when it comes to outcrossing. I learned this from a very experienced dog trainer (military , police ,. etc) and breeder. I had so many Qs for him, once I saw his resume lol He said that it's kind of a necessity for German Shepard (he bred) to be outcrossed with Belgian Malinois every X generations. For physical and mental health. He said how keeping them 100% pure breed, makes them dumber to work with. From my personal anecdotal experience, purer the dog more hereditary health problems. some unknown mixed breeds definitely appeared smarter and a lot healthier.

It was working class men who created the bulldogs over here, they werent a breed, just a dog bred for a job that happened to display certain physical traits. Its always the middle and upper class that then try and turn it into a pure breed and ruin it. I like to think men like myself who may of kept bulldogs back in the day now keep lurchers, which i believe can also teach you a lot about how they went about breeding bulldogs back in the day. The line of dog i keep has been tried and tested for nearly 40 years on hares, and thats what they excel at, they come in all shapes and sizes but most can do the task good, some can do it very well.

Back in the day when these dogs were making their reputation. People using these dogs were breeding a good dog to a good dog.Today that would be called selective breeding. These dogs carry a lot of behavioral traits. The dogs that behaved the way people needed them to,were bred to another dog that behaved the same. I don't think people cared much what the color was. Unless someone thought they needed a white dog so they were easier to see at night. What one man needed might be a little different from another man's needs. But I think all of us appreciate these dogs heart , determination , strength, and devotion . Through selective breeding we have a lot of bulldog breeds around. Every man's needs are different. It isn't surprising that some of us are still tinkering around trying to improve behaviors to best suit our needs. Nothing ventured nothing gained.

Totally agree...one breeds to generate dogs that can do specific job(s) that need getting done. Based on two decades of owning working line old english bulldogs and alapaha's and in discussion with some very legit old timers - - - the dogs (and their sizes) were highly dependent on the "job needed to be done". So smaller dogs - hog hunting, general property protection and protection of owner and horses (say on a long distant wagon trip to obtain supplies or sell goods) etc. The smaller dog had to have much greater endurance etc. In addition, smaller dogs were typically found in more humid areas of Georgia. The dogs were bigger when the farm, ranch or plantation was the central base - so the dogs were doing the job primarily of generalist LSG and home protector = acting as a "perimeter dog". They were trained to do perimeter runs of the actual structure and/property - on command. Big dogs on porches that wrapped around the home...watching who comes down the road and keeping a eye and/or ear on the home occupants and animals etc. The bigger dog was very intimidating in size (a deterrent right there), with a deep bellows bark that was a serious warning to somone approaching the property...keep off my property. Obviously there is no black and white here and one gets blends of the above. But based on my discussions over the years this was the "general theme" specifically around the topic of size. My female alapaha Bella is around 87 pounds (she is a big girl) - an awesome natural home protector, does perimeter runs and runs 5 miles with me 3X per week - with ease. She has amazing endurance for a bigger dog. The problem with many black and white thinkers in the working dog world is that they feel "their way is the only way". They keep their blinders on which prevents them from listening to different viewpoints and common sense. You can't change these kind of folks, but you can forge your own path with proper sound foundational knowledge and built experience over the years - with the mentorship of others that have gone before. Much learning comes from old timers that are willing to share what they know and WANT TO PASS THEIR KNOWLEDGE ON to future generations. So the working bulldog whatever breed never dies out.

Bulldogs from 1700s weighed 40 - 50lb by the rime baiting ended in 1835 they weighed 80-100lb this was not done by keeping dogs 'pure' the only ones who wanted purity were the victorians and look how many breeds thhat has ruined.

Yep Pure breeds tend to lead ro a lot of problems. Same could be said for human inbreeding. Less genetics mutations we share , lower the risks. Imagine the consequences, when it it all gets compounded within relatively small circles.

I think the majority of the people reacting negative towards you are pet owners who are concerned about keeping the breeds "pure". You are in search of the perfect farmdog and what I see of your AB and Staffy they are a perfect match. What were the parents of your Staffy like? Normally "irish" or working Staffy's like yours have a lot of prey drive. Your Staffy seems very chill with all the animals on your farm.

@bulldogjoe1804 - Our SBT’s parents were owned by different people. Mom ( Dam) was just a family dog/show dog but Sire was titled in multiple competitions such as barn hunts and farm titles. The owner of the sire grew up on a farm and that’s why she chose the Staffy as her breed. She needed a dog that was small but sturdy but could be around farm animals and people. He kind of fell into my lap because most Staffies are full of drive from what I gather. Funny thing is , someone told me this morning crossing was better for pets but not working dogs or dogs with a purpose, 🤦🏻‍♂️ dang near lost my mind when I heard that. People cross breeds together ALL the time for purposes and usually achieve them a lot faster.

