The gpu bricking was a flaw in the cards that only would have happened during either intensive cryptomining or a bug. Gpus have sensors on them that measure the temperature, in this case those were not near the spots that would get the hottest. So while the gpu was reporting nominal temperatures the card itself was essentially melting the solder. New world triggered this design flaw because the frame rate on the menu screen was uncapped. A stupid bug, that shouldn't have been in there. But i agree that it is hard to fault them for the bricking because those cards should have been able to handle that... even if they shouldn't have to.

If you read some interviews coming out of FFXI 20 Anniversary, it seems clear those devs did play other MMOs. FFXIV launch issues ultimately come from a disastrous development due to a horrible engine (the same one which derailed XV) and a lot of stupid features come from coping with that due to no content.

It seems stupid to have a development team working on MMO while none(or almost none) of them actually plays an MMO. I actually really enjoyed the PvP. To me, even though the game has improved a lot since launch, there's still one big issue that hasn't been fixed and what I think would be a huge gamechanger. open world activities. more things to do in open world in general. The biggest reasons as to why we enjoyed New world was because it was something new and MMORPG players had craved something new for a long time (and we still do). It was new in terms of the action combat, the graphics, the sound design system and its overall look. It was immersive, exciting and very fun the first few weeks, until I guess people realized how lazy, copy and paste the game was developed, as well as how many problems it had at its core.

On the hitscan, playing musket it's a massive difference, played on launch and got dragged back kicking recently, I couldn't hit anything because I always account for projectile travel not knowing it switched to hitscan, and having projectile travel just feels soo much better in new world's setting since the strongest aspect of the game is immersion Also solo chest runs were the most fun I used to have in endgame, if they kept those I might've been still occasionally playing And they absolutely fail at server merging, multiple servers with around 100 peak players for weeks while they say they constantly watch for servers needing merge and merge at the soonest thursday (at least I think it was thursday)

It's kind of adorable how Asmon insists the game still has a heartbeat because after shedding over 90% of the player base, the shedding finally stopped lol. I also don't get the bit about the devs deserving credit for not just abandoning the game, because... that's not their decision to make. They'll work on New World as long as the people above them want them to work on New World. The game's monster numbers at launch probably convinced AGS it was worth trying to see if they could rebound, but I bet if this summer content expansion doesn't see a large and sustained increase in players that's going to be the the end of trying to salvage the game.

As a Sr Software Engineer, I can tell you companies can't "buy their way" to quality talent. The industry is severely understaffed & most engineers are already highly paid and aren't even considering switching companies. Quality engineers do not look for jobs, they are primarily poached by recruiters, and if a good game developer is already working and invested in another project with another company, they are unlikely to jump ship to join AGS, regardless of more money waved in their face, as these game devs are very passionate about seeing their project to completion, already make plenty of money to be happy. It's not just the game industry either, this is a software development problem as a whole. This is why Intrepid Studios (Ashes of Creation) continues to promote their Development Updates as "hiring opportunities" to entice quality game devs to join them on their project. You have to sell the idea of your project to the engineers in order for them to join you. Most recruiter messages come with a generic line about "joining a growing team working on an unannounced upcoming project" which is unlikely to even yield a response.

I'm 1200ish hours into New World on mainly one character, pretty much just myself working on trade skills and another buddy fetching resources to help me max out all my trades. I just found it really relaxing to be able to relax doing crafting/gathering while still making enough progress to eventually get to 60 so that I can still run the odd expedition with friends here and there. I've got loads of quests left to do. I've been tolerating the grind for a while, occasionally taking breaks to hop on other releases in the meantime. New World has one hell of a foundation to build upon, and seems like they aren't ignoring feedback so far. I'd say for anyone who lost interest part way through leveling to 60, put this one to the side and let it grow. Headlines talking about how the game is dead or dying kind of dissuades potential players from giving it a go. My biggest gripes are the copy/paste of enemy character models and similarity of many settlements. I think some quests should have had longer chains that force you into the next zone to complete them, granted while I mainly leveled off crafting, im getting the feeling that eventually even if all you did was quest, you'd wind up doing random things everywhere. I'm also running into a lot of quests where either the mob isn't spawning, or the marker is wrong, even after multiple patches the same issue persists.... Hopefully over time as we get more regions, maybe even a complete overhaul, we'll end up with the MMO we all want... or think... or cant... become a reality. You can't please everyone.

