigration housing immigrants in five star hotels. Ridiculous this doesn’t make any sense. I know this video just came out and I am sure there’s somebody out there with a great deal of money and influence and help can get this gentleman a motorhome so he can get where he needs to be. (((Hugs))) this is a very unique story because it was service providers that connected me to Wendell. He is surrounded by a group of people that are really trying to help him.

“Veteran” and “homeless” are not 2 words that belong in the same sentence. Just donated as it’s the least I can do for the sacrifices you have made.

This country is wealthy enough to take care of all that and more instead of wasting hundreds of billions and trillions on endless war mongering

My family threw me out when I was 17 years old. I have been homeless 3x in my life and my family could have cared less. It is absolutely disgraceful what this country is doing to the people who spent 50+ years building this country and now illegal immigrants get more benefits than Americans.

@@GlockPeace I have a couple awesome people in my life. I'm also 57 years old and it took a long time to get to this point of healing and peace. I hope you have found some trustworthy people in your life as well. ❤️

I've been on the streets and understand that not everyone is on drugs. Some just fell into financial hardships or domino effects of life, leading to the loss of home or possessions. When your homeless people can be cruel more often than not, and it's when some actually treat you like a human being, it's a nice feeling even for a moment.

yes true, and there are many who have physical illness or mental illness such as elderly with dementia, people with anxiety & PTSD or other phobias, delusions or autism spectrum that put them in a place where they can't function properly in society or hold gainful employment. These people really need societal and governmental help and supports. Also I hope you are doing better! You deserve to be safe and happy!