Who cares what people say or think!! Know a guy that has a bandog and he put that dog over pitbulls and sale the pup's as pure pitbulls, people wanted a large pitbull and made them and he get $1500--$2000 dollars for a pup and people think they are as pure as white snow. I myself love a Game Bred Pitbull you have to accept all dog's have something in their background so my friend keep doing what you like ill take a good hard working dog any day over a AKC show dog that can't work anymore because of breeding for show and not work..GOD BLESS You all.

Purity in working breeds is function/performance first and foremost If you had a Pointer that won’t point game, is he pure Pointer ??? If you had a Retriever that can’t swim or has a natural drive to retrieve, is that do pure? If you have a catch dog that won’t catch or that heatstrokes on a hunt , is that pure? Common sense tells you those dogs are Pure nonsense

I agree and I have used some of those same analogies before. Seems as if today, in America at least, people need paperwork to solidify their dogs and look down upon intentional crosses the same way as a mixed breed mutt from an accidental breeding. Breed names were giving for job(s) performed and/or location. I don’t think it was meant to be giving a breed name and just keep breeding a family of dogs that were related to keep that breed name. The dogs should be able to act and live up to their name.

  • @kevins1291

First off, your dogs. In my mnd, a breed has a range of characteristics. Multiple breeds = larger range of characteristics that may or may not be present. If you are buying for a specific set of characteristics, it is less likely with mixed breeds. Fine for pets but risky IMHO if buying a dog for a purpose.

You have to look at the dog not the breed. It’s an individual basis not a decision determined by breed. If two dogs have similar traits then those traits “should “ be passed on. If two dogs within the same breed have different personality and temperament traits which one will give you more consistent results? The dogs that share the same breed name but are nothing alike temperament wise or the two dogs, regardless of breed that have the similar temperament? Crosses are done all the time for dogs with a purpose, all these “breeds” were created by crosses. It’s deeper than just breeds.

Also, you make a decent point but dogs get more influence from parents than grandparents or great grandparents. Their genes are still present but again, I know the American Bulldog side because we owned the parents, grandparents, etc. On the Staffy side, we know the dog potentially used for breeding ( Grimm) and know that his sire was an accomplished farm dog as far as titles go. Breeder comes from farm background as well so this isn’t an American Bulldog vs Staffordshire Bull Terrier deal. This is dog vs dog deal. And to end this comment other breeds were used within the American Bulldog gene pool up until 2017 which was allowed by NKC. On top of that you have to understand people are hanging papers.

Also your Bulldog is not “pure” by definition, so where do we draw the line? Your dog already has other breeds in it. The entire gene pool of American Bulldog is already “mixed” as you say. Might have pedigree but doesn’t mean it’s pure. Just can’t see how some folks can’t get past that when they have the information in front of them.

@@prideofthesouthlandkennels My dog is attested to be an American Bulldog by paper and reputation, and he is as we expected. Actually more than we expected. I know that there are no genetically pure domestic dog breeds. But breed characteristics are true. Faults included. All I'm saying is when you mix two breeds you have the full range of potential breed characteristic. You can get the best of both, worst of both or anywhere in between. It will take generations to get consistency. In other words a new breed. Not sure if that is where your going or if you are just looking for a few dogs that meet your minds eye vision of the perfect farm dog. The first option Seems like a long path, but it's your dogs and you know your mind. Just giving a perspective. I will admit a bias though, I'm not a fan of pit and staffy mixes in general. Nothing against the breeds themselves but mixes are every where. Here in AR people don't ask what kind of dog is that, when they see our dog, they ask what kind of pitbull is that. What they mean is what breed was mixed with a pit. You can assume any mixed breed here has pit or staffy in the mix and they are all over the map.

@@kevins1291 - I respect your opinion, your usually not one to just throw something out there without thought. However, to me and in my experience, not searching outside of the breed name American Bulldog is the long road to creating the farm dog that I want. You’d just have to be out here and see it. When you have a dog that has the temperament and behavior you want that’s the dog you breed. You don’t keep with a certain breed name if it ain’t getting you results. I bought 7 American Bulldogs, only 1 behaved the way I expected, Neyland. The other 6 were dang near crazy but some were used because Neyland’s traits had to be passed down. We kept 3 dogs out of breedings that seemed to work, Tellico and Iris and they produced Laurel. Tellico was way too human aggressive, he couldn’t be used the way I wanted to use him because he was a liability and would hop fences. Keeping a dog in a kennel is not a farm dog. So when we purchase a Staffordshire Bull Terrier that miraculously possesses all the behavior qualities we were looking for in American Bulldogs why wouldn’t use him. The media and law enforcement agencies across the United States are the ones that have created the umbrella term Pit Bull for several different breeds BUT I’d be willing to bet money their ain’t that many true Staffordshire Bull Terrier mixes out there. I see a lot of people claiming Staffordshire mix this and that but the SBT is fairly hard to get your hands on in my experience. They use that term in place of Pit Bull so that people don’t get scared off. The SBT is not the same as APBT so don’t lump them together like everyone else.