New World made me feel like an Amazon Mass Production factory worker and a slave. The amounts you have to gather and produce to get any tangible progress was just not for me. But I loved the combat, graphics and general feel of the game. Glad I tried it, but they didn't take it in a direction I cared about whatsoever for endgame PvE and it didn't turn into the PvP game it could've been either, so I bailed. Happy there's no sub. One huge problem that killed it for me and a bunch of others on my server who stuck it out for months is that for the first 6-7 months AGS focused the endgame towards pvp, and the pve content was really just to increase your pvp gear. But when they added the 600+ dungeons, endgame pve was no longer able to directly affect pvp, and we ended up having to toss our long developed and tested builds in lieu of gear solely focused towards pve progression. It got to a point where skills and tailored gear no longer mattered and only the GS was important

How many people were duplicating shit like ultra rare resources to make high end craft gear was crazy and I still bewildered how the system was not hardened against such things which were known at least since the alpha.

The problem is that by the time I got in everyone on the server was levels ahead of me so every time I got on other than the main hub towns the other towns you go to on the quest line where completely empty other than a few people that fell behind in level or my friends that came and helped me level. So in the end if you didn’t level as fast as the super try hard group or join the server late you where absolutely screwed to a land of solitude. Im right with Asmon. The first week of launch I was in all chat telling everyone that "Being forced to walk back and forth to collect wood is going to kill this game, especially if Azoth is going to cost an arm and a leg if you're in the wrong faction. We need mounts, cheaper azoth or some kind of global running speed buff while out of combat." All the no lifers and hardcore survivalist andys shot me down, called me casual and echoed one another about the TRUE MMO experience. And would you look at them now, strapped to a hospital bed being constantly injected with 30CCs of high grade Copium. Then to rub salt in the wound, AGS not only reduced the fast travel cost on Azoth, they added a 10% speed boost when traveling on roads, like I said they should've, 3 days into the game. I still think mounts with a 30% speed boost would've been 100x better and helped retain a lot more players though. But the hardcore pvp andys whined and cried about how mounts would ruin pvp, even though every MMO with open world pvp and mounts found a way to make it work. Like being dismounted if you take any damage, or being slowed to a crawl upon taking player damage. But nope, no one could see past there being "NO BEASTS OF BURDEN IN THE LORE!".

Companies almost always go cheap mode with AI devs. Which, one of my favorite things from BFA WoW was the expeditions. The AI for the npc players was the best I've experienced for an mmo - how blizzard didn't realize they hit gold with that feature, I have no idea... every mob should have unique AI implemented - i.e. Cowardly enemies , etc... AI is huge for just making basic combat or grinding fun, compared to tedium.

Hard mode was against other players... I'm just saying that AI should be implemented into all npc and you keep making horrible made up arguments that hold no validity. It's about tuning the numbers for difficulty you want to achieve. You're saying it would be unfair, but the numbers could be tweaked to make it fair and fun. Again stfu... :) No other mmo has had that good of AI for mobs in an mmo and it would be game changing. Also I'm an AI guy, my senior project was creating a deep learning machine that could learn to complete photos that were cut in half. 32:30 that's so true! most game designers or ppl in charge of anything who fail tend to not be in the action themselves. if you want to build the best car you should drive yourself. if you want to design a game that's amazing you should play games yourself. if you want to impress the phone market with an amazing new phone then you should use a phone yourself and not still use an old-school telephone instead. that's a general problem. in most companies ppl in charge just studied their way into a certain field without having actual experience with the topic. that's a mess to begin with and what's most frustrating is that these ppl in charge tend to not listen to the ppl with real experience rather thinking they know everything themselves just like mike frazzini seemed to be in the developement of new world :/

I was playing like 50 hours of New World a week while working 60 hour weeks. I loved this game. The games gameplay loop is so simple and cozy but there is too many unignorable flaws. The devs not rolling back servers after the duping basically killed the desire for anyone who was playing casually. The fact that issues pointed out in the closed beta were never addressed. The fact that the game launched in an unfinished state. If patch 1.0 was the gypsum patch I honestly thing the game would have about 100k players. The game also just straight up lacked content to do. There was no down side to running the same 50 man War team so it lead to player burn out and resentment of players not as good or hardcore because they never got to partake. Then server lag, game breaking bugs and unbalanced pvp with Ice Gauntlet and Void Gauntlet. I could go on and on but I think if Amazon doesnt abandon this game and they keep developing content it should become successful in the future. All of these things are what drained me from New World. I really really hope they are able to do a major content patch, maybe a barber, bunch of pve grinds, maybe even 2 new weapons. I am excited to see how the arenas are though. Thanks for reading my tedtalk

I am a 41 year old DAD and Grandpa and I quit after 1,310 hours into it! I played it purely based off of how in depth the world was PvE wise. It died to me because there was NOT enough content coming out to keep me interested! They need to keep coming out with content when your aiming for PvE, hence new endgame raiding i.e New worlds failed attempts with mutations and there big mess up with allowing every joe blow to get get every legendary drop in the game hence taking the feeling of getting lucky and or grinding and earning it out of the game! PvP believe it or NOT people, is not the reason why New world is dead or dying, it is because the PvE in it story wise and content wise was not enough and cheesed! people I know that are still playing it from the gaming community I am a part of are playing it for PvP reasons only now. Most people who look to play MMORPGS are wanting the feeling of being apart of the world, distinctive from others and be able to earn badass weapons, armor, achievements etc.. Not to mention to be able to get that feeling of accomplishment when you finally down that boss or "mutation" on the hardest mode and you feel it as a group of friends who all strived for the same goal and achieved it!

