I'm 47 years old Japanese. When I was in elementary school, I watched this movie on TV while I was home alone. I had forgotten most of the story, but I clearly remember the dark atmosphere that permeated the entire movie and the horror of the black sea. In particular, the scene where a man falls into a live fish warehouse and dies along with a skeleton was shocking for young children. I couldn't remember the title of the movie for a long time, but luckily KZread guided me. Thank you for letting me watch this movie. It brought back memories of my childhood.

Despite what the critics say, this film isn't so bad. It's a humble, low budget, imaginative, interesting, horror film. It's stood the test of time & is now being rediscovered & appreciated. Can't believe the millions of views & positive comments this film has received, It's great that the horror movie fans ignored the stuck up know-it-all critics who hated this film & who wanted everyone else to hate it too.

not even a horror fan. think i got it recommended because i watch brick immortar / safety review/audits of naval disasters. i watched it anyway and i really thought it was pretty good! critics probably get bored because they want to be entertained constantly so they don't have any time to listen to their own thoughts. this film had lots of moodbuilding time to just pause and think. that's probably why they had a bad experience. their thoughts suck.

@@spilledbitch I hate how the critics praise high end films & try to bury fun little horror movies like DEATH SHIP (or the FRIDAY THE 13TH films) with either bad reviews or no reviews at all - ignoring the films altogether. You want something really depressing about how critics mess things up for everyone, take a look at the Hudson Hawk page on Wikipedia. To me, one of Bruce Willis' best films, something original from the rest of his stuff, for the most part, and it shows he made a public apology to people over it, just because it wasn't another Die Hard, or the like. Update: Just looked at the site, myself, again, and looks like they removed that little tidbit, unless I'm missing it somewhere, but, used to be on the page.
Like I say and I know it, Oldschool, be it Food, Musik, Fashion and Movies, is always the BEST. Thanks for sharing

A surprisingly good low budget simple fairly straightforward film with a well selected cast and a inexpensive plot. What I can't quite figure out so far (36:57) is, is the ship itself doing these things, or are the cast surrounded by invisible ghosts who are doing it. Possibly inspired by William Hope Hodgeson's sea stories.

Not too bad for a old movie. I suppose this film was made in the 70s. 25 years after the war ended it was still a fresh memory at this time. But what most of the comment says it was interesting since the beginning of the movie. Compare to new US movies where they are always talking for saying nothing.

Watched this film with my family as a boy in 🇲🇽 and could never forget how shocking some of the scenes were like the guy drowning in the skeleton net and the poor girlfriend trapped in the blood shower and then toss into the ocean naked. This and Ghostship (which it copy the poster) that had the gory dance hall opening legit made me Afraid to travel by boat to the sea.
Somewhat good movie, personally found constant adverts every 10 minutes very annoying 🙄
Made in 1980? I would've guessed 1960 from the manner of speech, and behavior of the cast. Interesting plot, something like that has been in other films with variations on that theme, most notably "Ghost Ship". I'm thinking the engine was steam powered, but it may have been a Diesel since there wasn't a boiler room shown, but who knows.

This film is a classic. This is a B Rated horror film, but it's a good one. I wish that Nick could have lived.
This weird low budget offering is a curious role for George Kennedy,having been starring alongside Clint Eastwood in thunderbolt and lightfoot and the Eiger sanction,it certainly didn't stretch his ability as an actor.

I watched and recorded this pic, back in the mid-90's!! It's a 'GHOSTSHIP', long before "GHOSTSHIP"!! "DEATH SHIP" is NOT, the first movie ever made, about a haunted ship/boat!! Actually the original is "THE GHOSTSHIP", from 1942-43. It's about a couple who purchase a schooner, that's haunted. Not very scary, but an interesting ghost 👻, story, and worth viewing 👀!! That's the first one, of the genre. Then this. …………One particular note though. Humorous or not, isn't it coincidental, that a WWll German freighter (even though, it was obviously constructed, later ), picks up a group of people, but the first one it knocks off, is the Jewish, guy (Saul Rubinek)🤔…………?
Excellent movie, surprised I've never seen it before. Well done, thank you.

