I love this program! I met Debi Thomas while she was on tour in Chicago. She was so cool! A few years later, she attended Medical School at Northwestern University and she was always volunteering her time to teach disadvantaged children how to skate. Although she didn't win the gold in Calgary, she was certainly a champion!

Debbie was always so natural during interviews just telling us about her difficulties and thoughts and still keeping a sense of humor. Great smile and great personality! Wishing you a happy birthday for many, many years to come!

Debi clearly had trouble containing her nerves for big competitions. Too bad in her time there were no resources or notions to deal with pressure and competing. Unlike today where there are plenty of resources available.

Second only to Ito in the short, imo.

Could never understand the judging here as Witt actually skated a better SP than at the Olympics where she pre rotated the 2L in the combination but won. I’m thinking because Witt won the figures here they gave the SP to Thomas to maintain interest and give both a chance in the free rather than it being a foregone conclusion 🤷🏽‍♀️

Philip Alumbo Her combination spin was so slow after the change of foot she practically stopped. And where was her skirt 🤔

Flat, my azz. The choreography to the music selection was in point. She was having fun out there, and it showed. Katarina’s performance, as usual, was overdone with theatrics, starting with the costume. This sp performance was better than at Calgary, which may explain why she won the sp in Budapest, but not at the Olympics.

@@victoriagill3337 - According to Alex McGowan, he thought both Debi $ Katarina skated a better SP at the 1988 worlds.

I love this program. But srsly Debi? Your hair is an atrocity. And don't give me the whole I'm black song and dance. You've had better hair, and any black woman would scold you too. You look like you just woke up! Show some respect to your sport. She had clearly checked out of amateur skating by this point. I love this program and thought it should have been second to Ito. She won it, but by a hair, no pun intended. You think she'd look this way on a beach in the Bahamas? Self respect wasn't really her thing I guess. Excuses excuses etc. Didn't she just randomly marry some guy right before this competition? She should have let Jeri Campbell or Tonya Harding the US alternates come here and start making a name for themselves.

Liam Foreman Wow...lol! But you could tell she had checked out; she wasn't even sure she was gonna skate in the World's. Look at her from '86 when she won it all to how she looked right there. It had taken it's toll on her. I pray she gets her life back on track, she owes it to herself

80s was marked by bad skater hair, so many messy ponytails and hair hanging out of scrunchies. Regardless of your hair type, never underestimate the timeless beauty of short hair or hair pulled neatly into a bun.

@@ginacleveland7995 Debi was bipolar, which was not discovered until years later--and, unfortunately after she ended up losing her medical license and practice for which she had worked so hard for. I had a feeling during those early days that something was wrong, for she was so emotionally labile. If she had been diagnosed earlier and received treatment, the outcome could have been a lot different.
