DEATH IN VENICE - Thomas Mann BOOK REVIEW and CHANNEL UPDATE

Death in Venice is a novella (short novel) by the German writer Thomas Mann. It is also one of my favorite books and in this video I explain why.
Everyone who loves literature must read at least something by Thomas Mann. And why not Death in Venice? Death in Venice is a complex, beautiful, and painful story about decadence, aging, and beauty.

Just want to say how much joy and appreciation I have when I watch your reviews - you have inspired me to read so many books, from madame bovary to Pedro paramo, and from Faulkner to Wharton. In fact, I read death of Venice when I saw your haul on books by Thomas Mann! Completely understand your decision to cut back on this channel but just wanted to say a massive thank you

Hi Juan, I liked your review of Death in Vernice very much. It is, next to The Blood of the Walsungs, one of my favorite novellas by TM. I am planning to reread it in November. I fully understand your decision to focus your videos and not to run a broad variety of projects. Each creator has to be free to design the profile of their channel and not to act as the slave of the algorithm. As always, I am looking forward to your next video. Take care, Norman

Thank you so much for this beautiful review. I stumbled upon that book when I was fourteen and it has been one of my favourites since then. It introduced me to Thomas Mann that I’ve always liked more than Hesse although I must admit I’ve also devoured Hesse’s novels as a teen. It’s a shame Death in Venice is mostly perceived through the lens of sexual abuse nowadays when in reality it’s so much more. As you rightly said, everything happens in Aschenbachs mind, and there is no real contact between the adult and the teenager. Classic culture permeates each idea and thought going on in the protagonist’s mind. I simply adore Mann’s meticulous descriptions, and very much enjoy his complex way of writing. Being from a German speaking country, I count myself very lucky to be able to read Mann in the original version, and I can affirm that reading Death in Venice is pure music and joy.

I’d add Aschenbach’s admiration for ancient philosophy and how in his thinking about Tadzio Mann is referencing to relationships and views of philosophers like Socrates.

It makes so much sense to prioritize so you don't burn out. Since becoming aware of Booktube, I've sometimes thought in passing that it would be fun to have a channel, and then I think about how much time all that editing must take! I would have no time left to read, lol! I also just read Death in Venice this year (I read The Magic Mountain a couple years ago, and Buddenbrooks a few decades ago...), just before reading the new fictionalized biography of Mann by Colm Tóibín, The Magician, which I really enjoyed. If you haven't read it, I'd recommend.

Thanks, Erin! The editing is not even the worst part! Of course, there are different approaches one can take to creating content. The best way to know if you enjoy it is by trying it out. I wasn't sure about Tóibín's novel about Mann because it had mixed reviews, but I might check it out.

Thank you for all your videos ..I'm from India, your videos have really helped me in completing my Masters in English literature with flying colours. It has also helped me in improving my pronunciation and vocabulary. You deserve to take a break after all the efforts you put in to read & analyse the book and shoot & edit the video. I have noticed that you look very tired compared to your previous videos a year back. Probably, it's the burn out you mentioned, but i hope you recover your health and continue your KZread channel successfully . Prayers and wishes😊🌟

Woohoo! You're staying! That makes me glad. Still, you have to avoid burnout because youtuber burnout is a very real thing. You don't want to spend more time than necessary in front of a computer screen (it's bad for you). As long as I get a video from you every week or two, I am happy. I do hope you can get back to the bible as literature even if only sporadically because that series is a great idea. Thank you for everything you have done already. You do a great job of recommending literature.
