Death of a Colonel | Two Days in October

Фильм және анимация

On October 17, Lieutenant Colonel Terry Allen, commander of the Black Lions special unit, led his men into the jungle of Vietnam, looking for engagement with the Viet Cong. An ambush nearly wiped out the battalion, prompting some in power to question whether the war might be unwinnable.

The Black Lions were not a "special unit." They were the 2/28th Infantry... a regular grunt infantry outfit.

@Coll Maxwell General "Terrible" Terry Allen was the father of the LT Col who mastermined this debacle. The father was a remarkable fighting general who was relieved of his command of the Big Red One, the American 1st Division by Omar Bradly himself. Later Bradley said that "none excelled the unpredictable Terry Allen in the leadership of troops." He also flunked out of West Point. But he was a wonderful infantry tactician and leader of men. Fine horseman, too. Once made an epic ride on a bet in the American Southwest where he'd served on the Mexican border. After his dismissal from the First Div. he was put back in the war with a division that he himself had trained and led, the 104th. He chewed through Germans and was wary of losing his own men. I was very sorry that his son preceded him in death and in such an ingnominious fashion: failure of small unit tactics. Whether the general alluded to is the father or he who commanded Allen Jr. at the time of his slaughter is important. Allen Sr. was not the sort of man who would expect suicidal efforts of his in trying to win distinction to match the old man's. At leasr I don't think. So, I was hoping Najera was refering to the local general in comand

@Coll Maxwell From what I recall from the full version, Lt. Col. Allen ordered a frontal attack on a fortified position. If Col. Hal Moore had been in charge this would probably turned out a lot different. Just saying
