The thing that's so crazy about MC Ride's lyrics is that most of the time you can either barely hear them, or they're overpowered by the instrumental, but the dude has some of the most complex and cryptic and in-depth lyrics of the decade

"Strangely listenable." perfectly sums up probably almost everyone's first reaction to The Money Store. It's so weird and out there and going in ten different directions at once, and yet in pretty much every track there's something immediately catchy that you can focus on. Those catchy bits carry you through your first couple of listen-throughs, and after that the bits that you couldn't handle before start making sense. And because the production is so dense, there's lots and lots for you to discover, making The Money Store a very rewarding album to listen to over and over again. Btw Jon the beat in Lost Boys is so good, please give it a listen with a good audio setup with volume turned a bit too loud and you'll get it for sure. The beat drop in the beginning of Lost Boys is one of the definite highlights from the album, I always rewind it a couple of times.

@Colby S Perhaps, but his last two albums have been wildly successful. Probably more so than any of Clipping's projects. Don't get me wrong, I love all three of them, but I think Peggy's meteoric rise, and also staying power with two successful albums under his belt is enough to merit a place. Clipping and Death Grips would have both deserved their places after their first two albums as well.

Death Grips season??? Pls But to add something substantial, DG is one of the best and most interesting groups of the decade. Def not for everyone and some of their releases are more obtuse than others, but they always have a sens of purpose and musicality even when they are breaking genres and your brain. Money Store is like being pushed into your computer and through the internet while hackers and viruses chase you and you are sporadically electrocuted. Very causal listen

They do use samples actually, they're pretty outlandish with them as well. System Blower takes a tennis match of all things and distorts the shit out of it. The "IT'S DEATH" part at the intro for The Cage iirc is actually from, "Death Grips (Next Grips), one of their earlier songs from their self titled EP. And that's only two of several sample examples from this album alone. You've probably been tipped off to this guy before but if you haven't, check out Bandstand's videos on this group in your free time. They've got videos on several artists and it's kinda crazy where and how some people get their samples and how it translates to their songs.

Paranoid Android is arguably one of the greatest songs if all time. I fucking cried the first time I heard it holy shit. On GP, Devil in a New Dress, and U also could take that title.

As you speculated their liveshow is absolutely insane. I saw Jpegmafia, Denzel Curry, Brockhampton, Sheck Wes, Skepta, Joey Purp, Sophie and Death Grips at Roskilde festival in Denmark this summer. While they were all great shows (especially Brockhampton) none of the crowds came close to the level of insane energy as the Death grips concert did. Would recommend to anyone wanting to experience one of the most intense concerts of their life. (as long as you're ready to get completely beaten up in the crowd) #unsubscribed

This album is fucking mental, it caught me a week after my first listen, it's so intricately constructed and experimental in style I can listen to tracks for the 100th time and find something new, the layering in Hacker is truly incredible. I recommend checking out Exmilitary, No Love Deep Web, The Powers that B, Bottomless Pit - The Money Store is my favourite.

If you're ever planning to listen to the rest of the albums (off cam or on) you should listen to them in chronological order. That's the best experience after being introduced by either TMS or Exmilitary.

The lyricism of Death Grips is unparalleled in how cryptic and unsavoury it is. Its a very rewarding experience to read into and understand this amazingly dark world MC Ride and gang created. If you enjoyed The Money Store, Bottomless Pit is very similar, however their whole discography is near flawless and if this becomes a Death Grips season my 2019 will be made

i couldn't contain my joy when i saw you'd uploaded this. sick reaction, Jon - you're the best. your analogies throughout were both hilarious and insightful. if you react to more of their discography (i recommend The Powers That B), i think reading along with the lyrics would actually be a good shout (if it's humanly possible on a first listen). Ride is a brilliant lyricist when you get a chance to take it all in.

Saw them live in a Nottingham club earlier this year, it was I N S A N E . The atmosphere, the volume, the group themselves... It was an hour of straight madness, MC Ride performs shirtless and without even a break for water, it's just constant noise and it's amazing. I had a good few bruises afterwards tho. See them live if you can!

9:24 YO THE DFA SHOUTOUT! Fuck yeah man Death Grips is one of the best bands of the 2010s. As strange and chaotic as their music sounds, once you break it down you can really see their influences. They choose both really familiar and obscure samples, and flip / arrange them so brilliantly you don't even realize you're hearing it even though they're so blatant. The last track Hacker samples M83's Midnight City as well as the Blue Devils Ditty drum line.Really hope you peep into the rest of their discography. It's worth it. Personally I think Ex-Military is their weakest, but even that album is a near classic.