Low budget but this movie scared the crap out of me when I was a teenager
There's a few things that you probably have noticed It was a German World War II freighter, probably had a time or two used in the Kriegsmarine, lived a relatively anticlimactic life. When the crew of the ocean liner picks up the echo of the approaching ghost ship on their radar, the close-up of the ship's radar imagery is a reverse-image video clip of the fog-covered "Skull Island", taken from King Kong (1976). The footage showing the movement of the Death Ship was the result of filming from a small boat moving around it. The crew shot for about an hour before the Death Ship broke down. The rest of the required shots were achieved by faking movement, as the broken down vessel was anchored and stationary. As the ghost ship collided with the cruise liner, brief scenes of an explosion, a grand piano falling between decks, and the engine room flooding were cut in. These scenes were from The Last Voyage (1960). When first looking in the bathroom there is a pin-up photo on the wall. The photo is of actress Betty Grable. The black and white musical film shown on the death ship is Everything Is Rhythm (1936).

A ship of the Damned.
This was a pretty good creepy movie ! Good acting and all and storyline.
I watched the uncut version on Betamax cassette in 1980. I was 9 years old.
Been a fan of this movie since I was 12 (about 12 years ago). I suspect that the real life prototype for the ship in this movie may have been the German auxiliary cruiser/merchant raider Kormoran. But the actual freighter they used for the film was an American ship called the Maurine K, built in 1965, and scrapped in 1986.
@Komet163B
Ай бұрын
How do you, as a 24 year old, know the name of the ship and when it was built? It looks like a late 50s to early 60s ship to me. There were no “bulk carrier” freighters, which this is, during WWII. An auxiliary cruiser would make more sense, along with Ashland wearing that badge instead of a U-Boat badge.
@transatlanticnostalgia4655

@@Komet163B I mean, I wouldn't have to be born in the 50s to know the name of the ship. I'm a ship enthusiast, and I've done my research. The ship you see in the movie was built in 1965. And she was called Maurine K at the time of filming this movie. But I was saying that what inspired the idea for the movie's fictional ship (not how it looks, but its actual purpose) was the German ship Kormoran. She was a freighter built in 1938, and converted to an auxiliary cruiser/merchant raider (a ship that disguises itself as a cargo ship to raid other ships) when the war started.

@@transatlanticnostalgia4655 The ship was poorly maintained and had a hard life for being only 15 years old when the movie was released. You can see in most of the scenes it’s not even moving. Instead a camera boat is moving around it to try to make it look like it can move under its own power. They refer to it as an interrogation/torture ship which is pure fiction/fantasy from the script writer. Being an auxiliary cruiser/raider was not “evil” enough for their story. It’s kind of a Shock Waves rip off, replacing the Nazi zombies with Nazi ghosts. Though Shock Waves also had a freighter ghost ship. The ship wreck seen in that movie I’ve heard of, and still exists, unlike this Maurine ship, which your the only person that seems to know anything about it. You probably know the name of the ship that the German order telegraph belongs to. And it’s interesting that a British/Canadian production used a dilapidated American vessel in their film. If the Death Ship were to have actually attempted to ram a cruise ship, it most likely would’ve resulted in the sinking of the Death Ship, instead of the cruise ship.
I love these old flics. At about 47:35 when the 1st liveboat goes down on it's own, and they run to the other lifeboat, you can see they are 2 different boats. Yet when they watch the 2nd lifeboat hit the water it's the shot of the 1st boat hitting the water.
Can't go wrong with Richard Crenna and George Kennedy. I saw this in the theater when it came out, damn! Forty three years ago, I was a lad of just twenty one! Good movie, creepy.

I love 80's horror movies!!😊
This is a true horror movie .
Love this movie when it's on tv I watch over and over again dont get tired of it for the suspense and the wierd back ground music and of course the whole plot of the story of the movie !👍👌😍❤😚😀🤤
The early 1980’s had a lot of good horror movies that are somewhat forgotten. The Fog, Terror Train , Prom Night, The Prowler and My Bloody Valentine to name a few.

I'm not 100% sure about Terror Train or Death Ship (although both Canadian co-productions) but My Bloody Valentine and Prom Night were Canadian tax shelter movies. Jamie Lee Curtis acted in The Fog, Terror Train and Prom Night.
