I just watched all of John Candy's movies, even Hot to Trot, so I can still be convinced to watch something because of the actor. But I also just watched all of the predator/alien movies.

Any of Paul Walker movies back when he was alive because he was hot. 🤭🤭🤭🤭. I also kinda love Julia Roberts movie back in those days.

Those are great points! I think you hit the nail on the head. It's interesting Tom Holland has a HUGE and very aggressive following of fans on social media. But oddly enough, no one goes to see his movies when he's not Spider-Man. Even RDJ, who was a big deal back when he was in the MCU, couldn't get anyone to go see him in non-MCU movies. That's a real shame, since RDJ is such a good actor. I think some of the older actors can still bring in a crowd, though the box office returns are far less than a popular franchise. Tom Cruise, Tom Hanks, Denzel Washington, Brad Pitt.. I've made it point to go see smaller movies in theaters that I think I'll like. I always go to the theater to see Clint Eastwood's latest movies. I think it's also important the type of movie being made. If it's too niche or avant-garde, or is very political, that's going to scare away a lot of people. You can almost always tell by the movie trailer if it's going to be "that" kind of movie. Top Gun Maverick, while it is an IP (a very old one), it reached a billion dollars and played all summer! I attribute that to Tom Cruise still being a movie star, the Top Gun IP/nostalgia, and also it's just a plain fun movie. Of all the older movie stars left, I think Tom Cruise still has it. He's making franchise movies, sure (Mission Impossible for example), but they're still uniquely a "Tom Cruise" movie. Oh and hey, congratulations on getting married!!

Thank you!! I always look forward to your comments because they are very well thought out. Top Gun Maverick was amazing. I loved it. I think 50% of it's success has to do with it starring Tom Cruise, and the other 50% is because of Tom Cruise 😂 The way Mr. Cruise approaches making movies is next level compared to other people out there. The action, the stunts... amazing! Another actor that I would go out of my way to watch their movies is Leonardo DiCaprio. I actually find it a bit sad that we no longer have as many huge stars pulling in the audiences to theatres. As we continue to make more videos, we're really starting to realize that the film industry has really changed over the years. I wonder if people felt the same ways in other decades 🤔

@@FilmStack Oh for sure. I love the crazy stunt work Cruise does. Another big factor in Top Gun's success was it's was a multi-generational movie. I went opening weekend and there were TONS of older veterans with their sons, grandkids and wives in the theater. I normally don't see them at the movies. While I don't see Top Gun as a "military" or "war" movie, there were a lot of military families that went to see this movie. It's also somewhat of an old-school style movie. I think a lot of middle America went to see this movie. I've said it for years, never underestimate middle America! If you make a movie that appeals to them, they'll show up. I think TGM is proof of that.

Trust me, Top Gun didn’t become a box office juggernaut due to IP alone. The crowd it drew in the ‘80s was part of the one that came now, but it wasn’t the majority. Top Gun garnered a ton of positive word of mouth, and it was just an incredible movie, as well as a top notch feat in filmmaking. Even me, who actually thought the original was a bit overhyped, loved this one. On your point about Holland, while he’s a good actor, he’s been shoved in so many things that he’s the least “Spider-Man” of the Spider-Men I’ve watched. Like, Maguire, Garfield, they’ve mostly stuck to low level indies that push them as actors but keep them off the spotlight, so I can still see Peter Parker in them. With Holland, I just see Holland in a Spider-Man costume.

There were also a lot of downsides to this system. Often times a studio would insist an actor be cast in a role not because they were right for the part, but because they were a big star and would help put asses in seats. This could lead to some pretty awkward acting. (Keanu Reeves in Dracula or Alicia Silverstone in Batman and Robin spring to mind) Also, many times you could feel that a movie with a big star was rushed or wasn't worked on hard enough because they felt "Well, we got Julia Roberts, people are gonna see it either way, so we don't have to make it great!"

I think that kind of movies are also responsible for the death of the movie stars. They didn't always bother to make a great movie cos they had a movie star in it.

I hate being SO connected and everyone's life being so out there and available for anyone to access

Yeah, remember when actors had that air of mystery to them and all you knew them as were their characters? Good times.

Timothee and Anya still have a long way to go before they could actually be considered movie stars. If multiple people from where I live line up for a movie and say they are watching because one of the two is there (even if it's just a cameo), I'd say they are. The last time I heard that remark was about JLaw but that went sour after Passengers and Mother.

In todays era Milly Bobby Brown is not a movie star It's Eleven. The other side is Anya Taylor-Joy being a movie star for portraying a character from Queens Gambit and other roles.

Anya Taylor Joy seems like a more interesting and versatile actress, to be honest. I don’t know how to explain it well, but I feel like Milly Bobby Brown will get your script and give you exactly what you’re looking for, while ATJ will take that script and run with it, giving you things you didn’t really think you’d want until she gave them to you, and it makes the characters she plays more memorable and they can stand on their own. While she has a very distinct look, her characters seem different enough for you to not just see them as ATJ’s new character. It’s rare, it’s kinda like Cillian Murphy and Tom Hardy, you know you know those actors, but they become their characters to the point where you don’t just see actors. Not what I’m getting with MBB.

Apparently the Movie Star wasn't the only thing that died... the need to create great cinematic art died as well.

Nice Guys is soooo fcking underrated!....Like its so underrated that its a crime, I can't believe it, Nice Guys would've made an awesome trilogy..but noooooo, people had to go watch generic superhero movies....Like WTF!!!

Ys, Probably what studios prefer these days.. as actors can be treated as regular employees and they are purposely kept insignificant so the studios don't have to deal with actor scandals, ego's or temper tantrums which they had alot during the golden years like 60's and even till recent (cough Amber vs Jhonny).. further if the case of Kevin Spacey and his likes drives a message home, it would the fact that certain enormous actors and their personal reputation used to haunt / damage their movies box office performace and so much had happend back then with all the undesirable 'Star scandals.' Today we have Alec Baldwin and Will smith causing a real predicament leaving future projects in a questionable position.

I think another factor is the advancement of wigs, make-up, and CGI. Sometimes, actors are completely unrecognizable in their roles.

After what Ezra Miller and Amber Heard did, no wonder there are less stars now

It makes you wonder about the stuff some of the old Hollywood stars were getting away with because of less accountability and no social media, I think we've just realized that these actors are real humans and not Hollywood immortals, they can do bad things and say stupid stuff so our default shouldn't be always idolizing or glorifying them

Good thing that Indian cinema is still immune to studio system. We have literal star worship over here

While that's true, I can say, at least for bollywood, the star system is over once the khans and the stars from their generation start receding from the industry. I can't say for the south though.

As someone who watch K drama movies stars are still relevant in those Korean movies.

Ladies and gentlemen we have finally reached a cultural cal de sac.

Telling that I’ve never even heard of the “biggest young movie stars” of this generation.

Yeah I think people are going to movies now for the spectacle more than anything else. If you were to look at a list of top 10 movies today in compared it with 20 years ago, you would see a lot more dramas in the top 10 list.
