I saw an interview once where Rachel Dratch, who had just started on SNL, said she was afraid she’d be fired after this sketch because she broke character so many times. No Rachel, it’s the sketch that singlehandedly made you an SNL icon

She definitely had an interview where she spoke of her fear of being fired because of this sketch. But its clear that Jimmy Fallon triggered it and and everyone else in this sketch also broke character. It would have been crazy for them to fire her without firing somebody else first. This is one of the rare situations where I think character breaking makes the sketch better. I can't help but laugh no matter how many times I have watched this video.

The "I can't have children" line hit way harder than it was probably originally intended. That drop was so freakin' funny, I can't stop laughing.

Most of the laughter from Debbie is "oh god I slightly broke but now I have to say something awful, which is making it much worse" lolol

I love that when she makes the face for the feline A.I.D.S. line, instead of playing the womp womp horn they play a fucked up cat noise.

Only Rachel Dratch could make "I can't have children" hilarious.

No hes not. Poehler and Arisen are like Ferrell, they are pros. Fallon, Dratch & Sanzs do this on every skit from the time period. Especially Fallon & Sanzs. Its still funny to you after they do this time & again, skit after skit after skit. Good for you then but it pisses me off. Its so contrived.

+Captain Chinook Well, the point where Pluto bolts will always get me. And, "I can't have children"- regardless of who did or didn't break character, or whether it was a common occurrence. Agree to disagree.

I’ve seen this sketch a million times and I am only just realizing that Horatio Sans is crying with laughter after the “it’s official… I can’t have children” line 😂😂 You can see his tears and he actually wipes his face with the waffles. I’m dying 🤣🤣

I have heard other cast members say they don't like working with Fallon for this reason. I read that Kenan Thompson confronted him about it, and told him to stop doing it on skits they were in together.

You can see the crisis at @1:46. The trombone sound and glaring down the lens was way too funny. It was like “I’m gonna crack with this and there’s nothing I can do about it.”

You know you've written great comedy sketch material when no one can keep it together.

This is one of my favorite sketches because it went so badly. I could watch this over and over, just to watch each person individually. Jimmy was doing so bad but then at the end he was just jamming his mouth full with waffles. Dratch had to go into full on weeping to try to cover it, and Amy and Lindsay are just starting intently into their waffles

One of the funniest moments ever on the show. Legend has it that when they rehearsed the skit they didn't have the "womp womp" sound effect to practice with so it caught then off guard in the live show. And we all reap the benefits. Carol Burnett level funny!

Everything came together perfectly on this skit: the actors and Disney characters in the background, the trombone sound effects, Rachel’s perfect timing and hilarious facial mugging, the writing, and the failed attempts of the players to stay in character-all made for what might just be the funniest 6 minutes in the history of SNL.

That happened a lot on SNL. In the "Matt Foley" sketch the table wasn't supposed to break when Chris Farley (who was infamous for trying to crack up his castmates on live TV) jumped on it. In "Massive Headwound Harry" a crew member added baby food to Dana Carvey's massive headwound makeup so the dog would start eating it!

One member breaks during a skit... its hilarious, whole cast... its legendary.

Rachel said they had no problem at all during rehearsal but for some reason they absolutely could not keep it together live. Rachel was very good at not breaking character, that's why I laughi hysterically at this sketch.

from what I read (cast members, writers themselves) it's all because Rachel Dratch (who played Debbie Downer) made the mistake of saying that the North Korean media was so "sensitive" instead of so secretive (which is what the script was written her to say), which she did not mistake in saying all week and in dress rehearsal, it was at THAT point (when it was live) where the blooper and cast breaking character started

They added the trumpet (woomp woomp) live, which they didn't use in rehearsal. Took them all by suprise, hench the breaking of character 😄 Edit: grammar.

+Dilly Dally Absolutely, it was the horn. I think they didn't have the orchestra available during the skit rehearsal so they just saw in the script [horn sound] or something. When they did it live and actually heard the horn, it was just too much.

I'm married to Debbie Downer. One year during the family Christmas gathering she spent an hour talking about our cat's enflamed bowel. "It's the number one killer of domestic cats."

Love this! Jimmy Fallon just keeps cramming waffles into his mouth to avoid laughing and ends up with a ridiculous mouthful at one point. The best part is Horatio Sanz, especially when he dabs his tears with the waffle.