For those people who don't know this series: Death of a Game series is often not really saying a game is actually death. It's mostly analyzing what has been great and why a large portion has left. I really liked New World. The theme, the sound, the combat all was a pretty and a breath of fresh air. We don't have really a MMO in this time period etc. But other games kinda overshadowed it, and the fact that PvP was a huge part of it but you never really could PvP as a solo player or with a few friends. Because the big pre-made guilds and streamers would always get the fun PvP events and as a small group/solo player you could only be overrun by the zerg. And the PvE was not really fulfilling.

All of the pieces of a puzzle need to fit together. Instead, all of the pieces, as well done as they were, ended up being from different puzzles

On the topic of the mid game experience. I played New World for a couple evenings with friends and it was really, really fun. However, after reading reddit and forums we realized there wasn't really going to be much for us going forward and it just wasn't worth the time commitment when there are things like FFXIV for us to play.

As a FFXIV andy, I was planning on playing New World myself whenever I get a new GPU (since prices are still jacked up and my current GPU died at the worst time), but it seems it didn't live up to expectations.

I was fine with the leveling system, it was grindy but was fun. I left at 60 due to lack of content. having to grind millions of ingot just to get a couple levels in crafting or signing up for that corruption even just to not be able to enter (setting up alarms or getting ready and drop everything your doing to just get a rejection in the end...) just started to get too annoying and found out that I wasn't really doing anything but grinding mats. in all, no end game content in the game for a majority of players and only available to selected few (elites).

My issue with the game was the material grind and my gf mentioned this and I agree - it's hard to quest and run around with your friend. It would be better if we could quest share.

New world was the first mmorpg video game I played. What I loved about it was gathering materials, crafting and then selling them to other players. I only wanted to go to dungeons and level up for that reason. So far I've played mobile mmorpgs and just recently got Elden Ring and Star Citizen. Still lost in SC world so not sure if they have that system yet. But not really enjoying Elder Ring as much as others, weirdly, playing New World was a lot more fan for having that the market.

30:55 this reminded me of my first job, so there is the NGO on my city that provides pretty much teenage labor education and jobs for teens about to get to adulthood in governmental institutions with office spaces, and on the job I got, by month 2 of a 2 year contract I realized the guy responsible for my sector was just a someone who didn't knew nothing, the only thing that he would do was expect documents to show up in his desk magically, and try to awe the teens on that sector about how "great" of a boss he was, although we were young we weren't THAT impressionable, and when I realized, I was treating the old lady, who worked on that sector since the 80's and knew EVERYTHING there was to know about our functions and our responsibilities like she was my REAL boss, and I feel like that since today, after years out of that place. (Besides she was just a nice lady, and sometimes even bring home made pies and other things for the sector people, they were delicious btw) What I think I am trying to get at is, if your leadership is lacking, there will be dissatisfaction, and your workers will either try and rely in other people, or even just straight up not do their work right.

I only made it to like level 43 in New World and then it got too repetitive. I think what really killed it for me was the multiple stashes and cost for transferring your gear. As soon as I got to the new town and had to redo all my stash system was the final nail in the coffin. And the gold cost for switching your spec.? I thought they would patch that out early on, but nope. Why would you have to pay gold to switch to a weapon that you've already trained? I think the Azoth costs were also pretty bad. Also, my server went from 500+ to less than 200 because everyone transferred out during Thanksgiving. I also would find the giant Turkey for the event, while leveling and let my guild know, and then after we would kill it, I received absolutely nothing for it because I was too low level, Lol I wrote lots of feedback in and out of the game but they never seemed to take notice of it. Anyways, I'm playing Lost Ark now and really enjoying it.

Man, I haven't seen a game crash and burn like NW since No Man's Sky. Hello was able to pull that one out of the depths of Hell but idk if Amazon has the dedication to save NW. Pity because it had so much potential. The siege battles were soooo sick before everybody started glitching and exploiting things.

I've tried to get into another mmo but I can't seem to enjoy them. I've found myself back playing EQ lately and it's still better then alot of the new ones that keep coming out. It's actually interesting that EQ isn't a dead game now... Povar sever is still stacked with alot of people and engagement from not only other players but GMs are constantly doing little events weekly.

I quit 2-3 months after i hit level 60. My problem was I ran out of content THAT I ENJOYED DOING. Running the same 3 dungeons over and over, zerging chest runs, or gathering resources for hours and hours... all bored me.
